PhD SOP for Pakistani Students After an MPhil

After an MPhil, your thesis is the research record your statement is built on. At the University of Manchester, a four-year bachelor's plus a two-year master's, both from HEC-recognised universities with 70–85% overall, is the stated PhD-entry route for Pakistani applicants. So state your education length once, in the form's terms, and spend the middle of the statement on what you did in the MPhil.

The document has different names. A US program asks for a statement of purpose (SOP). A UK university may ask for a research proposal (Manchester) or a personal statement plus a research statement (Imperial EEE). Whatever the name, do not treat the MPhil as a second master's and fill the page with coursework and "passion". A PhD reader wants the opposite: one research question you have already worked on, what you decided, and what you could not answer. If your draft is ready, use our PhD SOP review and choose the general PhD statement of purpose rubric, which reads how your prior work prepared you for the research you propose.

Every university and HEC page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Entry rules change between intakes, so recheck each university's Pakistan page before you apply.

Manchester's PhD wording, in full: "Students who have completed a minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree plus a two-year master’s degree, both from reputable HEC-recognised universities and with a minimum overall score of 70-85%, are considered for PhDs." The same page adds: "We strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or academic school before submitting a formal application. A research proposal is required along with your formal application."

HEC's Phase-III PhD criterion reads: "Candidates must have a minimum of Eighteen years of education (MS/MPhil, or equivalent)." The Phase-III application window closed on August 28, 2026 ("Last Date to apply 28-August-2026 1600 hrs"), and the page shows no later round.

Is your MPhil a second master's or a research degree?

Our view: present the MPhil as research training, not as another taught degree. Basis: both Manchester's PhD route and HEC's PhD scholarship treat the 18-year master's level as the point of entry to doctoral study. A statement that lists MPhil courses wastes the one stage where you already did independent research. The countercase: if your MPhil thesis was short, in another field, or mainly a literature review, it is weaker evidence. Lead instead with whatever research you did most independently, such as a funded project, a lab job or a long BS project, and give the MPhil one sentence.

What is published: the entry routes in the table. What is our recommendation: the statement structure below. What is unknown: how any committee weighs a Pakistani MPhil against a two-year US master's. No page we checked says.

Build the statement on your MPhil thesis

Write the thesis paragraph in five moves:

  1. The question. One sentence, specific enough that a reader could disagree with your approach.
  2. Your decisions. Which method, sample, site or model you chose, and why. Use "I" for what you did.
  3. One result. Give the finding plainly, with its size or direction if you have one.
  4. The limit. What your data could not answer.
  5. The next question. The limit becomes the PhD question. This is the sentence that connects your past to the program.

For a statement of about 1,000 words, our budget is: opening and research direction, 100 words; the MPhil thesis, 350–400; other research or work, 200; fit with named people or groups, 200; close, 100. Our page on turning a thesis abstract into SOP evidence covers the rewrite from abstract to paragraph in more detail.

Two-year BA or BSc plus a master's (16 years)

If your route is a two-year bachelor's plus a two-year master's, you have 16 years, and you may still have an MPhil on top. Manchester's PhD rule names the four-year bachelor's. For its taught master's courses, it says that students holding a "two-year bachelor's degree plus a two-year master's degree or a three-year bachelor's degree plus a one-year master's degree should contact the International Office for further advice."

So check before you write. Email the International Office or the admissions team with your exact degree list and durations, and keep the answer. If a university says your route does not meet its PhD entry rule, a one-year UK research master's is the honest bridge. Our comparison of a UK MSc or MRes as PhD preparation covers which one builds the evidence a PhD reader needs. For UK master's entry lines by university, see Pakistan CGPA for a UK master's.

Our view: in the SOP, state the route once and neutrally ("I completed a two-year BSc, a two-year MSc and an MPhil, all at HEC-recognised universities"), then move on. Arguing equivalence in the statement reads as defensive, and the form already holds the facts. The countercase: if the International Office or the admissions team tells you in writing to explain your route, do it where they say, in the words they use.

Grades: divisions, percentages and CGPA

Pakistani transcripts may use annual-system divisions, percentages or semester CGPA, sometimes all three across one education. HEC's own scholarship rule shows both systems side by side: "minimum CGPA 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or first division (in the annual system)."

Report each grade on the scale the transcript uses. Berkeley EECS says it directly: "If you attended a university that does not use the 4.0 GPA scale, please do not try to convert your grades to the 4.0 scale for the application." Our guide on whether to convert foreign grades to a US GPA covers other programs' rules.

The SOP gets at most one context line about grades, and only if a reader could misread them. Our page on explaining strict grading or an unknown university shows how to write that line without pleading.

Constructed example: the MPhil thesis paragraph

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Sana Iqbal, MPhil in environmental chemistry from a Punjab university, applying to UK and US PhDs in water quality.

Weak version (46 words):

During my MPhil I studied many advanced courses such as Environmental Chemistry, Analytical Techniques and Research Methodology, and completed my thesis on heavy metals in groundwater with distinction. This experience increased my passion for research and I want to continue my studies at your prestigious university.

Revised version (146 words):

My MPhil thesis asked whether arsenic levels in shallow hand-pump wells in two Punjab districts tracked well depth or distance from irrigation canals. I chose the sampling design: 60 wells, stratified by depth, sampled before and after the monsoon. I ran the analysis myself after two weeks of training on the department's spectrometer. In my data, depth explained more of the variation than canal distance, but the post-monsoon samples broke that pattern in one district, and my design could not tell whether recharge or a sampling artefact caused it. I could not answer that question with one season of data and no isotope measurements. That is the question I want to pursue in a PhD: how seasonal recharge changes arsenic mobilisation in shallow aquifers. That is why I am applying to groups that combine field sampling with isotope tracing, such as the department's groundwater geochemistry lab.

Why the revision works: it follows the five moves, uses "I" for each decision, states one result and its limit, and turns the limit into the PhD question. The course list is gone because the transcript already shows it. "Prestigious university" is gone because it says nothing about the research.

What changes between a US SOP and a UK application

The thesis paragraph above can travel. The documents around it differ:

  • US: one statement of purpose answers why this program, what research, and what preparation. The thesis paragraph sits in the middle.
  • UK: Manchester requires a research proposal with the formal application, and Imperial EEE asks for a 1–2 page personal statement plus a 2–3 page research statement. The thesis goes in the personal statement as preparation; the proposal is about the future project, not your past.

If you are applying in several countries at once, our guide to one PhD SOP for multiple countries shows what to keep and what to rewrite. If a UK supervisor asks for a short proposal before you apply, see our two-page research proposal for a supervisor email.

Questions from Pakistani PhD applicants

Should I write "18 years of education" in my SOP?

No. Write the degrees and let the form carry the count. "18 years of education" is HEC's eligibility language, and a foreign reader learns more from "a four-year BS and a two-year MPhil".

Should I mention that my journal is HEC-recognised?

No, not in a statement for a program abroad. See our guide on a predatory or weak-journal paper in a PhD application for how to list and describe papers.

Should my SOP mention my CGPA?

Only if it adds context the transcript cannot. Our page on whether to mention CGPA, GRE or rank in the SOP covers the cases.

I teach at a Pakistani university. Does that change the statement?

Yes. Teaching and any study-leave or bond terms change what the statement must explain. See the PhD SOP for lecturers and assistant professors, and if a government or university sponsor is funding you, the guide to a sponsored PhD SOP.

Do I need to contact a supervisor first?

For a UK PhD, it is strongly recommended at Manchester, as quoted above. For a US PhD, the department's own admissions page says whether faculty contact matters. Our guide on contacting a PhD supervisor covers both routes. If your UK offer needs ATAS, see the ATAS research statement for a UK PhD before you apply for the visa.

Get a free Quick Review of your statement of purpose against GradPilot's general PhD statement of purpose rubric. It reads whether your statement presents a clear research direction, shows how your prior work prepared you for it, and explains why the program and faculty fit. For a UK application, the PhD research proposal rubric reads your proposal for a clear question, literature, methods, timeline and fit with the department.
