Spanish Grades and Matrícula de Honor for Grad School
Spain grades 0 to 10; Matrícula de Honor is capped at 5% of a subject's students by law. What Bristol, Birmingham and York ask, and how to write MH.
Spanish Grades and Matrícula de Honor for Grad School
Spanish universities grade 0 to 10 with one decimal, and a Matrícula de Honor (MH) may go only to a grade of 9.0 or more, capped at 5% of the students enrolled in a subject. That cap is set by Real Decreto 1125/2003. The UK master's lines we checked start at 7.0/10: Bristol's minimum, and the 2:1 line at Birmingham and York.
Our take: you do not need a conversion to a GPA or a UK class. In Spain the top honor is defined by a national rule with a quota, so a count ("MH in 6 subjects") plus that rule tells a foreign reader more than any adjective. The rest of the statement should be about your work. When your draft is ready, start a graduate SOP review and choose the general MS statement of purpose rubric.
Every BOE, university and Fulbright page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. The UK pages state no admission year, so recheck your own course page before you apply.
The scale in Spanish law
Article 5 of Real Decreto 1125/2003 sets the scale for official university degrees. The BOE's consolidated text shows no amendment since it was published on September 18, 2003.
"0-4,9: Suspenso (SS). 5,0-6,9: Aprobado (AP). 7,0-8,9: Notable (NT). 9,0-10: Sobresaliente (SB)."
On the honor itself, Article 5.6 says:
"La mención de «Matrícula de Honor» podrá ser otorgada a alumnos que hayan obtenido una calificación igual o superior a 9.0. Su número no podrá exceder del cinco por ciento de los alumnos matriculados en una materia en el correspondiente curso académico, salvo que el número de alumnos matriculados sea inferior a 20, en cuyo caso se podrá conceder una sola «Matrícula de Honor»."
In English (our translation): MH "may be awarded" to students with 9.0 or more; their number may not exceed 5% of the students enrolled in a subject that year, and a class under 20 may award one.
Three more rules in the same article matter for an application:
- Your average is credit-weighted. Article 5.3 defines the media as the sum of credits times grades, divided by total credits. A 6-credit course moves it more than a 3-credit one.
- The record is meant to show the distribution. Article 5.2 says grades "se reflejarán en su expediente académico junto con el porcentaje de distribución de estas calificaciones sobre el total de alumnos". Check whether your certificate prints that column. If it does, it is the best calibration you own.
- MH is a "mención", not a band. The decree lists four numeric bands and treats MH as an extra distinction on top of Sobresaliente.
Our arithmetic on the cap: a subject with 60 enrolled students can award at most 3 MH (5% of 60). A subject with 18 can award one.
What UK and US readers publish about Spanish grades
These are the destinations' own pages, not converter sites.
| Reader | What its page says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Bristol | Licenciado, Ingeniero or Arquitecto holders "will be considered for admission to a Masters degree, and in exceptional cases for MPhil or PhD programmes. The minimum grade required is 7.0/10 although some programmes will require grades of 8.0/10 or higher" | 7.0 is the floor; check your course for 8.0 |
| Birmingham | "a minimum overall grade of 7 out of 10 for 2:1 equivalence, or 6 out of 10 for 2:2 equivalence" | A 6.x can still meet a 2:2 course |
| York | "a grade of 7 to 8.9 out of 10, very good, 'notable' or 2.0 out of 4.0 is considered comparable to a UK 2:1"; "6 to 6.9 out of 10, good, 'aprobado' or 1.5 out of 4.0" for a 2:2 | York also reads a 4-point average if your record gives one |
| Fulbright Spain (US master's and PhD route, 2027–28 call) | Nota media entered "tal y como figura en el expediente académico"; rounding it is grounds for rejection; preselection uses a normalized cut-off of 8.5 or 8.0 by field | Never round; the Fulbright Spain proyecto de beca guide covers that call |
| US graduate schools | Stanford's FAQ: "Enter your GPA as it appears on your transcript." Berkeley wants grades "transcribed, not converted" | The foreign grades to GPA guide has the school-by-school rules |
Notice what the three UK pages do not share. Bristol gives a floor. Birmingham gives two class lines. York names the bands and adds a 4-point figure. None of them asks you to convert, and none of them mentions MH.
Our view: check eligibility against the line of the university you are applying to, then keep equivalence claims out of your statement. The basis is the table: the readers publish their own lines and read your number on your scale. The countercase: a course page that sets its own higher line (Bristol's "8.0/10 or higher") overrides the country page. Read the course page last, and trust it first.
Writing Matrícula de Honor on the CV and in the SOP
A foreign reader does not know what MH is. Give it one gloss, once, and then a count.
On the CV, on the degree line:
Grado en Economía, Universidad de [name], 2025. Nota media 7.4/10. Matrícula de Honor in 3 subjects (a distinction for grades of 9.0 or more, limited by Spanish law to 5% of a subject's students).
In the SOP, one clause, attached to the subject that matters for the program. Do not explain the grading system. Do not call MH "the highest honor" without the rule behind it.
Constructed example: an MH paragraph cut to one clause
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Lucía Navarro has a 7.4 nota media in economics and MH in Econometrics I, Econometrics II and Time Series. She is applying to taught master's programs in economics in the UK.
Before (52 words): "I am proud to say that I obtained Matrícula de Honor, the highest possible distinction in the Spanish university system, which is only given to the very best students. This demonstrates my excellent academic level and my strong dedication. My average grade is 7.4, which is equivalent to a very good level."
After (34 words): "My strongest results were in the econometrics sequence, where I received Matrícula de Honor in all three courses; that sequence is why I built my final-year project on forecasting regional unemployment with quarterly data."
The revision cuts the self-praise and the equivalence claim. It keeps the one fact a reader can use, the MH count, and ties it to the subjects the program cares about and to a project. The 7.4 goes on the form and CV, on its own scale. The gloss that explains MH lives on the CV, not in the statement.
When your nota media is 6.5 to 7.5
In this range the published lines decide more than any sentence you write.
- Check the line at each university. At Birmingham, 6 out of 10 is listed for a 2:2; at York, 6 to 6.9 "aprobado" is listed for a 2:2. A 6.8 applicant should look for courses that accept a 2:2, not explain the number away.
- Find the distribution column. If your expediente prints the share of students at each grade (Article 5.2), a 7.2 in a subject where few students passed with Notable is calibration. Ask a recommender to mention it; recommenders can compare you with a group, which the statement cannot do credibly.
- Know that Fulbright Spain adjusts. The commission does not take your nota media raw. Its call says the average "se normalizará mediante los indicadores de rendimiento académico publicados por el Ministerio", taking into account "la universidad y el ámbito de estudio específicos". The ministry's academic performance statistics say they cover "las notas de los expedientes"; the latest data on October 31, 2026 were for 2023–2024, published October 22, 2025. A UK or US reader will not run that adjustment for you.
- Write one clause at most, and only about a trend or a subject. If your final two years were stronger, say so with numbers. If the problem is a single bad year, how to explain a low GPA in your SOP covers the wording.
Our view: below 7.0, spend your effort on course selection, not on prose. No sentence moves a published line, and Birmingham and York both publish a 2:2 line you may already meet.
Questions about Spanish grades
Should I round 7.46 to 7.5?
No. Fulbright Spain treats rounding as grounds for rejection, and US schools such as Stanford ask for the GPA as it appears on the transcript. Type 7.46 and 10.
Does Matrícula de Honor count as a 10 in my average?
The decree does not say. Article 5 sets the bands and the cap but no numeric value for MH, so how your university treats it in the media is set by your university's own rules. Do not claim a value your record does not print.
Is a Grado the same as a Licenciatura on these pages?
Birmingham and York list both by name for master's entry. Bristol's page names the Licenciado, Ingeniero and Arquitecto. For what the degree type means for master's and PhD entry, see whether a licenciatura is a bachelor's or a master's.
Should I translate "Notable" as "very good"?
York's page does, but the decree gives only the Spanish labels. On a CV, write the band with its number: "Notable (7.0–8.9/10)". How to write the degree title itself is in writing a licenciatura or laurea on a CV.
My degree is from a private Spanish university. Does anything change?
For Fulbright Spain it does: the call says degrees from private Spanish centers or foreign institutions need the ministry's Declaración de Equivalencia, or alternatively the European Diploma Supplement or the Declaración de Equivalencia de Nota Media. UK and US pages above make no such distinction. More guides on grades from other systems: Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian grades: one 4.5, two maximums.
