Can You Reuse a VPD for a New Master’s?

Check your VPD’s recipient, age and qualifying degree before reuse. TUM’s three-year acceptance rule does not apply across Germany.

Can You Reuse a VPD for a New Master’s?

You may be able to reuse a VPD for a later master’s intake, but its age alone is insufficient. Check the receiving university, accepted validity period and whether your qualification or admission requirements changed. TUM rejects VPDs requested for another university.

One year and three years refer to different rules

Uni-assist’s general VPD guidance gives one-year validity from issue, independent of the semester selected. TUM’s own acceptance rule allows three years if the relevant entrance qualification and admission requirements remain unchanged; it requires a VPD issued for TUM.

Read these together: a university-specific acceptance provision is not permission to use that certificate across Germany. The general German application guide explains where the VPD fits; this decision is about the particular document already in your account.

Audit the certificate before reapplying

Use the actual PDF and your new target’s current instructions:

  1. Recipient: Which university was the VPD requested for? If it differs, check the new university’s explicit policy before treating it as reusable.
  2. Issue date: Calculate its age on the relevant submission date. Do not substitute the semester label for the issue date.
  3. Qualification: Compare the academic records underlying the old assessment with the records now requested. Flag newly completed study or a changed final result for clarification.
  4. Current requirements: Confirm the university still accepts that document under its present rule.
  5. Fresh application: Record the new program application, uploads and deadline separately.

Do not edit a VPD’s university name, date or assessment yourself. If you need a new evaluation, plan it as a document task, not a quick filename change. General reapplication material reuse follows the same principle: reusable evidence does not automatically create a new submission.

Worked example: same applicant, different targets

Illustrative case created by GradPilot: You hold a TUM VPD issued 18 months ago and are considering another TUM master’s plus a master’s elsewhere.

For TUM, review the unchanged-qualification and unchanged-requirements conditions instead of discarding the document solely because it is older than a year. For the other university, its own instructions must answer recipient and age questions. TUM’s three-year provision settles neither.

Write the result as two rows in your shortlist: “reuse confirmed under target policy” or “new assessment/clarification needed.” An unresolved row should have a question and a contact, not an assumed yes.

Does receiving a VPD submit my university application?

No. In the VPD procedure, uni-assist tells you to apply directly to the university with the document. If the document is still processing for TUM, follow its separate pending-VPD procedure.

Update your statement for the new target

A reusable credential assessment does not make an old motivation letter suitable for a new program. Recheck the TUM writing requirements, including assistance policies: Informatics says to “write it without any assistance.”

For permitted writing preparation, GradPilot publishes a German motivation-letter rubric and offers graduate statement review. This is feedback on admissions writing. Use the graduate essays hub for related guidance.
