TUM Master’s: Can You Apply Without a VPD?
TUM may accept a pending VPD with its prescribed placeholder. Check both application deadlines and the final VPD upload deadline.
TUM Master’s: Can You Apply Without a VPD?
You can submit a TUM master’s application while the VPD is pending if you follow TUM’s confirmation procedure. You still need a complete, timely VPD request, the required placeholder and all other documents. The final VPD has a separate deadline.
What a pending VPD actually permits
TUM’s uni-assist instructions distinguish requesting the credential review from completing the university application. A master’s VPD request must meet the program’s application deadline. When processing is pending, upload TUM’s signed confirmation form in place of the final VPD.
The placeholder is not a permanent substitute. TUM currently lists February 15 for the summer-semester grace period and July 15 for master’s winter-semester applications, conditional on timely, complete applications and correct other documents. Upload the final VPD within the applicable period; aptitude assessment cannot proceed before it arrives.
Use the German motivation-letter guide for the separate writing task. For an existing certificate, check whether your VPD can be reused.
Check the document, not just the status colour
Make a four-row application record:
| Record | What you need to establish |
|---|---|
| VPD request | Correct recipient, complete documents and timely payment/request |
| TUM application | Submitted program application and required signed placeholder |
| Other documents | Each required upload is complete and accepted or needs correction |
| Final VPD | Exact follow-up deadline and evidence of final upload |
TUM explains that a placeholder may show “not ok” to allow replacement. Read the explanation attached to your document: the label alone does not tell you whether the problem is routine replacement or a substantive defect.
Our recommendation: save the application confirmation and each relevant portal message in that record. If the explanation is unclear, send admissions one specific question identifying the program, intake, document and deadline. A general processing-delay email does not establish that a deadline has changed.
Worked example: pending is different from missing
Illustrative case created by GradPilot: An applicant completes both applications on time but has only a payment receipt in the TUM VPD upload field. Another applicant uploads the required signed confirmation and later sees a replacement request.
The first applicant should compare the upload against the official form requirement immediately. The second should inspect the message and track the final-document deadline. Neither should infer approval from having paid uni-assist, or infer final rejection solely from a placeholder status.
If the final VPD is still unavailable near the deadline, ask TUM about your recorded case before that deadline. Do not rely on another student’s extension or assume a delay will be excused.
Prepare the statement within the program’s rules
Keep TUM’s statement requirements and Informatics test requirements on separate checklist rows.
For example, TUM Informatics requires applicants to “write it without any assistance.” Respect that restriction. GradPilot’s German motivation-letter rubric and graduate statement review describe writing feedback, not VPD processing or eligibility decisions. Find other preparation topics in the graduate application hub.
