MEM Scholarships: Is Another Form Required?

An MEM application can put you into one scholarship pool while leaving another aid application incomplete. Identify the specific award: Northwestern's named merit scholarship needs no extra application, while Dartmouth MEM need-based aid requires separate financial evidence.

The aid category changes the paperwork

Northwestern Engineering Management's Albert H. Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship is merit-based and considered during the admission application process. The program says no additional application or documents are required for consideration; it offers a limited number of awards. Northwestern MEM financial aid.

Dartmouth's MEM section asks applicants interested in need-based aid to indicate that interest in the graduate application and submit the specified financial documents. For international applicants, these include a CSS Profile with parental information regardless of dependency status, plus the requested parental tax forms or income statements. These processes are not contradictory. They evaluate different funding categories using different evidence. Neither an application checkbox nor automatic consideration is an award decision.

Make one record for each award

Do not create a single “financial aid complete” checkbox for the whole university. Give each intended funding route its own row:

For each row, add the deadline, responsible office and status of every required item. Mark submitted materials separately from an actual award. If family circumstances make a requested document unavailable, ask the financial aid office what evidence it accepts; do not substitute an applicant-written estimate without instructions.

At Dartmouth, use the Master of Engineering Management section. The same page also covers other engineering degrees, with different procedures and timing. A requirement from the MEng, MS or undergraduate section should not be copied into the MEM checklist.

An illustrative Indian applicant's two files

Illustrative case: An Indian engineer submits completed admission applications to Northwestern MEM and Dartmouth MEM. They assume both schools will determine every kind of support from the academic application alone.

For Northwestern's Rubenstein scholarship, the published process supports consideration without another application. The applicant should record that route as considered through admissions, while leaving the award result unresolved.

For Dartmouth need-based MEM aid, the applicant must also follow the financial-document process. Financial independence does not remove the parental-information requirement stated on its page. If the applicant has not supplied the required financial evidence, submitting the academic application does not finish that aid file.

Now suppose a third opportunity is an outside fellowship. Neither school's internal process establishes that sponsor's requirements. The applicant needs a third row, rather than assuming that a university will forward the file.

Before deciding between offers, obtain the actual award terms and identify what remains uncovered. A scholarship's existence or maximum advertised benefit should not be entered as support already promised to you.
