Nordic Masters Letters: KTH, Lund, Aalto, DTU

"Nordic motivation letter" describes four different documents. KTH asks for under 500 words with an autobiography inside it. Lund's is a downloadable form, different for each programme. Aalto has no single letter — the requirement belongs to your study option. DTU's is attached to a tuition-fee-waiver application, not to admission. Writing one file and uploading it four times is the mistake this page exists to prevent.

The requirements table

Five schools, five answers, and only one is an admission essay in the usual sense.

KTH: under 500 words, with an autobiography inside it

KTH's programme entry-requirement pages carry the region's fullest instruction. From the MSc Computer Science requirements: "The letter of motivation explains why you have chosen this programme at KTH, what you hope to gain from it and how your interests and skills will help you succeed in your studies. Include an autobiography with the development and relevance of your academic and professional pursuits, extra-curricular activities and related experiences. KTH does not require a standard template, but it must be in English and less than 500 words."

Three forward-looking questions and a backward-looking autobiography, inside 500 words. Coming from an Indian B.Tech with a long list of clubs and internships, treat that clause not as an invitation to list them but as a forced choice of the two or three that explain the programme.

KTH also settles the reuse question: "If you apply to multiple programmes that require a letter of motivation, you should submit one for each and state which programme each letter applies to at the top of the page." Note the second half — even a tailored letter is read wrongly if it does not name its programme in the first line.

One Swedish calendar, whichever school you choose

KTH and Chalmers publish the same national round for 2027 entry: applications open 16 October 2026 and close 15 January 2027, supporting documents and fee 1 February, results 1 April. KTH states the fee plainly: applicants outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are "required to pay an application fee of SEK 900". Lund: nine programmes, nine different forms

Lund's School of Economics and Management requires a Statement of Purpose from nine named master's programmes for 2027/28, and each is its own downloadable PDF form with numbered questions and its own per-box limit — "use the 250 word limit in each section" on five forms, "(Word limit: 200)" on two, and a "1 400 character limit (including spaces)" on the Information Systems and the Global Development forms. The number of questions differs too: four on the Management form, eight on Information Systems. It is not an essay, the questions differ by programme, and LUSEM tells you to "fill out and upload the correct version of the document for all the programmes you are applying for". The questions are quoted in what Lund actually asks in its statement form.

Aalto and the study-option trap

Aalto's admissions page is explicit that there is no Aalto-wide letter: "Study options usually require study-option-specific documents, e.g. motivation letter, CV, certificates of employment, references." It then closes the door on asking: "all instructions for the documents required by the study option are provided on the study option's webpage and additional guidance is not typically provided."

The calendar is the part people miss. Aalto's autumn 2027 application period is 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 at 3 pm UTC +2, documents by 12 January 2027 at 15.00 — a window that opens and shuts over the December holidays, ahead of the Swedish deadline and set by Aalto rather than a national portal.

DTU: the letter that belongs to a fee waiver

DTU's required-documents page attaches its "motivation letter describing your academic achievements, grades, and research experience" to the tuition-fee-waiver application for non-EU/EEA applicants, with a separate one for the Honours Programme. Admission and the fee waiver are different decisions, and a letter written as an admission essay answers the wrong one. DTU's dates put the non-EU/EEA deadline at 15 January and the EU/EEA deadline at 1 March, fee-waiver outcomes in April and study start on 1 September. DTU publishes those dates without a year, so read them as the annual pattern and confirm on the page in your own cycle.

If you are also applying to Erasmus Mundus

The European Commission's own description sets the shape: these programmes "involve at least 3 institutions from at least 3 different countries", you "apply directly to the institution running their chosen programme", and "In most cases, you should submit your application between October and January". The application goes to the consortium, not the EU, and the consortium sets its own document list — so a Nordic university letter does not transfer unchanged, and neither do the references (Erasmus Mundus recommendation letters).

Frequently asked questions

Can I send one letter to KTH, Lund and Aalto?

No. KTH wants one per programme, named at the top; Lund wants the correct programme-specific form; Aalto's requirement is set per study option.

Does DTU need a motivation letter to admit me?

Not as a universal admission document. DTU publishes it inside the tuition-fee-waiver application for non-EU/EEA applicants, and separately for the Honours Programme only.

Which deadline comes first?

Aalto, on 5 January 2027, documents 12 January. DTU's non-EU/EEA deadline (published as 15 January, without a year) falls on the same date as the Swedish national deadline.
