Korean or Japanese Essay to English Statement

Turning a Korean 자기소개서 or Japanese 志望理由書 into an English personal statement: which sections survive, which to cut, and a constructed rewrite.

Korean or Japanese Essay to English Statement

Do not translate a Korean 자기소개서 or a Japanese 志望理由書 into English. Re-sort it. In a master's personal statement, the upbringing and personality sections have no slot. The motivation and study-plan sections become the whole document, and they have to grow to fill it.

An English-language master's application calls this document a personal statement (UK, Hong Kong, Singapore) or a statement of purpose (US). Either way, it is an argument that you are prepared for one programme. A 자기소개서 (self-introduction letter) or 志望理由書 (statement of reasons for applying) is built to introduce a person. The sentences translate. The structure does not. When you have the English version, you can get a free review of your statement against a general master's rubric.

The university pages quoted below were checked on 31 October 2026. The Korean and Japanese sections described here are common formats, not an official template; your university or company may have used different headings.

Translation is the wrong job

Look at what English-language universities say the statement is for. LSE: "a statement that explains your academic interest in, understanding of and academic preparedness for the programme(s) you are applying for" (LSE). Edinburgh: "outlining your academic history and relevant experience" (Edinburgh). Warwick asks three questions: why the course, how you are qualified, and how it will help your career (Warwick).

None of them asks who raised you, what your family values are, or what your personality is. A translated 자기소개서 in the common format answers those questions first and reaches the programme only near the end.

Our view: treat the Korean or Japanese essay as a source file, not a draft. Take out the facts (courses, projects, jobs, numbers), throw away the structure, and write the English statement around one question: why this programme, now, for this goal. The basis is the three pages above. Each defines the statement by preparation and fit, and Warwick adds: "You don't need to repeat information you have already given us."

The countercase: some US universities ask for a separate personal history or diversity statement, where your background is the subject. Your 성장과정 or family section may fit there. Our guide to PS vs SOP in US grad school shows how to tell which documents a programme wants.

If you plan to run the Korean or Japanese text through a translation tool, read translated SOPs and AI detectors first. It covers what schools say about tool translation.

Section map: 志望理由書 to personal statement

A 志望理由書 is closer to an English statement than a 자기소개서, because it is already about reasons. The work is mostly expanding and removing formula.

Register: from polite formula to plain claim

The common Korean and Japanese formats include set phrases of humility and commitment. In English they read as filler, or as a lack of confidence. Warwick's guidance names the English version of the problem: "Try to avoid vague statements such as 'I have always wanted to go to your University because I have a passion for study' or 'I want a better job'."

Three constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant statements:

Before: "Although I am still lacking in many ways, I will do my best to become a person who contributes to society."

After: "I want to work as a data analyst in a public health agency, building the dashboards that regional offices use to track vaccination."

Before: "I chose your esteemed university because of its long tradition and high reputation."

After: "I am applying because the programme's module on survey sampling covers the method my thesis lacked."

Before: "Through this experience I was able to grow as a person."

After: "After that project I could build a regression model without help, which I had not been able to do in my second year."

The pattern: replace each formula with a fact a reader could check. "Your esteemed university" (貴学) becomes the programme's name. "I will do my best" (열심히 하겠습니다, 精一杯努力いたします) becomes the plan. Any course or module you name in your own draft must come from the programme page.

Korean and Japanese specifics readers ask about

Constructed example: one 자기소개서 rewritten

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Kim Ji-won holds a BA in Statistics from a university in Daejeon and has worked for two years at an insurance company. She is applying for an MSc in Data Science. Her Korean 자기소개서, written for a job application, is summarised below in English, section by section.

성장과정: grew up in a family that valued honesty; father a civil servant; learned responsibility as the eldest child.

성격의 장단점: strength, patience; weakness, being too careful; is working on it.

지원동기: admires the company's growth and social contribution.

경력: two years in claims analytics; built a monthly fraud-flag report in SQL; cut manual review time for her team.

입사 후 포부: will work hard and grow into a talented person who contributes.

The English statement keeps only the 경력 facts and the plan, and builds everything else from the programme. This version is 220 words:

I want an MSc in Data Science because my work in insurance has reached the limit of what SQL reports can do. For two years I have worked in claims analytics at a mid-sized insurer in Seoul. I built the monthly report that flags claims for fraud review, and it cut my team's manual checks from three days to one. But the flags are rules I wrote by hand. I cannot yet test whether a model would find cases my rules miss, or explain to an auditor why it flagged one.

My BA in Statistics gave me regression, sampling and probability. What I lack is machine learning and the programming practice to deploy it. Since 2025 I have taken two online courses in Python and machine learning, and I rebuilt one of my fraud rules as a classifier on anonymised data, with my manager's approval.

This programme's modules in [machine learning] and [data ethics] answer both gaps: building the model, and defending it. Its [dissertation or industry project] would let me test a model on claims data of the kind I already know.

After the degree I plan to return to insurance as a data scientist on a fraud team. In five years I want to lead the team that decides which models are safe to use on customers' claims.

What changed: the family, the personality and the company praise are gone. The work facts moved to the centre and gained numbers. The promise to "work hard" became a named job.
