UK Conditional Offer: IELTS Not Met? Your Routes

If your IELTS is below the English condition on a UK master's offer, the gap decides the route. At Sheffield, a 10-week pre-sessional takes you if you are no more than 1 band below overall, with no component under 5.0. A 6-week course takes half a band. Further below, retake first.

The other two routes are narrower than they look. A retake must meet every score in one sitting at Edinburgh and Cambridge. And an English-medium degree counts at Edinburgh only if your university is on its named list. Our view: pick the route from the table below on the day your score arrives, because Sheffield's pre-sessional application deadlines fall between 31 May and 12 July 2027, before a condition deadline such as Cambridge's 31 July.

Every university page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Sheffield's dates are for summer 2027 courses. Your offer letter's English condition, not this page, sets your target.

On this page: the rules · three routes · pre-sessional limits · degree waivers · the email · deadlines and deposits · questions

This page starts after the offer. If you have not applied yet, the questions are different: low IELTS and the SOP covers what (not) to write, and the UK IELTS waiver guide for Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya compares country waivers.

Read the first row twice. A 7.0 in writing from March and a 6.5 overall from May do not add up to a pass at either university. Each new test has to clear every line on its own.

For a September 2027 start at Edinburgh, a two-year test must be dated on or after 1 September 2025 (our arithmetic from the "1st of the month" rule). If you sit a new test, that is not an issue; if you are relying on an old one, check its date.

Our view: if you are half a band short, book the retake and apply for the pre-sessional at the same time. The retake is cheaper if it works; the pre-sessional place protects the September start if it does not.

The countercase: if your gap is a full band, a retake is a gamble against a fixed calendar. Go straight to the 10-week course where your university runs one, because its deadline comes first.

Pre-sessional: how far below is allowed

Sheffield's summer 2027 page sets the limits in IELTS terms. It calls the benefit "No more IELTS: Pass course assessments to progress directly to your degree without taking another IELTS test."

10-week campus21 June to 27 August 202731 May 2027£5,500"No more than 1 IELTS band below" overall; "No component below 5.0"; "A maximum of two components at 5.0"

Three conditions sit under the table. You must hold "a conditional or unconditional offer" to study at Sheffield; the page still says a course "beginning in September or October 2026", which looks unchanged from last year, so confirm it with the English Language Teaching Centre. Campus courses take only UK Visas and Immigration approved Secure English Language Tests: IELTS for UKVI (including One Skill Retake), Trinity ISE taken in the UK, PTE Academic UKVI and LanguageCert Academic SELT. And late applications "cannot be considered".

Edinburgh runs its own English for Academic Purposes pre-sessional and accepts the University of Glasgow's in-person programme, completed "no more than two years and one month before the 1 st of the month your degree programme begins". Its entry scores are on its pre-sessional pages, which we did not check.

Constructed example: reading your score against the limits

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's result. Context (invented): a Sheffield MSc offer with an English condition of IELTS 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each component. The applicant's result: 6.0 overall, writing 5.5, the other three at 6.0.

  • Overall gap: 6.5 minus 6.0 is 0.5 (our arithmetic). That is inside the 6-week limit.
  • Lowest component: 5.5, which is "At least 5.5 in every component", and 0.5 below the 6.0 component requirement.
  • Result: eligible for the 6-week course, and therefore also the 10-week course. Applying by 28 June 2027 keeps the 6-week option open; applying by 31 May 2027 keeps both.

Change one number and the answer changes. With writing at 5.0, the 6-week rule fails ("At least 5.5"), but the 10-week rule still holds: no component below 5.0, one component at 5.0, no component more than 1.0 below its 6.0 requirement, and none more than 1.5 below the 6.5 overall (our arithmetic).

English-medium degree waivers

Edinburgh accepts a degree "taught and assessed in English" in a UK Visas and Immigration majority English-speaking country, or "on our list of approved universities in non-majority English-speaking countries". For India, the list has 31 entries, including the IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras, the University of Delhi and the University of Mumbai. The rule under the India heading decides who is covered: "We have approved the named university only. Affiliated colleges and other related institutions are not covered, and an English language test is still required." Some colleges are named on the list in their own right, such as St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, so look for your college's own name before you assume a test is needed. The degree must also be "no more than five years old" if you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country.

That is the difference from the US. Some US graduate schools accept an English-medium degree letter as the evidence; our page on the medium of instruction letter for US grad school and the TOEFL waiver guide cover those rules. At Edinburgh, a letter from an affiliated college does not move you onto the list.

Cambridge's guide works the other way round: a language condition may not be set if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country "and have been educated in English", or hold a three-year degree completed in such a country within two years of the start date. If a condition was set on your offer, the guide says "we generally require that you successfully complete an accepted test".

The email to admissions

Write only to ask a question the page does not answer, and name the rule you are asking about. Cambridge says "Do not email or post documents to us"; upload test reports in Self-Service instead.

Constructed example: the English-condition email

Two constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant emails. Context (invented): an Edinburgh offer-holder with IELTS 6.0 against a 6.5 condition, whose degree is from an affiliated college of a listed university.

Weak version:

Dear Sir, my IELTS is 6.0 but my whole degree was in English medium. I request you to please waive the IELTS requirement as I am confident in English.

Revised version (81 words, subject line included):

Subject: English condition, MSc [programme], applicant [number]

Dear Admissions Team,

My offer requires IELTS 6.5 overall. My result from [date] is 6.0 overall, with 6.0 in each component. My degree is from [college], an affiliated college of [listed university], so I understand it is not covered by your approved list. Could you confirm which pre-sessional routes are open for my programme at this score, and the last date you would accept a new IELTS result?

Kind regards, Ananya Rao (invented name)

Why the revision works: it quotes the condition and the score, accepts the list rule instead of arguing with it, and asks two questions the published pages leave to the programme. The weak version asks for a waiver no page offers.

Deadlines and your deposit

The English condition has the same deadline as the rest of your offer. Cambridge's is 31 July for a 1 October start. Sheffield's four summer courses all end on 27 August 2027, so a pass arrives after a 31 July deadline like Cambridge's; ask your admissions team how a pre-sessional offer is recorded against your condition.

If you fail to meet the English condition after trying, Edinburgh refunds the deposit if you "provide appropriate validating evidence", and adds: "If you do not make an attempt to meet the conditions of our offer, we will not refund the deposit." The full refund rules are on our page on deposit refunds after a visa refusal, and the deposit and deferral replies are in UK master's offer: accept, deposit, defer emails.

For a Student visa, Edinburgh says the English qualification you use "must be included in our list of accepted qualifications", unless you are a national of a majority English-speaking country. The visa steps are on GOV.UK.

Questions about English conditions

Can I combine my best IELTS scores from two tests?

Not at Edinburgh or Cambridge. Both require every score in one test or one sitting.

Can I send my IELTS score after the deadline?

At Cambridge, the conditions deadline for a 1 October start is 31 July, and an extension is for an academic condition when all others are met. Treat the English deadline as fixed and ask admissions early if your test date is close to it.

Is one band below too far for a pre-sessional?

At Sheffield, one band below overall is the limit for the 10-week course, with no component below 5.0. Beyond that, retake first.

Does my English-medium degree from India count at Edinburgh?

Only if your university, or your college by its own name, is on Edinburgh's list. An affiliated college that is not named is not covered.

My academic condition is late as well. What now?

That is a separate condition with its own evidence rules. See UK conditional offer: final transcript not ready.
