Half of universities say under 32 words about AI. These 8 wrote 80+ words each. What they share — and why detail matters.
The 8 Most Detailed AI Policies in U.S. Admissions
The median U.S. university says 32 words about AI in admissions across its entire public-facing policy. The most detailed ones say 96. That gap is not a rounding error — it is the difference between a school that has thought about AI and a school that has not.
We analyzed all trigger_quotes text from 174 institutional AI policies in our policy database. Most schools sit between 25 and 40 words. A long tail of L0 schools contribute close to nothing — their "policy" is a generic honor-code reference, not an AI-specific statement. At the top of the distribution, eight schools wrote 80+ verbatim words each. Those eight are the focus of this piece.
Detail matters because the practical question every applicant asks — "Can I use AI for X?" — is answered by specificity, not by a permission level. Two L2 schools can sound identical at the rubric level and disagree completely about whether translation, paraphrase, or readability tools are acceptable. The schools below tell you which.
What "detailed" means here
Specificity is total verbatim quote word count: the sum of every trigger_quotes[*].quote field for that school in our dataset. The quotes come directly from official admissions pages, application portals, or signed dean-level posts. Notes are excluded. Program-level overrides count when they are quoted in the institution's record.
The L/D/E rubric framing — Permission / Disclosure / Enforcement — comes from our classification methodology. For this analysis, we left L/D/E aside and asked a flatter question: which schools simply said the most?
Distribution across 174 schools:
- Median: 32 words
- Mean: 36 words
- Top 8 floor: 80 words (roughly 2.5× the median)
- Top score: 96 words (Georgetown and UC San Diego, tied)
- Minimum: 9 words (placeholder boilerplate for schools with no AI-specific text)
The shape of the curve is heavy-tailed: a handful of schools dominate the discourse, and the silent majority barely participates. For the 70% of schools that are L0/D0/E0, the entire policy fits in a single tweet.
The 8 most detailed AI policies
1 (tie). Georgetown University — 96 words
L4 / D3 / E2. /ai-policies/georgetown-university
Georgetown is the strictest school in the top 8 — and the most detailed. The undergraduate office prohibits AI outright; Georgetown Law softens to L3; McDonough Business School flips to L2. The institution's policy text reflects all three audiences in the same record:
"use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to complete any portion of the application, including essays, is prohibited"
"the only person who may be engaged in the actual writing is you"
"Friends, family members, advisors, etc. — whether real or artificial — are not applying to Georgetown Law; you are"
"If you would omit or downplay how you used an AI tool, you should adjust your plan"
"generative AI may be a useful tool as you structure and refine your essay"
"Think of generative AI as a supportive resource, much like asking a friend for brainstorming assistance"
What makes this detailed is not just length — it is internal contradiction handled in plain text. Georgetown is one of the few schools that publishes both a hard ban (undergrad) and an explicit permission (MSBA, ESM) without flinching. Most schools choose one posture and stop. 1 (tie). UC San Diego — 96 words

UCSD's policy is sourced through the broader University of California system — a unique pattern in the dataset, where five separate quotes from two UC system articles describe permitted use, prohibited use, and enforcement in equal measure:
"A personal insight question written by AI is not going to be very good, because it's not going to teach us anything about the student"
"While using AI as a tool is one thing, using a completely AI-generated answer is another — and one that is equivalent to academic dishonesty"
"Whatever you ultimately submit better be your own creation"
"An AI tool can help you with structure and readability, but use it with caution"
"UC runs plagiarism checks on applications, and if your PIQs are found to have been generated by AI, you could be disqualified"
The detail here comes from the UC system's willingness to name the enforcement mechanism. Most schools that imply detection do not say which check, when, or with what consequence. UCSD's record states the screen, the trigger, and the outcome. That makes it the rare policy that an applicant can actually plan around. 3. UC Santa Barbara — 89 words

UCSB is the most surprising entry. The school sits at L2 (line-level editing permitted) but pairs that permission with a D3 attestation — applicants sign the UC Statement of Integrity, which explicitly references AI:
"Students may receive advice on content and editing, including the use of generative artificial intelligence software to assist with readability, but content and final written text must be their own"
"whatever you ultimately submit better be your own creation"
"an AI tool can help you with structure and readability, but use it with caution"
"We do run the PIQ responses through plagiarism detection software"

The Statement of Integrity quote is the cleanest single-sentence articulation of the L2/D3 stance in the entire dataset — here is what you can use, here is the boundary, here is what you affirm. 4. UC Davis — 87 words

UC Davis is the only top-8 school whose policy text spans both undergraduate and a named graduate program (the Graduate School of Management MBA). The institutional record carries quotes from both:
"AI is a tool that you can use... whatever you ultimately submit better be your own creation"
"We do run the PIQ responses through plagiarism detection software"
"A personal insight question written by AI is not going to be very good, because it's not going to teach us anything about the student"
"Applicants may use AI tools to assist with clarity, grammar and readability across application materials"
"Use of AI to generate or fabricate responses, personal statements, essays or any other part of the application is prohibited"
UC Davis is also one of only two schools in the entire dataset that uses the word "fabricate" in a disallowed-uses sentence. That single word distinguishes Davis from the rest of the field: most policies worry about copy-pasted prose, but Davis names the harder integrity problem — manufactured experience. 5. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai — 82 words

Mount Sinai is the only medical school in the top 8 and the only top-8 school whose record carries an E0 (no stated enforcement). What it does instead is enumerate ethical and unethical uses in plain language — a framing borrowed from the AAMC's AMCAS 2026 Applicant Guide and applied to ISMMS's own MD program:
"You may use artificial intelligence tools for brainstorming, proofreading, or editing your essays; however, it is essential that the final submission accurately reflects your own..."
"Ethical uses of generative AI include researching medical schools, brainstorming essay topics, and reviewing the grammar and spelling"
"Unethical uses include using generative AI to outline, draft, or write your essays and experience descriptions, copying and pasting directly from an AI generator"
"ISMMS does not allow interviewees to use any form of artificial intelligence during their interview"
This is the rare medical-school policy that lists disallowed activities at the verb level — outline, draft, write, copy, paste, translate. 6 (tie). Caltech — 80 words
L2 / D3 / E1. /ai-policies/california-institute-of-technology-caltech
Caltech is one of two L2 schools in the top 8 — line-level editing permitted, AI-specific attestation required. The detailed text comes from a dedicated Ethical Use of AI Guidelines page that all undergraduate applicants are required to review:
"Failure to comply with the Ethical Use of AI guidelines may result in the rescission of your admission to Caltech."
"Your essays are where we hear your voice — overuse of AI will diminish your individual, bold, creative identity as a prospective Techer."
"The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to generate text for essays is not acceptable."
"The application is found to contain misrepresentations (including inappropriate use of AI in personal essays), or there is concern about academic integrity."
Caltech's detail comes from naming the consequence (rescission) and the comparison frame ("trusted adult test" — implied by guideline review). It also names specific tools — Grammarly and Microsoft Editor — as acceptable, which is one of only eight named-tool mentions across the entire dataset. Caltech's graduate office runs a parallel statement, included in the same record.
6 (tie). Georgia Institute of Technology — 80 words

Georgia Tech is the only tech-flagship in the top 8 and the only school in the dataset whose policy carries a documented continuity trail from July 2023 to September 2025. Rick Clark's office has written the same stance, in different words, across three different posts:
"AI tools can be powerful and valuable in the application process when used thoughtfully"
"your ultimate submission should be your own...you should not copy and paste content you did not create"
"Use it to brainstorm, edit, and refine your ideas"
"you may lean on ChatGPT for brainstorming or initial idea generation, but your voice, your thoughts, style and convictions"
"you should not copy and paste directly out of any AI platform or submit work that you did not originally create"
GT is also one of only 64 schools (about 37% of the dataset) that names ChatGPT explicitly. The 2023 post — Seniors, Can We ChatGPT? — is the earliest dated AI admissions quote in the entire database. Detail here is doing different work than at Georgetown: it is stability over time, not multi-audience complexity. 6 (tie). University of Virginia — 80 words
L2 / D3 / E1. /ai-policies/university-of-virginia
UVA is the third L2 school in the top 8, and the only one whose institutional record includes a fully separate L4 program-level override (the School of Law). The undergraduate text carries the L2 stance and the attestation:
"We ask that you do not cut and paste any part of your essay or personal statements from an AI tool."
"Generative AI may play a minor role in your final product by helping you brainstorm essay topics or check for grammar mistakes."
"You are pledging that the application materials you submit are your original work, not primarily a product of AI."
"They lack your voice, your ideas, and your very personal reflection on how your experiences have shaped you."
UVA's detail is phrasing precision. The phrase "may play a minor role" is unusual — most policies use binary language. "Minor role" implies a quantitative threshold, and the surrounding text fills in what it means (brainstorm, grammar). UVA Law's separate L4 statement — "The personal statement should be written in your own voice without the help of artificial intelligence tools" — is captured in the same record but applies only to JD applicants.
What the top 8 share
The UC system is over-represented. Three UC campuses (San Diego, Santa Barbara, Davis) make the top 8 on the strength of system-coordinated policy text. The UC Statement of Integrity, the UC system news articles, and the Robert Penman commentary are all reused across UC campus records. No other multi-campus system in the United States produces this much shared written guidance. The UC system is the only state-level cohort doing this work at all.
L2/D3 — "permit with attestation" — is the engaged middle. Of the six L2 schools in the dataset that pair line-level permission with an AI-specific attestation, three sit in the top 8 (UCSB, Caltech, UVA). These schools are saying, in effect: yes, you can use AI, and we want you to know we know. That posture takes more text to articulate than either a flat ban (L4) or silence (L0). It is also showing up in our attestation analysis as the fastest-growing cell in the L/D crosstab.
Tech flagships and medical schools are usually quiet — but the ones that speak speak loudest. GT is the only tech-named flagship in the top 8 (MIT, Stanford, Virginia Tech, RPI, Stevens, WPI, NJIT, and others are all L0). ISMMS Mount Sinai is the only medical school. When the silent cohort breaks, the school that breaks it tends to commit fully.
Detail does not predict permission. Georgetown (L4) and Georgia Tech (L2) tie on word count. UCSD (L3), UCSB (L2), and UC Davis (L2) all sit above 85 words. The top 8 spans every permission level except L0 and L1. Specificity correlates with engagement, not with strictness. A school that has thought hard about AI tends to say more — whether the answer ends in yes or no.
What detail does NOT predict
Two cautions. First, detailed does not mean enforceable. Mount Sinai writes 82 words and lists every disallowed activity at the verb level, but the enforcement field is E0 — no stated detection mechanism. Words and checks are independent variables. Second, detailed does not mean recent. UVA's policy carries undated text. Georgetown's undergraduate quote is undated. Caltech's Ethical Use of AI Guidelines page is undated. Only Georgia Tech, UCSD, and UCSB carry dated quotes within their top-8 text. Detail is a snapshot of what is currently published — not a guarantee that the policy is fresh.
What applicants should actually do
For applications to these 8 schools, read the full policy text yourself. Their length is the point: every additional sentence carries a specific permission or prohibition that a summary will flatten. For applications to the other 166 schools, defer to the Common App certification, the AMCAS attestation, or your application platform's honor code. Roughly 18% of schools in our dataset already point applicants back at the Common App's AI language anyway. If the institution itself has not written much, the platform's certification is the operative rule.
And across both groups: write your essays first, then decide whether AI improves anything. The risk of being flagged is real but small. The risk of submitting an essay that reads like it was edited by a machine — visible to a human reader without any detection software at all — is much larger and applies to every school equally, regardless of policy length.
