Resume for MS in US: One-Page B.Tech Fresher Format
Resume for MS in US as a B.Tech fresher: one page, no photo or date of birth, CGPA on its 10-point scale, projects first. What 6 US programs ask.
Resume for MS in US: One-Page B.Tech Fresher Format
A B.Tech fresher's resume for an MS in the US should be one page, with no photo, date of birth, objective or declaration, your CGPA exactly as the transcript shows it (for example 8.4/10), and projects given the most space. Of six US programs checked on October 31, 2026, only CMU's INI sets a length: "no longer than two pages".
Indian fresher resume templates are built for campus placement: photo at the top, "Career Objective", father's name, a declaration with your signature. An admissions committee is not hiring you. It reads the resume to check what your statement of purpose (SOP) claims. This page shows what programs ask for, what to delete from an Indian placement template, the order for a fresher, and a full constructed one-page sample.
Every program page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Recheck each program's upload screen before you submit.
What programs ask the resume to cover
| Program | Required? | Length or format rule | What the page adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| CMU School of Computer Science | Yes | None stated; CMU's MSCS page says "Please submit in PDF format." | The list ends with "any other extracurricular activities" |
| CMU Information Networking Institute | Yes | "Upload a resume that is no longer than two pages." | The same section asks for relevant work experience, "including internships and research" |
| UIUC Siebel School | Yes, part of the online form | None stated | Includes "remarkable achievements, publications, organizations, awards, and leadership experiences" |
| Stanford CS MS | Yes | None stated | "Please be sure to list all your publications (if any) here as well." |
| Georgia Tech ECE | "Resume/curriculum vitae (optional)" | None stated | "We do not accept updates to application materials (updated transcripts, resumes, publications, etc.)" |
| USC Viterbi MS | Per program; its review includes "CV or resume" | "There is no standardized format for the résumé/CV." | After submission, updates go in as an "Other document" |
The resume is one of the November tasks in the Fall 2027 MS in USA timeline.
Three things to take from the table:
- Length is almost never set. Only INI caps it, at two pages. A fresher does not need two.
- The content lists are about evidence: education, research, work, publications, awards, leadership. None of the six asks for personal details.
- Some programs will not take a corrected resume. Georgia Tech ECE does not accept updates. Finish the resume before your first deadline, not after.

Placement resume vs admissions resume
Our view: an admissions resume is not a placement resume with a new heading. It is a record of evidence for the claims in your SOP. Every line should be something a committee member could check against your transcript, your letters or your statement.
| Item | Indian placement template | MS admissions resume |
|---|---|---|
| Photo, date of birth, father's name, marital status | Included | Delete |
| "Career Objective" | Top of page | Delete; your SOP does this job |
| Declaration, place, date, signature | Bottom of page | Delete |
| CGPA | Converted to a percentage in some templates | As on the transcript, with its scale: "8.4/10" |
| Class 10 and 12 marks | Full table | One line or none |
| Projects | Two lines each | The largest section: your role, method and result |
| Skills | Long tool list | Only what you used in a listed project |
| Hobbies, languages known | A list | Delete, unless one is real evidence (see below) |
The basis: none of the six program pages asks for personal details, an objective or a declaration, and CMU and UIUC both list exactly what they want instead. For the photo and date-of-birth question in detail, including countries where a CV does carry them, see photo and date of birth on a grad school CV.
The countercase: if a program's own form or instructions ask for something on this delete list, include it. And if a hobby is serious evidence, such as a competitive-programming rating or a maintained open-source project, it is not a hobby. Move it to Projects or Achievements.
CGPA on its own scale
Keep the number the transcript shows, with its scale. Do not convert 8.4/10 to a percentage or a 4.0 GPA on the resume.
The programs' application forms point the same way. Northeastern Khoury tells applicants to "record their GPA as written on the transcript and specify the GPA scale in the designated space on the application" (Khoury FAQ). Stanford CS says: "Do not normalize your GPA to reflect a value relative to the highest achieved aggregate score in your class/batch/year." Those are rules for the form, not the resume, but a resume that shows a different number from the form invites a question you do not want. Our guide to converting foreign grades for US grad school covers why the form wants your own scale.
Section order for a fresher
Our recommendation, top to bottom:
Course certificates go in one resume line; mentioning NPTEL and Coursera courses in an SOP covers when one also earns an SOP sentence.
Your resume lists every internship; how to write about an internship in your MS SOP covers the one that gets a paragraph.
The resume lists the project; how to write about your final-year project in an SOP covers the paragraph that explains it.
- Name and contact. Name, email, phone with country code, city, and a code or portfolio link if it holds the projects below.
- Education. B.Tech, branch, institute, years, CGPA as on the transcript. One line for Class 12 if you want it.
- Projects. Two to four. Each one: title, dates, team size, your role, method, and one result you can defend.
- Internships and work. Organization, dates, and what you did, not the team's mission.
- Publications. Only if you have one. Stanford asks you to list all of them.
- Technical skills. Languages and tools you used in the entries above.
- Achievements and activities. Hackathons, competitive programming, scholarships, one or two leadership roles. Our guides to hackathons and competitive programming in an SOP and extracurriculars in an MS SOP cover which of these also earn space in the statement.
Projects come before internships for most freshers because a final-year project usually has the clearest personal role. If your internship is the stronger technical work, swap them.
One page or two
Our view: one page for a B.Tech fresher. The reason is not a rule, since only INI sets one. It is that a fresher's evidence fits on one page, and a second page of padded skills and certificates hides the projects.
The countercase: two pages are fine if the content is real: a publication, a research assistantship and two internships, for example. INI allows two, and Stanford asks for all publications. Never go past two where a program sets two.

PROJECTS
Hybrid sparse matrix kernel on GPU, Jan 2026–present (team of 2; my design)
- Combined two storage formats by row length; cut time per call from 41 ms to
17 ms on a 2M-row test graph against the course-lab baseline
- Wrote the format-selection logic and the benchmarks; teammate wrote the test harness
Fest registration web app, Aug–Oct 2025 (team of 5; I led)
- Replaced paper registration for the college tech fest; handled 2,300 entries
- Chose a simple queue over a full payment integration to meet the event date
INTERNSHIP
Software Intern, Northgate Logistics (invented), Pune, May–Jul 2025
- Built a loading-schedule tool for the warehouse team in Python; still in use
- Interviewed drivers to time each loading step before writing any code
TECHNICAL SKILLS
C++, CUDA, Python, SQL, Git, Linux
ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Finalist, inter-college hackathon (team of 4), 2025
Overall Coordinator, college technical fest, 2025
NSS volunteer, 2023–2024What carries the weight. Each project says the team size and whose design it was, which is what the SOP will claim. The numbers are tied to a baseline ("against the course-lab baseline"), so a reader can see what improved and from where. The CGPA keeps its scale and says how many semesters it covers. The activities sit at the bottom as single lines, while the fest work that involved building something is a project. There is no photo, date of birth, objective, declaration or signature.
Before you upload: resume checklist
- One page, unless you have real content for a second and the program allows it.
- No photo, date of birth, father's name, marital status, objective or declaration.
- CGPA matches the transcript and the application form, with its scale.
- Every project in your SOP appears here with the same title, dates and role.
- Every number has a baseline or a context.
- Skills listed are skills used in an entry above.
- Saved as a PDF and opened on another device.
- Final before your first deadline, since some programs, such as Georgia Tech ECE, accept no updates.
Questions about an MS resume from India
Should I put a photo on my resume for MS in the US?
No. None of the six program pages asks for one, and CMU and UIUC list what to include without it.
Resume or CV for an MS application?
Follow the label on the upload slot. For a coursework MS, a one-page resume built around projects does the job. Our CV for grad school guide covers the research-first CV for PhD and thesis programs.
Should I convert my CGPA to a 4.0 scale on the resume?
No. Keep 8.4/10 as the transcript shows it. Northeastern Khoury tells applicants to record the GPA as written on the transcript, Stanford says not to normalize it, and the resume should match the form.
Should I include Class 10 and 12 marks?
One line at most. None of the six pages asks for school marks on the resume, and the space is better used on projects.
Should the resume be a PDF or Word file?
PDF. CMU's MSCS page asks for "PDF format", and a PDF keeps your layout fixed. For contest awards, see how to list MCM and other awards with their field size.
