Germany: Any Job After a Master’s Degree?
Yes, an eligible German graduate can work in any occupation during the post-graduation job-search permission. But that job does not automatically qualify them for a subsequent work residence permit. Plan both stages before choosing a master's.
Separate the search period from the next permit
Germany's official study-visa guidance allows successful graduates to apply for a job-search residence permit lasting up to 18 months. During that permission, they can work in any occupation while seeking qualified employment. A suitable job can support an application for skilled-worker residence or an EU Blue Card, subject to that route's requirements.
The practical distinction is between earning money while searching and having a position that supports your next residence title. Neither a German degree nor a full-time employment contract answers both questions by itself.
The official graduate guidance also says to apply for the appropriate residence title before your study permit expires. Graduation does not automatically issue the new document. Put the permission application on your calendar alongside the thesis deadline and job applications.
For an Indian applicant comparing destinations, the useful question is therefore: “What kind of employment must I reach before this search permission ends?” Comparing countries only by their advertised post-study months leaves that question unanswered.
Apply a two-column test to each job
Use this original decision procedure when considering an offer:

A role can pass the first check while the second remains open. Label it that way in your budget. Do not turn “I can legally take this job during the search” into “I have secured a permanent route.” The German graduate settlement clock is a further, separate assessment.
Illustrative example, created for this guide: An engineering master's graduate accepts a shop job while applying for engineering positions. The shop wages help meet current expenses. The graduate should still maintain a separate list of roles being evaluated for a qualifying work permit. Merely making the shop contract permanent does not establish that it meets the later permit's requirements.
This distinction also improves course selection. Ask whether the master's teaches the skills needed for your intended roles, which projects could demonstrate those skills, and what employer evidence you can investigate. An additional month of search permission cannot substitute for a coherent training-to-job plan.
