UK Master's Deadlines 2027: Rolling vs Rounds

There is no single UK master's deadline for September 2027 entry. Universities use three systems: rolling admission that closes when places fill (LSE), rounds with fixed dates (Imperial and Edinburgh business schools), and fixed course deadlines (Cambridge). Universities using each of the three warn that a course can close before its stated date.

The document that decides your timing is the personal statement, because it is the part you cannot finish in an afternoon. Transcripts and English scores exist already; a programme-specific statement does not. When it is drafted, a UK master's personal statement review can check it before you submit.

Every university page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Rounds and closures change during the cycle, so recheck your programme's page in the week you apply.

Our view: in the UK, "no deadline" means the course can close in any week, so a finished, programme-specific statement submitted between November 2026 and January 2027 is worth more than a more polished one in March. The countercase: if your course has a fixed deadline and assesses every application together afterwards, as the Cambridge LLM does, submitting early buys you nothing except protection against early closure. There, use the time to make the statement better.

Three deadline systems

SystemExample (checked 31 October 2026)What the page says
RollingLSE taught master's"We run a rolling admissions system where programmes close once all places have been filled." The 2027/8 cycle "began on 7 October"
Rolling, with a final dateWMG MSc Engineering Business Management"Our official application deadline is 31 August 2027, however please note that this course will close early if capacity is reached ahead of that deadline."
RoundsImperial Business School MSc FinanceFour rounds; "Candidates should submit their application by 23.59 UK time on the day of the application deadline."
RoundsEdinburgh Business School MSc Business AnalyticsFive rounds; "All deadlines: 11:59pm (UK time)"
Fixed per courseCambridge"Courses can reach capacity and close before the deadline." References are due by the same deadline

Oxford also sets fixed deadlines per course. Both universities' 2027 dates are in the sibling page on Oxford and Cambridge master's deadlines, so they are not repeated here.

How to read your programme's page, in one rule each:

  • Rolling: the date that matters is the day places run out, and no page tells you it in advance. Apply as soon as your statement is finished.
  • Rounds: the round you apply in sets your decision date. Later rounds may not open for your course.
  • Fixed: the date is real, but check whether a funding deadline sits earlier.

What early closure looks like on the official pages

Five universities warn about early closure in their own words:

UniversityThe warning, verbatimWhere a closure is shown
LSE"programmes close once all places have been filled"The Available programmes list, by programme, for Home and Overseas applicants
Imperial"Some courses close earlier due to high demand."Course pages (deadlines page)
Cambridge"If a course closes early, this will be indicated on the course page."The course page
Edinburgh Business School"We will confirm on this application deadline page when a programme closes for new applications."The programme's deadline page
WMG, Warwick"courses with limited capacity may close considerably earlier than the deadline" (how to apply)Not stated

On 31 October 2026, LSE's list showed every programme as Open for both Home and Overseas applicants. The page was last updated on 8 October 2026. LSE adds that "when programmes close, this applies to new applicants only". At WMG, timing is not the only constraint: it asks you to apply for only one of its courses, as the Warwick MSc personal statement rules explain.

We wanted to quote a 2026-entry closure from a live course page as a worked example. UCL's course pages returned a bot challenge to our checker on 31 October 2026, so we do not quote one. None of the pages we checked publishes a programme's closing week in advance, so do not plan around a guess.

Rounds compared: Imperial and Edinburgh

The two systems differ in what happens if you are not admitted in your round:

  • Edinburgh says you will "either be notified that your application has been unsuccessful, or we will carry your application forward to be considered in the next round." It also keeps accepting applications after round 5 "If the programme is not full by the final application deadline".
  • Imperial says "we cannot guarantee that places will be available, or that courses will remain open, in later rounds."

Our recommendation: for a round-based programme, aim for the round after you finish your statement, not the last round you are eligible for. If you are reading this on 31 October 2026, that is Edinburgh's round 2 (9 December 2026) or Imperial's round 2 (6 January 2027). For the essay questions in Imperial's rounds, see the Imperial Business School MSc essays page.

Funding and visa dates sit earlier than the course date

The course deadline is often not your first date:

  • Scholarships at Imperial. "You must submit your course application before you can apply for one of our scholarships, which have deadlines of their own." At the Business School, applicants who apply "before the scholarship deadlines" and receive an offer "will automatically be considered for scholarship(s) relevant to their programme", unless a scholarship has extra criteria.
  • LSE needs-based funding. "The Graduate Financial Support Application will open in November and will run until April 2027. You should apply as early as possible, as needs-based funds are allocated on a rolling basis."
  • Cambridge University funding. The course funding deadline on the pages we checked is 8 December 2026, and "You must submit your application by whichever deadline is earlier."
  • Visa applicants at Imperial. "As a guide, students who require a student visa to study at Imperial should aim to apply by no later than 18 June in the year that their course is due to start."
  • Visa applicants at Edinburgh Business School. "If you require a visa we recommend that you submit your application by the final round 5 application deadline", which is 9 June 2027 for Business Analytics.

The visa itself is a separate process. GOV.UK's Student visa page says that from outside the UK, "The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course."

A month-by-month plan for September 2027

These timings are our recommendations, built on the dates above.

  1. November 2026. Shortlist programmes and note each one's system: rolling, rounds or fixed. Ask referees now; LSE tells applicants to "approach referees to make sure they are available and willing to write letters on your behalf". Draft the statement for your first-choice programme.
  2. December 2026. Submit to anything rolling and anything with a December round (Edinburgh's round 2 is 9 December 2026). If you want Cambridge funding, 8 December 2026 is your deadline.
  3. January 2027. Submit the next programme-specific statements. Imperial's round 2 closes 6 January 2027. Apply for scholarships that open once your course application is in.
  4. February to March 2027. Decisions start arriving. Use later rounds only for programmes still open; check each page before you write.
  5. April to June 2027. Last rounds. Visa applicants should be finished by early June: Edinburgh's round 5 on 9 June 2027 and Imperial's 18 June guide are the latest dates on these pages.
  6. June to August 2027. Meet offer conditions, pay deposits and apply for the visa no earlier than six months before the course starts.

Two constructed cases

Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants.

Case 1, Mei (invented): three business analytics programmes. Mei finishes her first statement on 25 November 2026. She submits to Edinburgh's round 2 (9 December 2026), then rewrites the statement for Imperial's round 2 (6 January 2027), and applies to an LSE programme that is still listed as Open in the same week. Each application goes in before its round closes, and the LSE one while the programme is still listed as Open.

Case 2, Kofi (invented): one rolling programme, waiting for a test. Kofi's only choice is a rolling programme with a stated final date in August 2027. He plans to wait for a better English score in March. WMG's Engineering Business Management page says that course "will close early if capacity is reached", and WMG says the English result "can be submitted after you have received an offer". So Kofi applies in December 2026 with his statement and sends the score later.

Questions about UK master's deadlines

Does LSE have a deadline for taught master's?

Not a single one. LSE says "programmes close once all places have been filled". Check the Available programmes list before you apply.

Is March 2027 too late to apply?

Not always. Imperial's round 3 closes 10 March 2027 and Edinburgh's round 4 on 21 April 2027. But at rolling programmes, a course you want may already be closed by March, and Imperial does not guarantee later rounds.

Do I need my English test before I apply?

Not at WMG, which says the result "can be submitted after you have received an offer". Check your own programme's page.

When can I apply for the UK Student visa?

From outside the UK, "The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course," per GOV.UK. Before a round closes, check how many references UK master's courses ask for and when each portal emails your referee.

Once offers arrive, see how to reply to a UK master's offer: acceptance, deposits and deferral.
