KTH Machine Learning: Motivation Letter

For KTH Machine Learning, use the motivation letter to connect relevant preparation, a specific learning goal and reasons for this programme. Keep it in English and below 500 words. The letter cannot replace prerequisites, references or the separate summary sheet.

Our recommendation is to choose a small amount of evidence and interpret it. Compressing a long US-style SOP by removing connecting sentences usually produces a dense list of achievements. A short letter needs a narrower argument, not the same argument in smaller type.

What the programme actually asks for

KTH's Machine Learning entry page asks why you chose the programme, what you expect to gain and how your interests and skills support your studies. It also requests a concise account of the development and relevance of your academic, professional and other experiences. There is no prescribed letter template.

The same page lists specific mathematical and computing preparation, including algebra, calculus, probability/statistics, programming and algorithms/data structures. Its selection considers previous grades, motivation and prior education. Do not turn the motivation letter into a claim that enthusiasm compensates for every missing foundation.

KTH requires separate letters for multiple programmes that request them, with the programme identified at the top. Its Machine Learning summary sheet is submitted through the linked form when available, rather than uploaded as a substitute letter. Follow the current programme checklist; do not add documents solely because a forum commenter says they helped.

Choose the argument before choosing the opening

Write three private sentences: what you are prepared to study, what you need to learn next and why this programme addresses that need. If they contain only “AI is the future” and “KTH is prestigious,” investigate the programme and your own experience before polishing.

The most useful evidence may be a thesis, a demanding course project or a professional task. Select it because you can explain a relevant decision. A publication title or employer name does not automatically identify the strongest paragraph.

For an Indian engineering applicant, the preparation question is especially concrete: which completed courses and projects establish the mathematical and computing foundation? Identify the actual record. A degree title alone does not describe the depth of every subject, and an internship should not be relabelled as formal coursework.

Use the CS project-selection guide if several experiences compete for the same space. The letter's short limit makes duplication expensive.

A document map for the application

This is our drafting map, not an additional KTH requirement. The current instructions control each field and upload. If the form and page appear inconsistent, ask the programme coordinator about that specific discrepancy.

Case A: research experience with an evaluation question

Constructed GradPilot case; not a real KTH applicant. A final-year computing student has an image-analysis thesis and several smaller course projects. The thesis contains an evaluation decision they can explain; the other projects mainly repeat the same tools.

Our recommendation is to center the thesis and give the supporting coursework only the space needed to establish preparation. A possible passage is:

In my supervised image-analysis project, I compared two ways of dividing the observations for evaluation. The model's apparent advantage changed with that choice. I implemented the comparison and discussed its limitations with my supervisor. The experience made me want a stronger understanding of statistical learning and evaluation, beyond selecting a model from a single performance score.

This passage supplies a contribution and a training need. It does not yet complete programme fit. The applicant must investigate KTH's current curriculum and identify the specific offering that addresses the need, including any conditions on access.

A weak continuation would praise Stockholm's innovation scene without returning to the academic question. A stronger one would explain why the programme's verified training structure helps the applicant develop the capability just named.

If the supervisor designed the comparison, the applicant must credit that. If no comparison was completed, the result cannot be invented. Specificity is useful because it is truthful, not because the sentence contains technical vocabulary.

Case B: industry experience without a research publication

Second constructed case. A software engineer has deployed a classification service but has no research paper. Their strongest experience concerns a mismatch between evaluation data and actual use.

A possible passage is:

While maintaining a classification service, I found that our evaluation set represented routine cases better than the difficult cases users reported. I helped document the mismatch and build a more informative evaluation set. The work gave me a practical reason to study the assumptions behind model evaluation and to strengthen the mathematical foundation for those decisions.

The applicant can explain relevant preparation without calling the service a novel research method. They should still document the required academic foundation through the appropriate records. Professional experience does not itself certify equivalence to every listed course.

Our recommendation changes if the record lacks a required foundation. The next action is to investigate the requirement and any published recognition process, rather than use the entire letter to argue that work experience should override it.

A career goal can be applied rather than doctoral. Explain the kind of work for which the training is useful. Do not invent a PhD ambition because the word “research” appears on the programme page.

How much autobiography belongs below 500 words?

Enough to explain development and relevance. KTH's request does not require a chronological account of your whole life. Choose the experiences that make the programme choice intelligible.

An extracurricular activity may matter if it changed the direction, demonstrated relevant preparation or adds something important that the technical project does not. It does not deserve space merely because it appears on your CV.

The opening can state a current technical question or training objective. A personal event may work when it directly explains that objective, but it should not consume the space needed for preparation and fit. Follow the actual prompt rather than a universal rule that every letter must begin with either childhood or research.

Use a space budget without turning it into a template

Before drafting, reserve room for the complete argument: purpose, selected evidence, programme connection and future direction. Then write the first version in your own words and count it.

If it is too long, remove a repeated function before cutting the explanation that makes a project understandable. Two paragraphs showing the same programming skill are a stronger candidate for deletion than the sentence explaining why the degree is needed.

Do not solve the limit with unreadable formatting. KTH states a word limit, and the document should remain easy to read. A lengthy address block is rarely the most useful use of the available space unless the application specifically requests it.

Must I mention professors?

Only when a verified research connection serves your actual purpose. A named professor is not automatically stronger than a clear curriculum-based reason for a master's. Do not imply that naming someone reserves supervision.

Should I explain Sweden's immigration opportunities?

Keep this admission letter on the requested academic and professional argument. Private destination planning is a separate task. Do not manufacture a research motivation or a return intention to fit an imagined admissions preference.

Can I send the same letter to another KTH programme?

Review the short letter as a complete argument

Ask a reader to identify your preparation, learning goal and reason for Machine Learning at KTH. If they can only list your tools, revise the connection.
