MS in USA Timeline for Fall 2027 From India
Fall 2027 MS in USA timeline from India, checked Oct 31: GRE by Nov 25 for CMU, nine CS/ECE programs closing Nov 18 to Feb 15, decisions March to April.
MS in USA Timeline for Fall 2027 From India
The nine US CS and ECE master's programs we checked close between November 18, 2026 (Carnegie Mellon's early deadline) and February 15, 2027 (Columbia's final deadline). Carnegie Mellon recommends sitting the GRE by November 25, 2026. The decision and reply dates we found run from March 15 to April 15.
That changes the plan. On October 31 the job is no longer "research universities". It is three things: settle your tests in the next three weeks, write one core statement of purpose in November, and submit in deadline order with each program's time zone in mind. The master's SOP review page shows what a reader checks once the core draft exists.
Every university page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Several pages print a date with no year. We mark those "no year stated", so recheck them inside the application portal before you plan around them.

The checkpoints between now and April
These are the dates that change what you should be working on. The full list of deadlines, with each one converted to IST, is in MS CS deadlines for Fall 2027.
| Date | Program | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 18, 2026, 3 p.m. EST | Carnegie Mellon SCS | Early deadline: "$80 per program if you apply before the early deadline" |
| Nov 25, 2026 | Carnegie Mellon SCS | Last recommended GRE or English test date |
| Dec 1, 11:59 PM Central (no year stated) | Illinois MS CS | Deadline; decision deadline March 15 |
| Dec 9, 2026, 3 p.m. EST | Carnegie Mellon SCS | Final deadline |
| Dec 15, 23:59 Pacific (no year stated) | UCLA CS | Deadline; letters also due |
| Dec 15, 11:59 PM Pacific | USC Viterbi | Fall 2027 scholarship-consideration deadline |
| Dec 16, 2026, 11:59 p.m. PST | UC San Diego CSE | Application closes |
| Dec 16, 11:59 PM ET (no year stated) | Georgia Tech ECE | All Atlanta ECE MS programs except MS Robotics |
| Jan 6, 2027, 8:59 pm PST | Berkeley EECS MEng | Deadline; decisions in March; reply by April 15 |
| Jan 15, 2027, 11:59 PM Pacific | USC Viterbi | Fall 2027 final deadline |

November: settle the tests, then write the core SOP
Tests first, because scores take time to arrive. Carnegie Mellon's admissions page says: "If you need to take or retake your GRE for this application, we highly recommend that you take the exam no later than November 25, 2026. Reportable scores can take two weeks to process, and we may not be able to review scores that arrive after our December 9, 2026, deadline." For English tests, Stanford's CS master's FAQ recommends "that you take the tests at least six (6) weeks before the application deadline".
Before you book anything, check whether your list needs the GRE at all. On the pages we checked, the rule splits three ways:
- Not required: UC San Diego CSE ("The GRE is not required for PhD and MS applications for Fall 2027"), Georgia Tech ECE ("GRE scores are no longer required") and Illinois ("recommended but not required").
- Required: Carnegie Mellon's MS in AI and Innovation ("GRE is required").
- Strongly recommended: Carnegie Mellon's MSCS. If you have no score, its page says "please briefly explain in your statement of purpose." Whether to mention a score at all is covered in should you mention CGPA, GRE or rank in your SOP.
If no program on your list requires the GRE, do not spend November on it.
Then the core SOP. Write one full draft that holds your evidence: projects, internships, coursework and the direction you want to study. You will cut it to each program's limit in December. The limits differ too much to write school by school: UCLA CS asks for an SOP with a "500 word limit" plus a separate 500-word personal statement, and Illinois asks for an Academic Statement of Purpose "between one to two pages" plus personal statements "within 250 words". The MS CS SOP word limits page tabulates the rest.
Our view: skip Carnegie Mellon's November 18 early deadline unless your statement is already finished. The basis is the fee: the early rate is $80 per program and the later rate is $100, so you save $20 per program (our arithmetic). That is not worth a rushed statement.
The countercase: Carnegie Mellon also says "some of our admissions committees will begin reviewing materials sooner than this deadline". If your statement and letters are ready now, submitting early costs you nothing.
Recommenders, in the first week of November. Ask now and give each one your deadline list. UCLA's page says "Letters are due December 15." Carnegie Mellon is more relaxed: "it is okay if the letters arrive a few days late", and you should not wait for them before you submit.
December: the deadline cluster
Six of the dates in the table fall between December 1 and December 16. That is two weeks, so tailoring the core draft has to start in late November.
Illinois sets the pace. Its deadline page says: "It is highly recommended to submit all application materials one month before the deadline to expedite admission decisions." For the December 1 MS CS deadline, one month early means November 1 (our arithmetic). It also warns that "Late applications will not be accepted." If you can only hit the deadline itself, hit that.
Time zones matter more than the date printed on the page. Carnegie Mellon's 3 p.m. EST on December 9 is 1:30 a.m. IST on December 10 (our arithmetic), so treat CMU as a December 9 deadline in India and finish your day early. The Fall 2027 deadline table converts every program the same way.
If one program asks for two statements, write the second one in this window, not the night before. Berkeley's Graduate Division says "The Personal History Statement should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose." The SOP vs personal history statement guide maps which programs want two.
January and February: the second wave
The second wave is where tailoring is cheapest, because the core draft already exists:
- Berkeley EECS MEng: "Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 8:59 pm PST". Berkeley's Graduate Division requires two statements, and its SOP prompt asks you to "be specific about why UC Berkeley would be a good intellectual fit for you."
- USC Viterbi: January 15, 2027, 11:59 PM Pacific. December 15 is the scholarship-consideration date, so treat December 15 as USC's real deadline if funding matters.
- Columbia CS: January 15 first priority and February 15 final (no year stated). Columbia says "We strongly encourage all applicants to meet the 1st deadline", and applications completed after the second deadline "are less likely to be accepted."
- Georgia Tech MSCS: February 1. Its page says the "statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, test scores and GPA are all reviewed carefully". It states no SOP length, so take the limit from the application portal.
Our view: apply to Columbia by January 15, not February 15. Columbia's own wording is the basis: it reviews after both deadlines and calls later files "less likely to be accepted".
March and April: decisions and the April 15 reply
Decisions arrive over about six weeks. Illinois lists a "Decision Deadline" of March 15 for MS CS and releases decisions "as the committee finalizes them". UC San Diego CSE says "All applicants will receive a final decision via the online application by April." Berkeley MEng sends decisions by email in March, and its "Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) Deadline" is April 15.
April 15 is Berkeley MEng's date, not a rule for every school. Read the reply date in each offer letter.
Final-semester grades and the degree certificate
You do not wait for your seventh-semester marks. Carnegie Mellon says: "We do not require you to upload your fall semester grades. If your fall semester grades are not on your transcript by the application deadline, do not worry." It recommends "uploading your transcripts as early as possible."
The degree itself comes later. UCLA CS says: "If offered admission, the final transcript indicating the date of the degree conferral may be submitted during the summer." For applicants still enrolled at an Indian university, UCLA asks for "a copy of your official transcripts" with the university's GPA scale included. What else goes in at submission, and what waits for an offer, is in documents required for an MS in USA application. If one of your institutions did not award a degree, read whether to list an unfinished degree first.
Constructed example: an eight-program plan for a B.Tech final-year
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's plan. Context (invented): Ananya Rao, a final-year B.Tech CS student in Pune, applying to eight MS programs from the table above. She took the TOEFL in August and has no GRE score.
| Week | Task | Why that week |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 1–7 | Check each program's GRE rule; ask three recommenders; start the core SOP | CMU's recommended last test date is November 25, so the GRE decision cannot wait |
| Nov 8–21 | Finish the core SOP; cut the 500-word UCLA version and the one-to-two-page Illinois version | Illinois (December 1) is first |
| Nov 22–30 | Submit Illinois; write the 250-word Illinois personal statement and the UCLA personal statement | Illinois recommends submitting a month early; she misses that and submits before the date |
| Dec 1–8 | Submit Carnegie Mellon MSCS; she skipped the GRE, so the SOP carries one sentence explaining that | CMU closes December 9 at 3 p.m. EST, 1:30 a.m. IST on December 10 |
| Dec 9–15 | Submit UCLA and USC | Both close December 15, Pacific time; USC's December 15 date is the scholarship date |
| Dec 16 | Submit UC San Diego | The application closes December 16 at 11:59 p.m. PST |
| Dec 17 – Jan 5 | Write Berkeley's personal history statement; submit Berkeley MEng | Berkeley closes January 6, 2027 |
| Jan 6–15 | Submit Columbia and Georgia Tech MSCS | Columbia's first priority date is January 15 |
She skips the CMU early deadline because her draft is not finished on November 18. She submits Georgia Tech in January, not February, so that nothing is left for the final month.
Your week-by-week checklist from today
- This week: list every program with its deadline, its time zone, its limit and the number of statements it asks for. Pass condition: no cell left blank. A blank limit means "check the portal", not "no limit".
- By November 7: decide on the GRE using the three-way split above, and book any English test. Ask your recommenders.
- By November 21: a complete core SOP that names your direction and your evidence.
- From November 22: cut and tailor one version per program, in deadline order. Write second statements in the same week as the program's SOP.
- Each submission: convert the closing time to IST, then submit by the evening of the printed date in India, or a day earlier for Carnegie Mellon's 3 p.m. EST close.
- After submitting: check each portal for missing letters and scores. Do not reopen the essay.
Questions about the Fall 2027 MS timeline
Is it too late to apply for an MS in the USA for Fall 2027?
No. Every deadline in our table is still ahead on October 31, 2026, starting with Carnegie Mellon's early deadline on November 18. Illinois is the tightest, because it recommends submitting a month before its December 1 deadline.
Do I need my final-semester marks to apply?
Not at Carnegie Mellon, the one program on our list whose page addresses it. Carnegie Mellon says fall grades "are not needed for the admissions review process". Upload the transcript you have now.
When will I hear back from US universities?
On the pages we checked: March 15 is Illinois's decision deadline, Berkeley MEng decides in March, and UC San Diego CSE decides "by April". Other programs publish their own dates, and some publish none.
Should I apply for Spring 2027 instead?
At USC Viterbi, that window has closed: its Spring 2027 deadline was October 15. Several programs in the table admit for fall only. Illinois's MS CS and UCLA CS, for example, both say so.
