Nursing School Update After Applying: NursingCAS

New grades go through NursingCAS Academic Update, not email. For the 2026–2027 cycle, the first window runs December 14, 2026 to February 12, 2027, and you can update your grades once per window. Most other sections lock when you submit, so those updates go to each program directly.

Our view: sort what you want to send into one of two kinds, a grade or anything else, and each kind has exactly one right channel. Grades go through Academic Update after the term ends. A CCRN pass, a new ICU job or a changed start date goes in a short email to the program. Two weeks of silence after an interview is not news, and it is not a reason to write.

The NursingCAS help page and every program page quoted below were checked on November 7, 2026.

Academic Update windows for 2026–2027

NursingCAS's Academic Update page publishes three windows for the 2026–2027 cycle:

WindowOpensCloses
Fall Academic Update IMonday, December 14, 2026Friday, February 12, 2027
Spring/Summer Academic UpdateMonday, May 24, 2027Friday, August 20, 2027
Fall Academic Update IIMonday, November 29, 2027Friday, January 7, 2028

Updates must be submitted "no later than 11:59 PM ET on the last day of the academic update period." The page lists January 7, 2028 as the date official transcripts are due for Academic Update in this cycle.

If you applied in the 2025–2026 cycle and are still active, your last window is different: the same page lists Fall Academic Update II for that cycle as November 30, 2026 to January 8, 2027.

The rules that trip people up, quoted from the page:

  • It is optional. "Academic Update is an optional process; check with your programs to determine if they require it."
  • You must be verified. You need "at least one program in the Verified status by the final Academic Update date."
  • One update per window. "Note that you can only update your grades once during the Academic Update period." The page tells you to wait "until that term is completed and you’ve received your final grades before you submit."
  • Transcripts come after, not before. Send official transcripts "as soon as you receive an email confirmation from NursingCAS confirming that your Academic Update was successfully submitted. Do not request that transcripts be sent to NursingCAS beforehand; they will not qualify for Academic Update and will need to be resubmitted."
  • Verification takes time. Verifications "can take up to 10 business days to complete."
  • Old terms stay closed. "You cannot update terms that are already verified or add terms from previous years."

Our recommendation: if your fall grades post in mid-December, submit the update in the first week of January, after every fall grade is final, and order transcripts the same day the confirmation email arrives. Submitting on December 15 with one grade still missing uses up your only update.

What NursingCAS will not let you change

The same help page says: "Once you submit your application, most sections are locked to prevent edits." After submission you can still edit contact and profile information, add programs whose deadlines have not passed, add or edit incomplete reference requests, add new entries to some Supporting Information and Program Materials areas ("you are unable to edit or delete existing entries"), and add optional documents. For anything else, the instruction is: "If you have updates for other sections of your application, submit these updates directly to your programs."

Programs add their own rules on top. The University of New England's nurse anesthesia admissions page says: "Experiences can be added, but edits of previously submitted information is not allowed. Coursework can be updated; however, updates are not verified and will not affect any GPA calculations." Read your program's own page before you count on an update changing your GPA there.

Not every program uses NursingCAS. Duke's nurse anesthesia program says to "Access the online application through the Duke University School of Nursing admissions portal," and Villanova's uses its own "Graduate Program Online Application." Academic Update does nothing for those applications. Use the program's portal or admissions email.

When an email to the program is worth sending

What changedChannelWhy
A fall or spring grade you listed as in progressNursingCAS Academic UpdateNursingCAS verifies the course and recalculates GPAs
A prerequisite you added after submittingAcademic Update, if the term is openPrograms also set their own rules; see prerequisite rules by program
CCRN passed after you submittedEmail the programIt is not coursework, so Academic Update cannot carry it; CRNA programs treat CCRN differently (below)
New ICU job, unit or charge roleEmail the programExisting entries cannot be edited after submission
Changed address, phone or emailEdit in NursingCASContact information stays editable
Programs on their own portalTheir portal or emailAcademic Update does not reach them
No news, two weeks after the interviewNothing yetSee the last section

The CCRN row depends on the program. Otterbein requires "proof of CCRN by application deadline ( a scheduled date to take the test is not acceptable)." UAMS says "Active CCRN® certification is required for admission." Rutgers says "CCRN test scores will be requested of candidates invited to interview." Duke says "CCRN certification is strongly encouraged."

So a CCRN pass after submission is real news at a program like Duke, where it was encouraged and not yet in your file. At Otterbein, a pass after the deadline arrives too late to count for that application. Send the email where the credential can still be read. The CRNA requirements table lists each program's CCRN rule.

A constructed update email

Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants' emails. Names and programs are invented.

Constructed example: ABSN, a completed prerequisite

Context (invented): Leonie Vasquez listed microbiology as in progress, finished it in December and submitted it through Academic Update. She also emails her first-choice program so the grade is not missed.

Subject: Application update, Leonie Vasquez, accelerated BSN, NursingCAS ID 0000000

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing with one update to my application. I completed Microbiology with lab in December with an A, and I submitted the grade through NursingCAS Academic Update on January 5. My official transcript was requested the same day.

All of my prerequisites are now complete. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, Leonie Vasquez

That is 68 words including the subject line. It names the grade, the channel and the date, so staff do not have to look for it.

Constructed example: CRNA, CCRN passed

Subject: CCRN certification update, Kenji Ishikawa, nurse anesthesia applicant

Dear Dr. Ndlovu and the Admissions Committee,

I passed the CCRN exam on November 20; my certification number is 0000000. Since submitting my application I have also started precepting new graduate nurses in our cardiovascular ICU.

Thank you for your time and for considering my application.

Sincerely, Kenji Ishikawa, RN, CCRN

That is 60 words including the subject line. Two facts, each one the program could not see before.

Two weeks and no response

Check what the program says about timing before you write:

  • Duke: "Official decision notifications are typically released within 1-2 weeks of the interview."
  • Detroit Mercy: "The Admissions Committee goal is to notify all applicants of their decision within two weeks after the interviews."
  • UNE: "Admission decisions released: On a rolling basis after the application deadline"
  • Rutgers: applicants "generally receive their admissions decision prior to the end of the fall semester."

Our recommendation: wait until the program's own window has passed, plus a few business days, then send one status question. At a rolling program like UNE, wait at least until the stated deadline has passed.

Constructed example: a status check

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email.

Dear Mr. Quist, I interviewed on October 9 and understand decisions usually come within two weeks. Could you tell me whether a decision has been made on my application, or when I should expect one? Thank you, Nadia Ferro

That is 39 words. It cites the program's own timing and asks one question.

A thank-you note is a different document with a different deadline: see the thank-you email after a nursing school interview. For program-by-program essay and interview rules, see the ABSN requirements and essays table.

Questions about NursingCAS updates

Can I update my NursingCAS application after submitting?

Partly. Grades go through Academic Update during a window; contact details, new programs, new references and new optional documents can still be added. "Most sections are locked," and other updates go "directly to your programs."

When is the NursingCAS Academic Update for 2026–2027?

Fall Academic Update I runs December 14, 2026 to February 12, 2027; Spring/Summer runs May 24 to August 20, 2027; Fall II runs November 29, 2027 to January 7, 2028.

Can I do Academic Update twice in one window?

No. "You can only update your grades once during the Academic Update period."

Should I send transcripts before I submit the update?

No. NursingCAS says transcripts sent beforehand "will not qualify for Academic Update and will need to be resubmitted."

Review the writing you send next

An update email is short enough to check against the program's rules yourself; the essays you write for the next program or the next cycle are not. Get a free Quick Review of your ABSN essays against GradPilot's ABSN application essays rubric; it checks that each answer does the job its question sets and that your evidence fits that job. CRNA applicants adding a new ICU role or CCRN to next cycle's essays can use the CRNA personal statement rubric, which looks for critical-care preparation stated in terms the reader can see.

More nursing application guides are on the nursing essays hub. If a reference is still outstanding, forward your referee the NursingCAS reference guide; it covers the request email, the form and the cutoff.
