Board Results After US Admission: Final Report Guide
CBSE, IB and A-level results arrive after US decisions. What Harvard, MIT, Princeton and BU expect, how the final report works, and the note to attach.
Board Results After US Admission: Final Report Guide
US colleges expect your board results to arrive after you are admitted. Harvard wants the Final School Report "no later than July 1", expects IB results "as soon as they are released in mid-July" and final A levels "by mid-August". Your school sends them, through the Common App final report, to the one college you will attend.
So lateness is not the problem. The problem is a gap between the predicted marks a college admitted you on and the marks you achieved, arriving with no explanation. Our position on this page: when achieved marks fall clearly below predictions, the counselor's attached explanation is the document that matters most, and it should go with the final report, not after a college asks. This page gives the colleges' own words, the result calendar against US dates, the final report form question by question, and a note your counselor can adapt.
Every college page and form quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. The college pages state no cycle year. The final report form we quote is Common App's 2025–26 print version; we did not find a 2026–27 version online, so your counselor should read the live form in the recommender system.
What colleges say about late external results
| College | Their words |
|---|---|
| Harvard | "IB students should send their final results as soon as they are released in mid-July. We will expect to see final A levels results by mid-August." |
| MIT | "We understand that many grades are not available until after decisions are made and ask that predicted grades be sent if available. Only admitted students are required to send final grades, and we understand that they will not be available until the summer months." |
| Princeton | "We understand that results from external exams may come in after our Final Report deadline. As such, we ask your school to submit them as they become available." |
| Boston University | For "examination-based curricula (IB, GCE, CBSE/ISC, for example), predicted results are also required." |
| Penn | "if your final exam scores are not yet available, please have your school provide us with predicted scores to use in our review of your academic records." |
| USC | "Send external examination results and/or predictions. Examples include GCSE/IGCSE, predicted IB or A-levels, Indian board examinations, Australian ATAR, etc." |
| Columbia | External exam results "must be submitted if they are required to complete and graduate from secondary school. If they are not required … you are not required to submit results." |
Read together, these say three things:
- Predictions decide the admission; results confirm it. BU and Penn ask for predicted results up front. MIT says plainly that final grades come "after decisions are made".
- The school sends results, not you. Princeton asks "your school to submit them". Harvard's Final School Report must be "completed and sent by a school counselor or other school official".
- Columbia's rule is narrower than the others. If your board exam is not required to graduate, Columbia does not require the result.
The calendar: board results against US dates
This table lines up what we could verify. Your school's own dates come first.
| Event | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard Restrictive Early Action / Regular Decision deadlines | November 1 / January 1 | Harvard requirements page |
| Harvard Final School Report | "no later than July 1" | Harvard requirements page |
| IB final results | "mid-July", in Harvard's words | Harvard requirements page |
| A-level final results | "by mid-August", in Harvard's words | Harvard requirements page |
| CBSE Class XII re-evaluation outcomes, 2026 | Release began June 21, 2026 | CBSE homepage press release list |
| CBSE Class XII supplementary results, 2026 | Declared August 12, 2026 | CBSE homepage press release list |
What the table shows: an IB or A-level student cannot meet a July 1 final-report date with final results, and Harvard says so itself by giving later dates. A CBSE student's marks may also change after the first result, through re-evaluation in June or a supplementary exam in July and August. If a mark is under re-evaluation or a supplementary exam is booked, the counselor should say so in the note rather than wait.
What we could not verify: the IB and JCQ (the UK exam boards' body) results pages returned HTTP 403 to our checks on October 30, 2026, and we did not find the 2026 CBSE main Class XII result press release on CBSE's homepage list. We did not check WAEC. Use your board's own published date. For US decision dates, see early decision and early action notification dates for 2026–27.
Predicted grades: who sends them and how
Before admission, your school sends predicted grades with the School Report, then updates them in the mid-year report. Princeton describes the midyear report as including "new internal or predicted grades after the first semester or trimester of your final year". Harvard says IB and A-level schools send predicted grades "based on your current classroom work and the results of any internal or mock exams you have taken up to that point".
If predictions change outside those reports, the counselor uses Common App's optional report. The 2025–26 form says it "is not a substitute for the mid-year or final report" and lists "Updated transcript or predicted grades" as one of the updates it carries.
Two siblings cover the prediction stage in detail: predicted grades on the Common App for A-levels and IB, and predicted grades from Indian boards. This page starts where they end: the offer is in hand.
The final report, step by step
The Common App final report's counselor section says:
"The final report delivers your student's final transcripts and grades. Only submit this report to a college where your student intends to enroll. The college should have either accepted or waitlisted your student."
It asks the counselor to attach "the student's official transcript and transcript legend", updates class rank and GPA if the school reports them, and asks three yes/no questions:
| Question on the form | When the answer needs an attachment |
|---|---|
| "Did or will the student graduate as anticipated this year?" | The form gives no explanation box here. A "No" needs a note anyway |
| "Have there been any changes to the senior year courses sent with the original school report?" | "If you answer yes, please attach an explanation." |
| "Do you wish to update your original evaluation of this applicant?" | "If you answer yes, please attach an explanation." |
Common App's 2026–27 update deck adds that "Profile information can be updated for all students prior to completing final reports", naming class rank, GPA and "Transcript (most recent grades included)".
Here is the order we recommend for an international school:
- By the college's date (July 1 at Harvard), send the final report with the final school transcript and legend, even if board results are not out. Say in a one-line note when board results are expected.
- When results are released, send them as Princeton asks, "as they become available". If the college has a portal upload or a stated route, use it. The optional report also carries an updated transcript.
- If achieved marks fall clearly below predictions, answer "Yes" to updating the evaluation and attach the explanation below. The form gives that question an explanation slot, and it is the only one that lets the counselor comment on the student rather than on courses.
- If a mark is under re-evaluation or a resit is booked, say so, with the expected date.
Can lower board marks cost the offer?
The rule you signed is in Common App's first-year application (the PDF marked © 2026, which names no cycle year; we read it as the 2026–27 version): "I understand that all offers of admission are conditional, pending receipt of final transcripts showing work comparable in quality to that upon which the offer was based, as well as honorable dismissal from the school." No college we checked defines "comparable in quality" for board results, and none publishes a marks threshold. For college-by-college wording on senior-year declines, see whether colleges can rescind admission for senior grades.
Harvard's separate warning is about accuracy, not marks: "If you have already been admitted, your offer will typically be withdrawn" when a misrepresentation is found. The practical risk for an international student is self-reported marks. If you typed predicted marks into a field as if they were final results, the final transcript will show the difference.
Our view, not any college's published rule: three things decide how a gap reads.
- Size against the prediction. One grade lower in one subject is a different event from every subject dropping.
- Relevance to the major. A drop in mathematics for an admitted engineering student matters more than a drop in an elective.
- Whether it is explained. A gap with a stated cause, such as illness during the exam period, reads differently from a gap with no context.
The countercase: if the gap is small (within one grade, one subject) and the school's predictions are known to be generous, a long explanation draws attention to nothing. A one-line note, or none, fits.
Unknown: no college we checked publishes how often it withdraws offers for board results.
The explanation note
Constructed example: a counselor note on a predicted-versus-achieved gap
Constructed example, written by us, not a real school's document. Context (invented): an A-level student admitted to a US college was predicted A in Mathematics and achieved C. The note body, from "Daniel was predicted" to "unchanged", is 91 words.
Re: Daniel Okafor, CAID 00000000 — A-level results, August 2027
Daniel was predicted A in Mathematics and achieved C. His other two subjects matched prediction (A, A). Daniel was admitted to hospital for four days during the exam period and sat Paper 2 two days after discharge. The school has requested a review of the Mathematics mark through the exam board, and we expect the outcome in September. Our predictions in Mathematics have matched or come within one grade of achieved results for most of our students. I have known Daniel for three years and my evaluation of him is unchanged.
Ms. R. Adeyemi, Head of Sixth Form
Why it works: it states the predicted and achieved grade side by side, so nobody has to compare documents. It gives one verifiable cause, says what is pending and when, and puts the school's prediction record behind the number. It does not plead. The sentence about the school's prediction record must be true for your school; leave it out if you cannot stand behind it.
When the student writes too: a short email from the student to the admissions office is reasonable after the counselor's note is sent, saying the same facts in two or three sentences. It does not replace the school's note.
Before you send: a counselor checklist
- Final report submitted only to the college the student will attend.
- Transcript and transcript legend attached.
- Board result sent, or a dated line saying when it will be.
- Predicted and achieved marks stated side by side for any subject that dropped.
- The question on updating the original evaluation answered "Yes" if a note is attached.
- Any re-evaluation or resit named, with its expected date.
- Nothing sent by the student or family in place of the school.
Questions about board results after admission
Do US colleges need my board results if I am already admitted?
Yes, at the colleges we checked. MIT says "Only admitted students are required to send final grades." Columbia requires external results if they are needed to graduate.
My board results come out after the July 1 deadline. Is that a problem?
Not at Harvard, which gives mid-July for IB and mid-August for A levels, or at Princeton, which asks schools to submit results "as they become available".
Can my admission be cancelled because my board marks were lower than predicted?
Every Common App offer is conditional on work "comparable in quality". None of the colleges we checked publishes a threshold, so the size of the gap and its explanation matter.
Who sends the board results, me or my school?
Your school. Princeton asks "your school to submit them", and Harvard's final report must come from "a school counselor or other school official". If a board result needs a resit, see explaining a failed exam.
The counselor's US application calendar shows where final reports and results fall in the year.
