A German degree does not start an automatic settlement countdown. Separate qualifying residence, pension contributions and German-language requirements.
German Master’s: When Can Settlement Start?
A German master's does not guarantee settlement two years later. The graduate route requires qualifying skilled-worker residence, pension contributions, German-language ability and other conditions. Count the relevant permits and contributions, not simply the years since you arrived.
Identify which settlement rule you mean
The current Residence Act, section 18c, sets a general skilled-worker route and a shorter provision for people who successfully completed German study or vocational training. The latter reduces the qualifying residence period to two years and the contribution period to 24 months.
Germany's official settlement guidance explains the associated conditions, including B1 German. It also describes a separate EU Blue Card route. These are different tests:

Neither row is the complete application test. Permitted employment, livelihood, legal and social knowledge, and accommodation also matter. The graduate provision covers specified titles, including sections 18a, 18b, 18d and 18g; it does not say that every form of lawful residence qualifies.
For an English-taught master's applicant, B1 is a concrete planning issue. The teaching language of your course does not remove the language condition of a settlement route. Build language preparation into the degree plan instead of discovering it after graduation.
Make a timeline with separate rows
Use this original procedure before estimating your earliest possible application:
- Record the degree: Where was it awarded, and has it actually been completed?
- Record each residence title: Copy its legal section and validity dates. Do not write only “student” or “working.”
- Record contributions: Obtain the relevant pension record rather than assuming every month in Germany produced a qualifying contribution.
- Choose the route: Match the evidence to the graduate or Blue Card provision and list the other conditions still outstanding.
- Check the proposed calculation: Take those records to the responsible foreigners authority before making commitments based on an estimated date.
Illustrative example, created for this guide: An applicant studies for two years, then spends six months on graduate job-search permission before obtaining qualifying skilled-worker residence. Adding those six search months to the master's duration does not create six months on the required skilled-worker title. The later title and the contribution record need their own calculation.
