Low IELTS for a Master's: Explain It in the SOP?

Low IELTS for a master's? Do not explain it in your SOP. Toronto wants 7.0 with 6.5 in each band. When to retake, use a pre-sessional or ask for a waiver.

Low IELTS for a Master's: Explain It in the SOP?

No. Do not explain a low IELTS score in your SOP. The English minimum is a requirement of admission, checked against your score report. The University of Toronto, for example, asks for IELTS 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each component, and a paragraph in the statement does not change a band.

What does change the outcome is one of three routes: a retake, a university's own English course, or an exemption the university's rules already allow. This page shows the published rules behind each route, a decision table, and the one place where a written sentence helps. The statement itself should be about your subject; the MS statement of purpose rubric reads it for that.

Every university page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Toronto's calendar is the 2026-27 edition; the other pages state no year. Toronto says "many graduate units require a higher score" than its minimum, so read your program's page.

What universities publish about English minimums

UniversityWhat the page says
Toronto, SGS Calendar 2026-27IELTS "Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component." "Minimum scores are indicated; however, many graduate units require a higher score."
Toronto, same section"This is a requirement of admission and should be met before application but must be met before the deadline to register." "Test results that are older than two years at the time of application cannot be accepted."
Toronto, SGS admission requirements"If English is not your primary language and you graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, then you must demonstrate your proficiency in English."
UBC, IndiaApplicants from an English-medium Indian university "may not need an English language proficiency examination"; "graduate programs have the right to request a language test when deemed necessary, even if the language of instruction has been English."
Manchester, Nigeria"For postgraduate applicants we can waive the English requirement for students who can demonstrate that their degree from Nigeria was taught entirely in English."
York, Ghana"We can help you improve your English language skills before you start at York through our Pre-sessional English language courses."

Read the Toronto lines together. The score is a requirement of admission, many graduate units raise the minimum, and an old score does not count. None of that leaves room for a statement to argue the number.

The visa side in one paragraph

For Australia, the English score also feeds the university's genuine student check. Adelaide University's guidance for its agency partners lists it among risk factors: "Low English test result - This now appears to be a significant risk factor. If an applicant has below IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) we recommend that they improve their score to avoid GSR or student visa refusal." The genuine student statement itself is covered in the Australia genuine student statement guide; the visa process is out of scope here.

Three routes: retake, pre-sessional, waiver

Our view: pick the route before you write a word about English. A low score is a document problem with a document fix.

The countercase: some departments interview applicants or publish their own English route. If your program's page names one, that page is the rule. And an exemption is never automatic where the page keeps a right to ask for a test, as UBC's does.

For US programs, the waiver logic is different: some decide by country list, others by medium of instruction. The TOEFL waiver guide compares six US schools. For UK master's applicants from Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, see the UK IELTS waiver guide.

The one case where a sentence helps

Write about English only when a form asks you to: a waiver or exemption request, or a field asking why you have no test score. Then give the fact and the evidence, not a defence of your English.

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.

Weak version:

Although my IELTS score is lower than required, I have always been confident in English and I studied in English throughout my degree. I request you to kindly consider my strong academic profile instead.

Revised version:

My B.Tech at Sample Institute of Technology (invented) was taught and examined entirely in English for all eight semesters. The attached letter from the registrar confirms the medium of instruction and examination.

Why the revision works: it matches the wording of the rules above ("language of instruction and examination", "taught entirely in English") and points to the document that proves it. The weak version asks the reader to set the rule aside, which none of the pages above offers to do.

Inside the statement of purpose, the best evidence of your English is the statement. Write it plainly, in short sentences, and let a reader check it against the UK master's personal statement requirements or your program's own prompt.

Questions about low IELTS scores

Applying to the US instead? See low TOEFL: should you mention it in your SOP, which adds the separate teaching-assistant speaking minimum.

My writing band is one below the minimum. Is that a fail?

At Toronto, yes: the calendar asks for "at least 6.5 for each component", so a 6.0 in writing does not meet it even with a 7.0 overall. Check whether your department sets the same per-band rule.

Can a strong SOP make up for a low IELTS score?

None of the pages quoted here offers that route. Toronto calls the English score "a requirement of admission". Put the effort into the retake or the exemption.

Does an English-medium degree count instead of IELTS?

It depends on the university and your country. Manchester waives it for postgraduate applicants whose Nigerian degree "was taught entirely in English". UBC says English-medium Indian graduates "may not need" a test but can be asked for one. Toronto asks for proof of English where the "language of instruction and examination was not English" at your non-Canadian university.

Should I mention my IELTS score in the SOP at all?

No. The score goes in the application form and the score report. If your Canadian application has a low GPA too, the Canada low-GPA guide covers what the statement should say about grades.
