Germany dMAT: Which MS Applicants Need It?

Germany’s new dMAT requirement does not cover every Indian master’s applicant. For Summer 2027 onward, check your previous degree field and APS timeline. Registration or complete-document shipment before June 29, 2026 can exempt that APS procedure; completed APS procedures are also exempt.

Start with the previous degree, not the German course name

APS India’s detailed rule covers selected previous-degree fields: engineering; commerce, accounting, finance or economics; and business or management. Its affected-fields list helps resolve degree labels. For an interdisciplinary qualification, check the list and seek clarification rather than inferring scope from the German master’s title.

The list specifically distinguishes Computer Science and Engineering from standalone Computer Science, BCA or Data Science, which are not automatically covered. Even a B.Tech title alone does not include every technology field: the official branch and APS classification matter.

This is a new document-planning question alongside the German application process. It does not automatically replace a program’s GRE or GATE requirement.

Apply the transition rule in this order

1. Identify the applicant route. Check the APS exclusions, including PhD and officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership routes.
2. Identify the prior field and intended intake. The introductory requirement concerns affected qualifications and Summer 2027 or later.
3. Check your existing APS procedure. Completed APS certification is exempt for that completed procedure.
4. Check both dates. Registration before June 29, 2026 or shipment of complete APS documents before that date gives the transitional exemption. If both occurred on or after June 29, the exemption does not follow from timing.
5. Check remaining details with APS. A new APS application is assessed under the rules applicable then. Do not treat an exemption for one procedure as a permanent personal exemption.

For students still completing their first degree, the official FAQ also distinguishes whether five semesters of a three-year degree or seven semesters of a four-year degree have been completed. Resolve your precise status before booking.

Our recommendation: keep the registration confirmation and shipment evidence beside your academic records. “I started planning before June” is not the same evidence as either specified event.

Worked example: the June 29 boundary

Illustrative case created by GradPilot: Two engineering graduates target Summer 2027. Applicant A registered with APS on June 28 and shipped documents in July. Applicant B registered and shipped complete documents on June 30. Neither has a completed APS procedure or another exemption.

A has the published registration-date exemption for that procedure. B does not have that timing exemption. The different result comes from the documented dates, not from their desired university or how early they began test preparation.

Plan the test and application documents together

The test provider’s India page describes the core and General Academic Module. Its first published sitting is September 26, 2026, with registration closing September 15 and certificates scheduled for October 12. After those dates, use the provider’s current calendar for later sittings.

Where dMAT is required, APS allows that certificate to follow the other application documents, but cannot issue the APS certificate until the required result has been submitted and checked. Do not infer permission to send other updated academic documents later.
