PhD Funding: Nine Months or a Full Year?

A nine-month PhD stipend does not automatically fund twelve months. Compare offers using the total support actually promised for the same year, then separate tuition, fees and payment timing. Count possible summer work only when its amount and conditions are confirmed.

Start with the funding calendar

Cornell distinguishes academic-year support from additional summer stipends. Its rate page lists nine-month and summer amounts separately and explains that summer appointment length depends on the funding source. Princeton's calendar distinguishes twelve-month support from ten-month awards with a separate summer period. The lesson is to inspect dates and funding components, rather than assuming every university uses the same meaning of “annual.” Princeton funding calendar.

Compare the same twelve-month window, recording any unsupported interval before a later start.

If you change the entry term, verify whether graduate funding survives an admission deferral and obtain the new commitment instead of carrying the old amount into another calendar.

A worked comparison

Illustrative offers; these are invented amounts, not university packages. Assume both offers begin on the same date and quote gross living stipends separately from tuition support.

Offer A has the higher monthly rate while funded. Offer B promises $4,000 more over the year. Multiplying A's $4,000 rate by twelve invents $12,000 of support that the offer has not supplied.

For a US assistantship, compare fees left after a graduate tuition waiver and the appointment conditions before treating a tuition waiver as a zero bill.

That comparison still does not tell you which package covers your costs. It is a gross-stipend baseline, before any deductions or expenses. Add uncovered university charges and your own budget separately. Do not subtract tuition from the stipend if the offer already provides separate tuition coverage; equally, do not assume a phrase such as “support package” means every charge is paid.

An additional award needs a coordination check: investigate how external fellowships interact with a PhD stipend before adding two headline amounts.

Resolve these terms in writing

If a professor reports good news, distinguish a verbal PhD offer versus official admission before treating a departmental recommendation as the final institutional decision.

For each offer, make a row for the academic year, summer and each later funded year. Record the payer, amount, dates and renewal conditions. Then ask the program to resolve the blank cells:

• Is summer support guaranteed, competitive, dependent on a PI, or simply common in past years?
• Are tuition, mandatory fees and health coverage included, and for which months?
• What teaching or research appointment is required? What happens if that appointment is unavailable?
• Does the commitment continue through the expected degree period, and what academic-progress conditions apply?
• When does the first payment arrive, and how frequently are later payments made?

The response deadline needs its own check; use whether April 15 covers a graduate funding offer to distinguish covered financial support from an unfunded admission deadline.

Timing matters even when totals match. Cornell explains that fellowship support may arrive through bursar refunds near the semester's start, while assistantship wages follow semimonthly payroll.
