Graduate Assistantship Statement of Interest Example
A graduate assistantship statement of interest is a short job letter, not a second SOP. What two real GA forms ask, plus constructed TA and RA examples.
Graduate Assistantship Statement of Interest Example
A graduate assistantship statement of interest answers two questions the form itself asks: why you want this position, and why you are qualified for it. Keep it to one page or less unless the form says otherwise. It is a job letter for a teaching, research or office role, not a shorter copy of your statement of purpose.
The common shortcut is to paste the SOP's research story into the box. That wastes it. The admission committee already has your SOP. The person hiring a teaching assistant wants to know whether you can run a lab section in English next semester. If you are still drafting the SOP itself, start with a statement of purpose review, then come back here.
The two assistantship forms and three English rules quoted below were checked on October 30, 2026. Forms are set by departments and can change, so use the one your department sends you.
What assistantship forms actually ask
Assistantship applications are usually departmental forms, separate from the graduate application. Two we read:
| Form | What it asks for (quoted) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| University of Houston, Department of Sociology, Application for Graduate Assistantship (the form states no year) | "STATEMENT OF INTENT: Please append a brief statement describing why you are seeking an Assistantship and why you believe you are qualified for this position." | Also lists teaching experience, research experience and three references. It says research assistantships "are contingent on the projects that are currently funded and appointment of students is the prerogative of the faculty member and/or Principle [sic] Investigator (PI) of the project." |
| Florida International University, Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, 2026-2027 Graduate Assistantship Application (doctoral programs) | "Please attach a brief personal statement expressing your interest in an assistantship in pdf format. Make sure that you address any particular need that you have for an assistantship." | Also asks for a CV that includes "skills and knowledge that you possess that make you a good candidate for the assistantship." Its deadline, "February 15, 2026", has passed |
Two things stand out. Both forms ask for a brief statement. And FIU explicitly asks you to address need, so "never mention need" is not a safe rule. Follow the form you have.
The extra test for teaching assistants
If you are an international applicant and the position involves teaching, your English evidence for admission may not be enough. Three universities' rules:
- Illinois: "Admissions minimums are not equivalent to minimums required for holding a teaching assistantship". Teaching assistant candidates need a TOEFL iBT Speaking score of "5.0 (for scores dated after 1/20/2026)" or "24 (for scores dated prior to 1/21/2026)", and "The Duolingo English Test cannot be used to satisfy the English proficiency requirement for teaching assistants." (Illinois international applicants)
- UCLA: a TA exemption by test needs "28+ on the Speaking Section of TOEFL iBT (for exams taken before January 21, 2026) or 6 (for exams taken on or after January 21, 2026)" or "8.5+ on the Speaking Section of IELTS Academic", or a pass on UCLA's own Test of Oral Proficiency. (UCLA English requirements)
- Berkeley: "the oral English proficiency level required for GSI positions is higher than for admissions." (Berkeley requirements)
Our recommendation: if you have a qualifying speaking score, state it in the TA statement in one line. The TA English certification guide covers what happens when your admission waiver does not carry over.
Structure: duties, evidence, availability
Our view: write the statement in three parts, and spend most of the words on the middle one.
- The position (about 40 words). Name the role, the course or lab if you know it, and the semester. "Teaching assistant for introductory programming, Fall 2027."
- Evidence matched to the duties (about 150–200 words). One paragraph per duty the job will involve. Each paragraph names something you did, with a number or a result.
- Availability and practical facts (about 40–60 words). Hours, start date, any English or teaching certification, and the need statement if the form asks for it.
What counts as evidence changes by role:
| Role | Duties the reader is hiring for | Evidence to cite |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching assistant | Lab sections, grading, office hours, explaining material | Courses you can teach and your grades in them; tutoring or teaching hours; a speaking score that meets the TA rule |
| Research assistant | Running methods, handling data, writing up | Specific methods, instruments, software; a thesis or project with what you produced |
| Administrative or graduate assistant | Office work, events, data entry, advising support | Systems you have used; volume handled; prior office roles |
The countercase: a department may say there is no separate statement and that your admission file is used. Then do not write one. And if the form asks a single open question, as FIU's does, answer the question it asks before adding anything from this structure.
Constructed example: a TA statement of interest
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Ananya Rao applies to an MS program in computer science and to a TA position on the department's form.
I am applying for a teaching assistantship in Introduction to Programming (Python) for Fall 2027.
I can teach this course's content. I earned the top grade in my university's two programming courses and in Data Structures. For two years I ran weekly help sessions for first-year students in my department, about 25 students a session. I wrote short practice problems for each session and checked them against the week's lecture. The most common question was about loops and indexing, so I built a ten-minute walkthrough I can adapt for lab sections.
I can grade fairly and quickly. As a senior I graded 120 quiz scripts for one course, using the instructor's rubric, and returned them within four days.
I meet the English requirement for teaching assistants. My TOEFL iBT Speaking score is 5.5, from a test taken in March 2027.
I can work 20 hours a week from the start of the semester, and I am available for evening lab sections.
That example is 161 words. It names the role in the first sentence. Each paragraph begins with a duty ("I can teach", "I can grade") and proves it with a count. It does not repeat the research interest from the SOP. The speaking score line answers the TA English rule directly. The score is invented; use your own real score and test date.
Constructed example: an RA statement for a named lab
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Tomás Ferreira applies for a research assistantship in an invented water-quality lab.
I am applying for a research assistantship in Dr. S. Menon's Water Quality Lab for 2027–28.
The lab's recent project pages describe field sampling of nitrate in agricultural runoff. In my final-year project I collected and tested 60 river samples for nitrate and phosphate over one season, using spectrophotometry, and kept a chain-of-custody log for each sample. I cleaned and analyzed the data in R and wrote a 40-page report.
I would bring field-sampling experience and careful record keeping. I have not used ion chromatography, which the lab lists; I would need training on it.
I can start in August 2027 and can work 20 hours a week.
That example is 108 words. It refers to the lab only through what the lab publishes about itself ("recent project pages describe"), so it does not invent a fit. It names one gap honestly. The University of Houston form's note is a useful reminder here: research appointments depend on funded projects and the PI's decision, so a statement that matches a real project is more useful to that reader than general enthusiasm.
Common mistakes
- Pasting the SOP. The reader wants duties and evidence, not your research story. If you are unsure what the SOP itself should say about funding, see whether to ask for an assistantship in your statement of purpose.
- Leaving out what the form asked for. If the form asks for need, as FIU's does, answer it in one or two factual sentences. If it asks why you are qualified, every paragraph should answer that.
- No position named. Name the course, lab or office if the form or posting gives one.
- Ignoring the length. "Brief" means brief. One page is the ceiling unless stated.
- Forgetting the TA English rule. A teaching statement from an international applicant without a speaking score leaves the reader's first question open.
- Treating the assistantship as free tuition. Read what it actually covers; the tuition waiver and remaining fees guide shows how to check the bill. For the wider picture of who gets these positions, see the TA, RA and GA funding page.
Questions about assistantship statements
How long should a graduate assistantship statement of interest be?
Both forms we read ask for a "brief" statement. Keep it to one page unless your form gives a limit.
Is a statement of interest the same as a statement of purpose?
No. The SOP argues for admission to a program. The assistantship statement argues that you can do a specific job.
Should I mention financial need?
Only if the form asks. FIU's 2026-27 form does ask. The University of Houston form asks why you are seeking the position, which you can answer without discussing money.
Can I use one statement for TA and RA positions?
Write two. The duties differ, so the evidence differs.
