Lund Statement of Purpose: A Form, Not an Essay

It is a fillable PDF form with numbered questions and a word limit on each box, not a continuous essay — and there is no single Lund version. Nine master's programmes at Lund University School of Economics and Management publish their own form for 2027/28, each with its own questions. Write-ups describing one Lund statement of purpose of about a thousand words describe a document that does not exist.

Which programmes ask for one

LUSEM's supporting-documents page names them: Accounting and Finance; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; European and International Trade and Tax Law; Global Development, Population and Economic Change; Information Systems; International Marketing and Brand Management; International Strategic Management; Management; and Managing People, Organisations and Change. It is a school requirement for those programmes, not a Lund University one, and a CV goes with it, for which LUSEM sets no template.

What the form actually contains

Each form has personal-detail fields, then boxes. The Management form instructs: "Fill out the designated form fields and answer the questions on the following pages. You have a limited amount of space to express yourself, so use the 250 word limit in each section wisely."

The limit is not the same everywhere. Management, Managing People Organisations and Change, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, International Marketing and Brand Management and International Strategic Management set 250 words a box; Accounting and Finance and European and International Trade and Tax Law set 200. Two forms do not count words at all: the Information Systems and Global Development forms tell you to "use the 1 400 character limit (including spaces) in each section", which is roughly 220 to 240 English words and is counted by the reader, not by you. The number of boxes varies too — four written questions on the Management form, eight on the Information Systems form.

The questions are programme-specific, and several are not about you

This is what defeats a reused draft. From the 2027/28 forms:

• Management, Q3: "What is active participation to you?"
• Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Q3: "What do the terms Entrepreneur and Entrepreneurship mean to you?"
• Information Systems, Q4: "Please demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the field of Information Systems."
• Information Systems, Q8: "Please identify the two modules (courses) in the Master's Programme in Information Systems that you find most interesting and explain why."

Two of those four ask what you think about a concept or a curriculum, not what you have done. Some boxes are not prose at all: Managing People, Organisations and Change asks you to "List the courses that you have taken in Business Administration" with credits and grades, and Global Development asks for "the 5-10 most relevant courses that you have taken." Converting an Indian B.Tech or B.Com transcript? That table is where your course names and grading scale belong, not the written answers.

One file per programme

LUSEM is explicit: "If you are applying for more than one programme requiring a Statement of purpose, make sure that you fill out and upload the correct version of the document for all the programmes you are applying for." A shortlist of three LUSEM programmes means three completed forms before the document deadline.

Writing 250 words is a different job

A 250-word box has no room for a scene, a childhood interest, or a restatement of the question. Answer in the first sentence, spend three more on one piece of evidence, close on the link to the programme. Then check the answer would be false about any other applicant — a box anyone could have written is the standard failure here, and the next box is too small to recover in.
