Oxford and Cambridge Master's Deadlines 2027

Oxford and Cambridge set master's deadlines course by course. At the 16 courses we checked for 2027 entry, they run from 13 November 2026 to 25 February 2027. At Cambridge, anyone applying for University funding must apply by the 8 December 2026 funding deadline if it comes first.

Both universities call the document you upload a personal statement or a statement, and Cambridge splits it into named portal fields. This page is about dates. For what goes in the statement, see the sibling guides to the Oxford statement of purpose and the Cambridge MPhil reasons for applying.

Every page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Oxford's central graduate admissions pages, which hold each course's official deadline, returned a bot challenge to our checker that day. The Oxford rows therefore come from department websites. Confirm each date on the course page before you plan around it.

Our view: your real deadline is the day your referees can deliver, not the course date. Cambridge requires references by the same deadline as your application, and Oxford's Internet Institute says applications "must be complete by the deadline, including references." An international applicant whose professor is slow to reply should plan to that date. The countercase: if you are self-funded and your Cambridge course closes in February, you have room to wait for a stronger draft. And the Cambridge LLM assesses applications "as a gathered field after the application deadline", so applying early there does not bring an earlier decision.

How the deadlines work at each university

Cambridge. The application deadlines page sets four rules:

  • "You must submit your complete application, including supporting documents, by the relevant application deadline or your application will be withdrawn."
  • "Your referees will also need to submit their references by the same deadline."
  • If you are applying for funding, you have two deadlines, the course's and the funding's: "You must submit your application by whichever deadline is earlier."
  • "All application deadlines are 11:59pm (before midnight) UK time on the stated date."

It adds two warnings that matter for international applicants. "Courses can reach capacity and close before the deadline. If a course closes early, this will be indicated on the course page." And: "If you're applying for a visa or an application fee waiver, you should apply much earlier than the application deadline to allow enough time for additional processing."

Oxford. We could not load the central rules. Two department pages state rules for their own courses:

  • The Oxford Department of International Development says: "The deadlines for 2027-28 entry applications are 12 noon (ie midday) UK time on:" 2 December 2026, 7 January 2027 (its two DPhil degrees only) and 26 January 2027.
  • The Oxford Internet Institute says its MSc applications "must be complete by the deadline, including references." It offers two deadlines and says: "Applications in both deadlines are given equal consideration … The main difference is that applicants applying in November receive an earlier decision."

Note the time difference. On these pages, Oxford's development department closes at midday UK time, while every Cambridge deadline is 11:59pm UK time. If you apply to both on the same date, submit the Oxford application in the morning, UK time.

Every Cambridge page above also lists a Course Funding Deadline of 8 December 2026 and a "Gates Cambridge US round only" deadline of 14 October 2026, which has passed. Cambridge says these funding deadlines "apply to applications for courses starting in Michaelmas 2027, Lent 2028 and Easter 2028."

What the table settles:

  • Development Studies has a different shape at each university. Oxford's MPhil closes on 2 December 2026. Cambridge's closes on 26 January 2027, unless you want funding, in which case 8 December 2026. An applicant to both is working to two dates within six days of each other in December (our arithmetic).
  • For anyone applying for Cambridge funding, every course in the table effectively closes on 8 December 2026, because the earlier deadline wins.
  • Three Cambridge courses close on the funding date anyway: Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence, Politics and International Studies, and the LLM.

The Oxford course pages for MSc Advanced Computer Science and MPhil Economics, which the research for this page started from, were behind the same bot challenge. They are left out rather than guessed.

Two applicants, two different real deadlines

Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants. The names are invented; the dates come from the table.

Case 1, Priya (invented): funded, two universities. Priya applies to Cambridge's MPhil in Economics and wants University funding. She also applies to Oxford's MSc in Economics for Development. Her course dates are 2 February 2027 and 26 January 2027. Her real first deadline is 8 December 2026, Cambridge's funding deadline, with both references in. She asks her referees for letters by 1 December 2026, a week early, so a late letter does not cost her the funding round.

Case 2, Tunde (invented): self-funded, flexible. Tunde applies to Oxford's MSc Social Data Science and Cambridge's MPhil in Advanced Computer Science, paying his own fees. Oxford gives him a choice of 13 November 2026 or 7 January 2027, with equal consideration. With under two weeks left before 13 November and one referee not yet confirmed, he takes 7 January 2027. His Cambridge date is 25 February 2027, and nothing makes it earlier, because he is not applying for funding.

Same two universities, same cycle, and their binding Cambridge dates are more than two months apart: 8 December 2026 against 25 February 2027 (our arithmetic). The difference comes from funding and from the references, not from the university.

Backward plan from your binding deadline

Work out your binding date (call it D), then count back. The rules are the universities'; the timings are our recommendations.

  1. Find D. For each course, write down the course deadline and, if you want funding, the funding deadline. At Cambridge, D is the earlier of the two. Across all your courses, your first D is the one you plan to.
  2. D minus 8 weeks: confirm the course is still open. Cambridge marks early closures on the course page.
  3. D minus 6 weeks: ask your referees. Give them D minus 7 days as their date. Both universities' pages above want references in by the deadline.
  4. D minus 5 weeks: choose written work or draft the proposal. Several Cambridge courses in the table ask for a proposal or writing sample; check your course's list.
  5. D minus 4 weeks: draft the statement for each course separately. Cambridge fields have character limits that change by course; the Cambridge MPhil statement guide lists them.
  6. D minus 2 weeks: if you need a visa or a fee waiver, submit now. Cambridge says to apply "much earlier" in both cases.
  7. D minus 7 days: submit, then chase any missing reference.
  8. On D: watch the clock. 12 noon UK time at Oxford's development department, 11:59pm UK time at Cambridge.

If you are also applying for the Gates Cambridge scholarship, its statement has its own questions; see the Gates Cambridge statement guide. For UK universities that admit on a rolling basis or in rounds instead, see UK master's deadlines: rolling vs rounds.

Questions about Oxford and Cambridge deadlines

Is there one Oxford master's deadline in January 2027?

No. Deadlines are set per course. The courses we could check close on 13 November 2026, 2 December 2026, 7 January 2027 or 26 January 2027.

What time do Cambridge applications close?

"All application deadlines are 11:59pm (before midnight) UK time on the stated date."

Do references have to arrive by the deadline?

At Cambridge, yes: "Your referees will also need to submit their references by the same deadline." Oxford's Internet Institute says the same for its MSc. For how many referees each UK university wants, see UK master's references.

Can a Cambridge course close before its deadline?

Yes. "Courses can reach capacity and close before the deadline. If a course closes early, this will be indicated on the course page." Law applicants: the Oxford BCL and MJur personal statement is 300 words, and the written work matters more.
