Psychology Master's Statement of Intent in Canada
Psychology MSc statement of intent in Canada: Queen's caps it at 4,000 characters, Calgary at 500 words plus a one-page proposal. A constructed sample.
Psychology Master's Statement of Intent in Canada
A thesis psychology master's statement in Canada is short and form-bound: Queen's caps its Statement of Interest at 4,000 characters including spaces, and Calgary caps its Statement of Intent at 500 words, with the project itself in a separate one-page research proposal.
Our view: in Canada this statement is a two-year project pitch to one supervisor, not a letter about loving psychology. Queen's says the statement helps it decide "which potential supervisor would best guide your studies", and an application no faculty member takes is marked "withdrawn, no supervisor available". If you are drafting now, open the free master's statement of purpose review and choose GradPilot's general master's statement of purpose rubric.
Every Queen's and University of Calgary page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Queen's says its application "has opened for Fall 2027 admission"; neither page dates its limits, so recheck both before you submit. How Canadian psychology departments admit
The two departments below admit to a thesis degree that is built to lead into a PhD, and they say so.
Queen's Psychology describes the path this way: "The MSc program is designed as a 2-year MSc thesis-based degree, and many students transition from this program directly into our 4-year thesis-based PhD program, resulting in a 6-year commitment to the program." It then adds the condition admission rests on: "it is also necessary that one of our faculty must be willing to supervise the student for the duration of their degree."
The decision runs through supervisors. Queen's says that after the deadline "all graduate supervisors review all submitted applications and make recommendations to the Psychology Graduate Committee". It lists three reasons for refusal: supervisors already full, stronger competition, and "The research interests as expressed by the student did not fit with the research plans of the potential supervisor." It also publishes its own scale: "We receive over 300 applications each year and send out around 10-20 offers, MSc and PhD combined."
Calgary's Psychology MSc (thesis) runs two years full time in three areas (Industrial-Organizational, Social and Theoretical, and Brain and Cognitive Science), and says "A master's degree in psychology will give you the pre-requisite for a PhD." Students "must formally present a thesis proposal within 14 months after admission to the program."
The limits you are writing inside
| Item | Queen's Psychology | Calgary Psychology MSc (thesis) |
|---|---|---|
| Statement | "should not exceed 4000 characters including space" | Statement of Intent "(max. 500 words)" |
| What it covers | educational goals; used to match you to an area and supervisor | "career objectives, research interests, relevant experience and achievements" |
| Separate project document | none listed | one-page Research Proposal, plus one page for references only |
| Other writing | Resume "should not exceed 2000 characters including space" | CV; EDIA statement "(one-page maximum)" |
| Supervisors | rank up to three faculty members | list "a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 3 potential supervisors" |
| Deadline (as published) | December 1, including reference letters | November 15 for September 1 admission |
Queen's statement is typed into an online form, and the page is blunt about it: "The character limit of each material mentioned below is the character limit of application form and cannot be exceeded." A Word file that fits 4,000 characters can still overflow the box if your editor counts differently, so paste it into the form early.
Calgary's proposal must include "a summary of the project you would like to conduct, it's relevance to the research area of your proposed supervisor(s) and how you plan on carrying out this research when you begin graduate school" (the apostrophe is the page's). That changes the statement: the project detail goes in the proposal, so the 500 words carry your preparation and fit, not a second copy of the method.
Our recommendation: write one evidence set and cut two documents from it. Our 427-word example below runs 2,590 characters with spaces (our arithmetic), so a statement written to Calgary's word cap can also fit Queen's character cap, with room left for Queen's subheadings. Count each version in its own form.
Unknown: neither department publishes how the statement is weighed against grades, references or the proposal.
Check faculty availability before you write
Both departments make supervisor availability your job before you submit. Queen's tells you to "research faculty member profiles associated with the chosen area of interest" and to check who is accepting students on its Faculty Member Availability page. Calgary says to "Ensure that the supervisor(s) you name are either accepting or seeking inquiries for a new student in the upcoming admissions cycle," and that its list "is normally updated in the early fall."
Run this before drafting:
- Open the availability list for the coming year. Strike every name not listed as accepting.
- Read two recent papers from each remaining name. If you cannot say what question their lab is asking now, do not name them.
- Rank no more than the form allows. Three at most at both schools. A third name you cannot justify weakens the first two.
- Write one sentence per name that links their current question to yours. If the sentence would fit any lab, rewrite it or drop the name.
- Email only where the page invites it. Calgary says you "can also connect with potential supervisors directly by email". For the email itself, see how to email a supervisor for a master's in Canada.
The general case for the mentor paragraph is in our psychology master's statement of purpose guide, which covers US programs. What Canada adds is the hard stop: at Queen's, no taker means no admission.
Write it as a two-year plan
Queen's publishes its tips for a strong statement. Two of them change what you write: "be concrete, practical and feasible - sound like you know what you are doing and that you have a reasonable time to do it in - the PSYC master's program is 2 years long and the doctoral program is 4 years long – demonstrate how you plan to complete your proposed study in the relevant time period", and "do not use up space with excessive lists of courses". The page also asks you to "use subheadings" and "write in lay terms, NOT disciplinary jargon".
Our view: the feasibility sentence is the one a passion-led draft leaves out. Name the method you already know, the one you still need, and what a two-year MSc thesis on your question would actually measure.
The countercase: if you are applying straight to a PhD with a thesis master's behind you, Queen's says "be specific (especially for PhD applications)", and the plan should run four years, not two.
Constructed example: 500-word Calgary-style statement
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Ananya Rao finished a four-year BSc in psychology outside Canada with an honours thesis on working memory, and applies to a thesis MSc in a brain and cognitive science area. Supervisor names are placeholders. The text below, including its bold labels, is 427 words, under Calgary's 500, and 2,590 characters with spaces, under Queen's 4,000 (our arithmetic).
Research interests. I want to study why older adults forget where they put things more than younger adults do, and whether the cause is weaker binding of an object to its location rather than weaker memory for the object itself. In an MSc thesis I would test this with a change-detection task that separates object memory from object-location binding.
Relevant experience. My honours thesis at [Undergraduate University] asked a smaller version of this question in students. I adapted a published change-detection paradigm in PsychoPy, ran 48 participants in two sessions, and analysed accuracy with mixed-effects models in R. I wrote the task code and the analysis; my supervisor, Dr. S. Menon, approved the design and the ethics application. The binding condition produced lower accuracy than the object condition, but my sample had no older adults, so I could not test the age question. That gap is why I am applying.
I also spent eight months as a research assistant in [Hospital] memory clinic, scoring standard neuropsychological tests under a licensed psychologist. I did not diagnose or interpret results; I learned how older adults experience long test sessions, which shaped how I would keep my own task under 30 minutes.
Why this program and these supervisors. [Professor A]'s lab studies age-related change in associative memory, and its recent paper on [topic] used a design close to mine. I would like to learn the lab's approach to recruiting older community participants, which I have never done. [Professor B]'s work on eye-tracking in visual memory would let me check whether older adults look at the location less, or look and still fail to bind it. Both are listed as accepting students this cycle.
Plan for two years. In year one I would complete the required methods and statistics courses, pilot the task with younger adults, and present the thesis proposal within the program's 14-month window. In year two I would collect data from older adults, analyse it, and write the thesis. I already know PsychoPy and mixed-effects models. I still need training in eye-tracking and in recruiting older adults ethically, and those are the two things I would learn first.
Career objectives. I plan to continue to a PhD in cognitive aging and to work in research on everyday memory problems in later life. The MSc thesis is the test of whether I can design a study, recruit a hard-to-reach sample and finish on time.
Achievements. My honours thesis received the department's prize for best undergraduate thesis in my year, and I presented it as a poster at [Student Conference].
What it does, line by line against Calgary's list:
- Research interests come first and are a testable question, not "the mind fascinates me".
- Relevant experience states her own share. "I wrote the task code and the analysis" is checkable by a referee. The clinic paragraph says what she did not do.
- Fit names a reason per supervisor, and both names pass step 1 of the availability check.
- The plan answers Queen's feasibility tip inside Calgary's own 14-month proposal rule.
- Career objectives and achievements, the two items easiest to drop, each get a short paragraph.
What it leaves out: a course list, Canada, tuition, family and any story about wanting to help people. None of those is on either page's list.
Clinical programs are a different document
Clinical psychology runs on its own rules. Queen's says "We do not offer a terminal MSc/MA in the Clinical Psychology Program" and lists prerequisite coursework expected of clinical applicants, and its page says admission to the clinical area is more competitive. We did not source clinical statement rules beyond that, so this page does not set them. If clinical is your target, read the clinical psychology PhD statement guide and check the program's own page first.
Questions about the psychology statement of intent in Canada
How long is a psychology master's statement of intent in Canada?
It depends on the department. Queen's caps the Statement of Interest at 4,000 characters including spaces in its online form, and Calgary caps the Statement of Intent at 500 words.
Do I need a supervisor before I apply?
Not a signed agreement at these two departments, but you must name candidates. Calgary says a supervisor "is not required prior to the start of the program" and still asks you to list one to three. Queen's needs a faculty member willing to supervise before it admits you.
Should I name professors who are not accepting students?
No. Calgary tells you to name supervisors who are "accepting or seeking inquiries", and Queen's lists full supervisors as a refusal reason.
Can the same draft go to Queen's and Calgary?
The evidence can; the file cannot. Queen's wants subheadings inside a character-limited form; Calgary wants 500 words with the project moved to a separate one-page proposal.

Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent against GradPilot's general master's statement of purpose rubric. It reads for your academic interests, preparation, goals and reasons for choosing the program, and whether your experience supports your plan. For the research half, the nonclinical psychology statement rubric, written for PhD statements and the closest match to a thesis MSc that feeds one, reads for a bounded research question, your part in the research and why the program fits. For a clinical application, the clinical psychology statement rubric reads whether your clinical purpose stays research-bounded.
