LLM or Legal Studies Master's Without an LLB?

Without a first law degree, do not assume an LLM is available because you already hold another bachelor's or master's. Start with the program's entry requirement and your intended work: advanced legal study, legal knowledge for another profession, or qualification to practice law.

The degree names serve different applicants

Harvard's LLM requires either a JD from an ABA-approved US law school or a first law degree from a foreign law school. A STEM degree alone does not satisfy that requirement. Northwestern's Master of Science in Law serves a different audience. Its admissions guidance describes STEM backgrounds broadly, including relevant professional experience and interests at the intersection of law, business and STEM. Choose the purpose before the acronym

Use three questions to narrow the search:

1. Are you building on a qualifying first law degree? If so, investigate the particular LLM's entry rules and academic focus. An unrelated postgraduate degree does not automatically replace its law-degree prerequisite.
2. Do you need legal or regulatory knowledge within another profession? Investigate MSL, MLS or similarly named programs through their actual audience, curriculum and application requirements. Similar names do not prove interchangeable programs.
3. Do you want to qualify to practice law? Identify the relevant jurisdiction and its professional admission requirements before choosing a degree. A course containing law subjects is not evidence that it meets those requirements.

This procedure prevents a common planning error: selecting a prestigious degree title and only later discovering that either its entry rule or its purpose does not match the applicant.

An illustrative biomedical engineer

Illustrative case: A biomedical engineer has no LLB or other first law degree. They want to understand regulation and business decisions surrounding medical products while continuing to work in a technical profession.

Their engineering credential does not meet Harvard's published LLM first-law-degree requirement. Northwestern's MSL description, however, gives them a relevant program to investigate because it explicitly serves STEM professionals without requiring prior legal study.

That is a reason to examine the curriculum, not a prediction of admission or employment. The applicant still needs to explain the particular knowledge gap and why this program addresses it.

Now change the goal: the same engineer wants to represent clients as a lawyer. That is a different education decision. They should investigate the qualification pathway for the intended jurisdiction rather than assume the MSL accomplishes it.

Prepare the statement for the actual program

Applicants who already hold a first law degree face a separate question about LLM entry and work experience.

Northwestern's MSL application asks for an SOP. For a compatible full applicant statement, use the general MS statement rubric and graduate statement review, following the program's own prompt and limit.
