UK Conditional Offer: Final Transcript Not Ready

At Cambridge, a late final transcript is a deadline problem before it is an offer problem. Academic conditions for a 1 October start are due by 31 July, and you may request an extension from 1 June, which Cambridge says is generally given only if you have met all other outstanding conditions. Clear those first, then ask in writing.

The case that does not fix itself is a missed grade. Cambridge says a department that wants you anyway "will need to seek dispensation to admit you" below its 2:1-equivalent minimum. Our view: treat the transcript as a sequence problem. Upload everything else early, so that the academic condition is the only open item when you ask for time.

Every university page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Cambridge's Postgraduate Offer Conditions Guide is the 2027/28 edition. Other universities set the deadline in your offer letter, so read yours first.

What a conditional offer is

Edinburgh's definition: "A conditional offer means you have a place on a degree programme, but there are requirements you must first meet before we can confirm your place." You "must provide any outstanding supporting documents (such as English language test results, official degree transcripts or signed forms) as soon as possible through the Applicant Hub". You can accept before sending them, but Edinburgh "must receive all the required documents" before it can "make an unconditional offer" or "confirm your place".

Cambridge lists its condition types: academic, English language, visa, financial, and a part-time attendance declaration for part-time students. Its guide adds: "It is your responsibility to meet all conditions before the deadline or your offer will be withdrawn."

The rules you are working inside

The extension row sets two tests. A request before 1 June is outside the window, and a request with an open English or financial condition generally fails the "all other outstanding conditions" test.

Upload, do not email

Cambridge's instruction is short: "Do not email or post documents to us". "Do not contact us to confirm that they have been uploaded". It updates Self-Service when it has assessed each document, and "You will not be notified if anything changes in your Self-Service account."

The guide also limits how you send academic documents. It names three options: a secure electronic service such as Parchment, Digitary or HEAR; Qualification Check, which costs £49; or a document upload. Upload "may not be available in your case", and it is not available for documents "issued by institutions in the USA and Canada". Whichever route applies, your final transcript must show:

  • "the final classification, average score and/or grade"
  • any modules or scores the condition names
  • "the date the degree was awarded or completed"
  • "the formal title of the degree"
  • the awarding institution
  • "for degrees from outside the UK, an explanation, in English, of the marking scheme used"

If any of that is missing, you "must also upload a degree certificate". A consolidated marksheet that leaves out the marking scheme does not meet the last line on its own.

Interim evidence: which letter counts

This is the part that is easy to misread. Cambridge's guide describes two interim letters, and neither is a general provisional-certificate route for a bachelor's finalist.

Your situationWhat Cambridge accepts before final documentsGuide section
Condition is a grade in a master's you are still finishing, and you already hold a 2:1-equivalent bachelor'sA signed Registrar's letter on headed paper with your "indicative result", completion dates, and when you have no further obligations; the department "may provisionally accept you"4.3
Condition is to complete your current course, with no grade setAfter 1 June, a letter "dated no earlier than 1 June" with your expected completion and award dates, plus a signed completion declaration4.4.1
Condition is a grade in the bachelor's you are finishing nowFinal documents by the deadline, or an extension request from 1 June3.1, 4.1

The guide's fallback, stated in section 4.3, is blunt: "If you are unable to meet your academic condition due to the timing of results, you may either apply to defer your admission (see 15.3) or withdraw your application and re-apply in the next academic year."

Our view: if you are a bachelor's finalist, do not wait for a provisional route the guide does not offer you. Get your university to publish a results date in writing now, and use it in the extension request the day the window opens.

The countercase: if your degree certificate and transcript will both be ready before 31 July, none of this applies. Upload them when issued, and do not send an extension request to be safe: documents submitted by the deadline protect the offer even before they are processed.

Missing the grade

If your final grade comes in below the condition, Cambridge says: "it will be up to the department or faculty to decide whether they still want to admit you." Below the University's minimum, "a 2:1 from a UK university or equivalent from an overseas university", the department "will need to seek dispensation". Upload the transcript anyway. The decision belongs to the department, and an unsent transcript gives it nothing to decide on.

Edinburgh's deposit policy treats this as a refund case if "you fail to meet the conditions of your offer", with "appropriate validating evidence". It adds: "If you do not make an attempt to meet the conditions of our offer, we will not refund the deposit." What to send and when is on our page on UK master's offer replies, deposits and deferrals.

The email asking for more time

At Cambridge the request goes through the contact form with the topic "deadline extension". Elsewhere, write to the admissions contact on your offer letter.

Constructed example: the extension request

Two constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant emails. Context (invented): an applicant from an Indian university finishing a four-year bachelor's, holding a Cambridge MPhil offer for 1 October 2027 with a grade condition. Their university's published result date is in mid-July 2027, and the English and financial conditions are already marked complete.

Weak version:

Respected Sir/Madam, my final results are not yet declared due to university delay. Kindly give me more time to submit my transcript. I assure you I will get a good grade.

Revised version (85 words, topic line included):

Topic: deadline extension. Applicant [number], MPhil [course], 1 October 2027 entry.

My academic condition asks for [grade] in my B.Tech at [university]. All my other conditions are marked complete in Self-Service. My university's examination office has published the final result date as [date], and I have attached that notice. I will request my transcript through [secure service, if my university uses one] on that date.

Could you extend my academic condition deadline to [date, about two weeks after the result date]?

Ananya Rao (invented name)

Why the revision works: it is sent inside Cambridge's window, it shows the "all other outstanding conditions" test is met, and it attaches dated evidence from the university instead of a promise about the grade. The weak version asks for open-ended time, gives no date, and offers an outcome no one can check.

Your transcript checklist

  1. Read your offer for the exact academic condition: grade, modules, and the deadline.
  2. Upload every non-academic condition first: English test report, financial evidence, any declarations.
  3. Ask your university, now, for its published final-result date and how it issues transcripts (secure service, Qualification Check, or a sealed copy).
  4. Check that the final transcript will show the grade, award date, degree title, institution and an English explanation of the marking scheme. If not, plan to add the degree certificate.
  5. If the result date falls after the deadline, send the extension request from 1 June (Cambridge), with the result-date evidence attached.
  6. If an extension is refused or the date moves again, read the deferral rule before the deadline, not after.

Questions about academic conditions

Can I email my transcript to the admissions office?

Not at Cambridge, which says "Do not email or post documents to us". Upload it in Self-Service, or use the secure route your condition names.

Will Cambridge accept a provisional certificate?

The 2027/28 guide describes two interim letters: a Registrar's letter for a master's in progress when you already hold a 2:1-equivalent degree, and a completion letter where no grade is set. For a bachelor's grade condition it asks for final documents, or an extension request.

When can I ask for an extension?

From 1 June in your year of entry, and generally only if all other conditions are met.

My documents are uploaded but not checked yet. Will I lose my offer?

No. Cambridge says an offer will not be withdrawn if you submitted documents by the deadline and they have not been processed.

What if my grade is below the condition?

The department decides. Below a 2:1 equivalent, it must seek dispensation to admit you.

My English condition is the problem, not my transcript.
