An LLM Straight After Law School: Apply Now?

You can apply to some US LLM programs without work experience, but the rules differ. Harvard does not require it for foreign-law applicants; Columbia strongly encourages it and treats final-year applicants as exceptional cases. Decide what applying now would accomplish.

Separate a requirement from an experience preference

Harvard requires a qualifying first law degree. For applicants from abroad, it does not require work experience, while explaining that two years of work or further study often helps applicants identify what they want from the LLM. Its separate description for US law graduates should not be applied mechanically to foreign LLB applicants. Harvard LLM admissions.

Columbia strongly encourages at least one year of full-time work after law school. Final-year first-law-degree applicants face a narrower rule: admission is exceptional and must serve an immediate, specific career objective unavailable if they waited another year. Columbia LLM application process.

A preference for experience is not a universal minimum. A final-year exception is also not the same situation as having completed the degree but never held a full-time legal job.

If you have not earned a qualifying first law degree, compare legal-studies master’s options without a first law degree before treating an LLM as the default next step.

Decide what waiting would add

First, establish your status: still completing the first law degree, finished but awaiting the formal document, or fully awarded. Check the target program's completion and documentation rules rather than grouping these situations together.

Then compare two plans using specific educational questions:

  • Apply now: What legal question or skill gap can you already identify? Which actual part of the LLM addresses it? Why is this the appropriate time?
  • Gain experience first: What role or further study could deepen that question, expose you to relevant work or help you choose a specialism? What responsibility would you actually have?

Do not assign value to “one year of experience” without examining the work. A role with substantive supervision and relevant decisions may teach you more than a position whose title sounds impressive but duties are unclear. Equally, do not assume a year automatically supplies a polished career plan.

Our recommendation is to favor a concrete next learning step. An LLM should answer an identified educational need, and waiting should have a purpose beyond accumulating elapsed time.

An illustrative recent law graduate

Imagine a recent LLB graduate who has completed a substantial research project on a defined legal issue. They can explain the methods they lack and have identified relevant graduate teaching. They also have an offer for a legal-support role whose responsibilities remain vague.

The absence of full-time experience does not automatically end the LLM inquiry. They should compare the program's admissions rule and training with what the offered role would actually teach them. No example here establishes that their application would succeed.

Now change the facts: the applicant cannot yet identify a field of interest and wants the LLM mainly because it seems like the next credential. A well-supervised role could help them discover the legal problems they want to study before committing to another degree.

If the applicant is still in the final year, they must additionally examine any exceptional-admission rule rather than relying on advice aimed at graduates whose degrees are already complete.

Prepare the statement within the school's rules

The LLM writing guide and law essay hub explain the application task. Harvard's LLM instructions prohibit help with the personal statement; Columbia's linked page prohibits outside application assistance. Follow the assistance rules and certification for your submission; an outside review does not change them.

The LLM personal-statement rubric through law statement review examines your own account of legal preparation and purpose. It does not decide admission eligibility.
