Does April 15 Apply to Your Grad Offer?

April 15 is not the deadline for every graduate offer. Check whether the program participates, whether entry is in the fall and whether the offer includes covered financial support. An admission-only offer can have an earlier acceptance deadline.

Read the revised agreement's scope

The Council of Graduate Schools' 2026 FAQ identifies covered support as full tuition support, a graduate fellowship, traineeship or assistantship. The agreement concerns academic-year offers beginning in the fall. Some programs within a participating university may fall outside the graduate school's oversight and may not follow the resolution. The FAQ permits an earlier admission deadline where covered support is neither stated nor implied. Its example of implied support includes a promise of consideration for a teaching assistant position. Do not classify a letter solely by whether it contains a stipend amount.

UW–Madison confirms that its Graduate School reviewed and re-signed the updated 2026 resolution. Its guidance describes April 15 as the consideration window for covered support offers. UW–Madison funding deadline guidance.

The revised FAQ also allows intermediate check-ins approved by the graduate dean or equivalent authority. These ask whether you accept, decline or need more time. A request for more time must be honored through April 15, but missing the check-in can cost the financial offer. Answer that earlier request even if you remain undecided.

Check three facts before challenging a date

Start with the full offer letter and any linked terms, including the funding communication. Record:

1. The exact program. Look for its statement about the resolution; if missing or unclear, ask its admissions office about participation.
2. The entry period. Record the term the funded appointment or academic-year offer begins, rather than the date the offer arrived.
3. The support wording. Identify the named benefit and any promise tied to accepting admission. Preserve ambiguous language for clarification instead of silently treating it as no support.

Keep the admission response date, funding response date and any deposit instruction in separate fields. A discrepancy is a reason to ask a precise question with the offer attached. It is not a reason to leave an approaching deadline unanswered.

If a professor reports good news, distinguish a verbal PhD offer versus official admission before treating a departmental recommendation as the final institutional decision.

An illustrative February deadline

Illustrative case: An applicant receives a fall master's admission offer requiring a February response. Assume it contains no covered support or implied promise of support. The applicant cannot infer an April 15 extension merely because it is graduate admission.

The same person also receives a fall PhD assistantship offer from a participating program with a March check-in. If undecided, they should respond on time requesting consideration through April 15. If the letter instead demands a binding earlier decision, ask the program to clarify that requirement in writing.

Now add a statement about possible TA consideration to the master's letter. The applicant should revisit the classification rather than continue treating the offer as obviously admission-only. The wording matters even before any specific award is issued.

These comparisons do not establish deposit refunds or a universal legal right. They identify which official process and office should clarify the offer you actually hold.
