PhD SOP After Working as a Lecturer
PhD SOP for lecturers and assistant professors: turn teaching years into research evidence, and state study leave and any return bond in one sentence.
PhD SOP After Working as a Lecturer
If you are a lecturer or assistant professor applying for a PhD, your teaching years are not research evidence by themselves. Sweden puts this in law: professional experience "may not give the applicant priority" in doctoral selection. Your statement of purpose has to pull the research out of the teaching job, and state your study leave and any return obligation in one factual sentence.
This page is for faculty members at universities in Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Bangladesh and elsewhere who already teach the subject and now need the doctorate. You are not a fresh graduate, and your problems are different: a rank, a leave letter, a sponsor, sometimes a bond, and years of work that a committee may not count. When you have a draft, start a free review from the PhD page and choose the general PhD statement of purpose rubric.

What committees read in a lecturer's application
The reader has one question: can this person do full-time research and finish? Years of teaching answer a different question.
Sweden's Higher Education Ordinance, as published in English by the Swedish Council for Higher Education, sets the selection rule for doctoral programs in Chapter 7, Section 41:
"Selection between applicants who meet the requirements stated in Sections 35 and 36 must consider their ability to assimilate the course or study programme."
"However, during selection, the fact that an applicant is assessed as able to transfer credits from prior courses and study programmes or for professional or vocational experience may not give the applicant priority over other applicants."
That is one country's rule, not a global one. Our view: write for that test wherever you apply, because a PhD is a research degree and the job is mostly research. The Sweden PhD cover letter guide covers how Swedish ads apply it.
The job itself confirms it. A Lund University doctoral vacancy we checked, in Risk and Safety of heterogeneous swarm systems, caps "teaching and other departmental work (however, a maximum of 20% of working hours)". The PhD is mostly research. Your statement should be too.
| Counts as research evidence | Does not count by itself |
|---|---|
| Your own thesis, with your question and result | Courses taught, by name and number |
| Student projects you supervised, with your methodological role | Years of service and rank |
| Papers, with your contribution stated | Administrative roles (exam duty, timetabling, committees) |
| A lab or course change you tested with data | Student feedback scores |
| A grant or internal project you ran | "Experience" with no question attached |
Our view: the right-hand column is not worthless. It belongs in the CV, and one sentence of it can support a teaching-duties line. It cannot carry the statement.
The countercase: professional doctorates (EdD, DBA) read practice differently, and some ask you to build the case on your teaching. If that is your degree, use the professional doctorate statement rubric instead of this page's advice.
Turning teaching into research paragraphs
Look for the research acts inside the teaching job. You may not have called them research. Three conversions, each with a weak line and a revised one.
Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant statements.
1. A lab you redesigned.
Weak: I taught the soil mechanics laboratory for four years and improved it.
Revised: In 2023 I replaced the lab's fixed-load consolidation test with a staged test, recorded 64 student test runs, and found that results from wet-season samples varied twice as much as dry-season ones. That variation is the question I want to study.
2. Student theses you supervised.
Weak: I supervised many final-year projects.
Revised: I co-supervised six final-year projects on recycled aggregate. I designed the shared test protocol and checked every dataset. Two projects found the same strength loss after freeze-thaw cycles, which no group in our department had measured before.
3. A teaching problem that became a study.
Weak: I am passionate about improving engineering education.
Revised: I noticed that students who failed the first quiz rarely passed the course. I matched quiz and final grades for three cohorts (212 students) and wrote it up as an internal report. It taught me to design a comparison, which is the skill my PhD proposal needs.
The revised lines name a question, your own action and a result. This is what the general PhD statement of purpose rubric looks for in research experience.
Do not open with "I need a PhD for promotion." It may be true. It tells the committee why your employer wants the degree, not why you want the research. Put your career goal at the end, tied to the research. The same rule for teaching evidence at master's level is in teaching experience in your master's SOP.
Study leave, NOC and a return bond: one sentence, stated once
If your university or a government sponsors you, there will be paperwork: leave approval, a no-objection certificate, sometimes a bond to return. The committee needs to know three things: who pays, for how long, and what you owe afterwards. It does not need the paperwork's history.
The obligations are real and written down. Three examples:
- Pakistan, HEC Faculty Development Program. The HEC FDP page says it supports "non-PhD serving faculty members of HEC recognized universities/DAIs having master degree with minimum 18 years of education and age limit of maximum 45 years". It is a split program: the scholar starts in Pakistan and goes abroad "for a maximum period up to 12 months".
- Pakistan, HEC Overseas Scholarship Phase-III. The HEC OSS Phase-III page says "Employees of any Public Sector University/Colleges/R&D / Government / Semi Government Organizations must submit NOC to apply for the scholarship from their organization", sets a maximum PhD age of "40 years' age" for those employees, and links a "Template - Deed of Agreement & Surety Bond".
- Turkey, Law 1416. Article 21 of Law 1416 says those sent abroad under it for compulsory service ("mecburi hizmet karşılığı yurt dışına gönderilenler") are appointed after their studies to the institutions that sent them, to fulfil that service. Article 19 makes those who do not return repay their study costs with interest. (Our translation of the Turkish text.)
For how a sponsorship sentence reads in a statement of purpose, see the guide to government-sponsored PhD statements. For lecturers, our recommendation is one sentence in the funding or goals paragraph, never the opening.
Constructed sentence templates
Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant statements. Fill in the brackets with your own facts.
Fully sponsored: "My PhD will be funded by [full sponsor name] for [number] years; I am on study leave from my post as Lecturer at [full university name], and I will return to that post after the degree."
Leave without funding: "My university has approved [number] years of unpaid study leave, so I am applying for funded positions only."
Split program: "Under [program name], I will spend up to 12 months at [host university] and complete the degree at [home university]; I am asking to join your group for that period."
Each one answers who pays, for how long, and what you owe. None of them defends the bond or thanks the sponsor at length.
When the return obligation matters beyond the SOP
A return bond can also matter outside the statement, in research-security checks. Do not hide it. Check where it is read.
- Canada. The federal Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern applies to federal grants in sensitive technology areas. It says "Individuals are considered affiliated to any organization at which they are employed, appointed, or conduct research", and "Only currently held affiliations are of concern for this policy". Its example: a student who "maintains no formal obligation to return to being affiliated with the listed institution" is not currently affiliated. A lecturer on study leave is still employed. If your university is on Canada's list of Named Research Organizations, raise it with the prospective supervisor before you apply.
- The UK. The ATAS form asks for "details of previous and current employment" and "details of how you will be financially sponsored within the UK", with full names. The ATAS research statement guide covers what to write there.
Our view: the safe sentence is the true one, stated the same way in every document. If your institution may be on a restricted list, the guide to sanctions and PhD application letters covers what to do.
The head of department's letter
Your head of department may write one of your references. That letter can add what your statement cannot: what the writer saw you do as a researcher, and confirmation that your leave is approved. It should not repeat the leave sanction letter or list your duties.
Constructed example, written by us, not a real recommendation letter.
"Ms. Hassan has taught our soil mechanics laboratory since 2022. In 2023 she proposed and ran a comparison of two consolidation test methods using student data, and she wrote the analysis herself. I have read it, and it is the most careful piece of data work from a junior member of staff in my department in the last five years. The university has approved her study leave for the full length of the PhD."
The comparison is with the writer's own department, which the writer can know. A recommender who writes the letter can check it with the international academic recommendation letter rubric.
Constructed example: a lecturer's research paragraph and leave sentence
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Mariam Hassan is an assistant lecturer in civil engineering at a public university in Egypt. She holds a master's degree. She is applying for a geotechnical PhD in the UK. The excerpt is 222 words.
For four years I have taught the soil mechanics laboratory at [full university name]. In 2023 I replaced its fixed-load consolidation test with a staged test so that students could see settlement develop. I recorded 64 student runs over two years and found that samples taken in the wet season varied about twice as much as dry-season samples from the same site. I could not explain this with the lab's equipment, and I could not find a published study of it for the clay we use.
That is the question I want to study: how seasonal moisture changes the consolidation of the soft clay under new housing near our campus. Dr. [name]'s work on unsaturated soil behavior is the closest to it that I have found, and her group's suction-controlled testing is the method I lack. I have used standard oedometers for four years; I have never controlled suction, and I would need that training first.
My master's thesis tested recycled aggregate in road bases. It gave me the habit I rely on now: plan the comparison before collecting data.
My PhD will be funded by [full sponsor name] for three years. I am on study leave from my post as Assistant Lecturer, and I will return to it after the degree to set up a soil testing program in my department.
Why it works: the opening is a research problem from the teaching job, not the job itself. It names one gap honestly. The leave and return obligation take one sentence at the end, and the career goal matches the bond.
A Turkish research assistant sent abroad under Law 1416 would change only the last paragraph: "My PhD is funded under Law 1416, with a compulsory service obligation to [full university name]. I will return to that post after the degree."
Questions from lecturers applying for a PhD
Is my age a problem for a PhD?
Some sponsors set age limits, as HEC does above. None of the university pages quoted here sets one. The guide to returning to grad school at 35 or 40 covers how to write the statement without apologizing for your age.
Should I mention my salary or my rank?
State your rank once, because it explains your role in the work you describe. Leave out salary. It does not tell the committee anything about your research.
Can I keep teaching part-time during the PhD?
That depends on the doctoral contract, your visa and your sponsor, so check all three. Some PhD positions include teaching: the Lund vacancy above allows up to 20% of working hours. Do not promise to keep your home post running from abroad.
Does my university's NOC go in the application?
Only if the application asks for it. Mention the leave in one sentence in the statement, and attach the document where the portal asks for supporting documents. For how funding fits the rest of the statement, see what PhD statements of purpose miss about funding. If some of your papers appeared in venues you would not choose today, see how to handle a predatory-journal paper in a PhD application.
