Predicted Grades for US Colleges: Indian Boards
Your school, not the board, writes Class 12 predicted marks for US colleges: how they are sent, the mid-year report, and what follows board results.
Predicted Grades for US Colleges: Indian Boards
US colleges read your Class X board results, your Class 9–11 school marks, and a predicted Class XII result that your school writes. Your actual Class XII board marks arrive after you apply, and colleges such as Georgia Tech and Northeastern then ask for them before you enrol.
Our view: for a CBSE or ISC student, the Class XII number a US college reads in December is written by your school, not by the board. That makes the conversation with your principal at the start of Class 12 more important than your first pre-board. Ask early, ask in writing, and agree on what the school will send. If you need to explain how your school predicts, the Additional Information section is where one short factual line goes.
Every college page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. Most do not state a cycle year, so recheck them before your school sends anything.
What colleges ask for from Indian board students
Five colleges, five ways of saying it.
| College | At application | To enrol |
|---|---|---|
| Georgia Tech | "Class X board results and XI internal marks"; "Predicted XII board results are strongly recommended" | "XII Board Results" |
| Northeastern | Grades 9, 10 and 11 from your school, your "Indian Standard X board exam results" certificate, and predicted or final Standard XII results, which it "highly recommends" | Final exam results from "all enrolling students" |
| Purdue | "Marksheet for internal grades from years 9 to 11" and a "Copy of the Standard X certificate issued by the exam board" | "Proof of high school graduation and/or a high school diploma prior to enrolling" |
| USC | "Send external examination results and/or predictions", with "Indian board examinations" named as an example | Not stated on the page we read |
| Princeton | Internal grades and "national leaving exams such as Std X/Std XII in India"; ask your school "to submit predicted or achieved results as they become available" | Not stated on the page we read |
Three things in that table matter for your plan:
- Predicted Class XII marks are asked for, but not as a hard requirement. Georgia Tech, Northeastern and Princeton recommend them. USC asks for results "and/or predictions". Purdue's India list does not mention them. No college here says it will not review an application without them.
- Nobody asks you to convert to a GPA. Princeton says: "We also do not expect you or your school to provide a conversion or grade-point average (GPA) if this is not a standard practice provided by your school or education system." The CBSE marks guide covers how to enter percentages.
- The board result is an enrolment document. Georgia Tech lists it under "Credentials Needed to Enroll", not under what you need to apply.
Who writes the prediction, and how it reaches colleges
Your school does. Not you, not a parent, not a consultant.
Northeastern is the bluntest: "Any transcripts sent by you, your family or an independent educational consultant will not be accepted." It says predicted results "should be submitted with the High School Transcript, Secondary School Report, or Counselor Recommendation; or submitted by a designated school official from a verifiable school email address, using either Northeastern's Predicted Grades Request Form or your high school's own predicted grades statement."
Princeton's checklist says the same thing for the transcript: "An official transcript must be sent by a school counselor or school official." Its School Report line is: "Please ask your school counselor or other school official to complete and submit the SR form."
In practice, that means the person your school names as your Common App counselor uploads the predicted marks with the transcript or School Report. Many Indian schools have no college counselor. That is fine: the no-counselor guide for Indian schools covers who can take the role.
What we could not verify: we found no CBSE rule on predicted marks for foreign universities among the notices on CBSE's homepage, checked on October 30, 2026, and we did not check CISCE. Do not tell a principal "the board allows" or "the board forbids" predictions. Ask what the school's own practice is.
Mid-year report when your school has pre-boards, not semesters
The mid-year report is a school form, sent after your first set of Class 12 marks. Princeton asks your counselor to submit it "when your midyear grades are available". Stanford lists "Midyear transcript (due by February 15)". Common App's 2026–27 update deck adds one change: "Counselors will have a text box option to provide written updates on the Mid-year report. This can be in place of or in addition to a document upload."
If your school runs unit tests, a half-yearly exam and pre-boards instead of semesters, which of those counts as "mid-year" is the school's call, because the school signs the form.
Our recommendation: ask the school to send the most recent full set of Class 12 school marks it has when the form is due, labelled with the exam's name (half-yearly, first pre-board). If your school marks its pre-boards harder than it expects the board to mark, the new text box lets the counselor say so in two lines. The sibling page on mid-year grades that dropped covers that note.
The countercase: if you apply Early Decision or Early Action and are admitted in December, the mid-year report may arrive after your decision. Send it anyway if the college asks; admission offers carry conditions, as the next section shows.
After admission: final board results
Your offer is not the end of the paperwork.
- Georgia Tech lists "XII Board Results" as a credential "Needed to Enroll".
- Northeastern says "all enrolling students will be required to submit final exam results, even students who applied 'test-optional' to Northeastern, as final exams also serve as proof of high school graduation." Its final-transcript deadline is June 30, and "If your high school operates on a different schedule, you will be granted an extension and not penalized for the late arrival of your graduation certificate or final academic records."
- Purdue requires "Proof of high school graduation and/or a high school diploma prior to enrolling at Purdue". For Indian applicants who have already graduated, its India list asks for an "Attested copy of the Standard X certificate" and an "Attested copy of the Standard XII certificate issued by the exam board".
Can a weaker board result cost you the offer? Northeastern states its position: "If your final test scores are not within an acceptable range of your predicted results, Northeastern reserves the right to rescind any offers of admission." It does not define "acceptable range". The other colleges in our table do not say anything about it on the pages we read, and we found no published rate of rescinded offers. Read the conditions in your own offer letter; they are the rule that applies to you. The board results after US admission guide covers the final report step by step.
IB students in India
If your school runs the IB Diploma instead of CBSE or ISC, the prediction still comes from your school, not from the exam board. Georgia Tech says: "Predicted IB scores are strongly recommended" and "There is no minimum IB score needed to apply, but to be competitive, students should have mostly scores of 6 and 7." The sibling page on predicted grades for A-levels and IB covers that system in full.
Constructed example: one Additional Information line about predictions
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): a CBSE student whose school predicts from the first pre-board, which it marks harder than the board exam. The student explains it in the Additional Information section in 53 words:
My school's predicted Class XII marks are based on our first pre-board exam in November, as the school's cover note says. Our pre-boards are set from the full syllabus six weeks before the syllabus is finished. My Class X board result (94.2%) and Class XI school marks are on my transcript for comparison.
Why it works: it states one fact the reader could not otherwise know (what the prediction is based on), points to evidence already in the file, and stops. It does not argue for a higher number or complain about the school. The student does not have to write it at all if the counselor's note already says the same thing.
What to ask your principal in September
Take this list to the meeting, and ask for the answers in an email you can keep:
For the whole Class 11 and 12 calendar in IST, see the US application timeline for Indian students.
- Will the school issue predicted Class XII marks for US colleges? On what basis: Class XI finals, unit tests, the first pre-board?
- Who will sign them, and from which school email address?
- Will they go with the transcript or School Report in the Common App, or by a college's own form (Northeastern has one)?
- By what date? Match it to your earliest deadline, and leave the school a week of margin.
- Will the school send a mid-year report after the half-yearly or pre-board, and by Stanford's February 15 if you apply there?
- Will the school send final Class XII results, attested if a college like Purdue asks for that, after the board declares them?
- Who is the backup if that person is away in March?
If the school says no to predictions, do not write your own. Apply with Class X results and Class 9–11 marks, which every college in our table asks for, and add one Additional Information line saying the school does not issue predictions.
Questions about predicted grades from Indian boards
Are predicted grades required for US universities from India?
None of the five colleges we checked calls them required. Georgia Tech "strongly" recommends them, Northeastern "highly recommends" them, Princeton asks for them "as they become available", USC asks for results "and/or predictions", and Purdue's India list does not mention them.
Can I self-report predicted marks in the Common App?
You enter your own coursework and grades in the Education section, but the prediction itself has to come from the school. Northeastern will not accept transcripts "sent by you, your family or an independent educational consultant".
What if my predicted marks are higher than my board result?
Northeastern reserves the right to rescind an offer if final results are not "within an acceptable range" of the predictions. Other colleges in our table do not publish a rule. Your offer letter's conditions are the rule that applies.
Do US colleges need my Class XII marksheet?
Yes, if you enrol. Georgia Tech and Northeastern say so directly. Purdue requires proof of graduation before you enrol, and asks applicants who have already graduated for an attested Class XII certificate.
