UK Master’s in 2026: Graduate Visa Length

A UK master's starting in 2026 does not lock in a two-year Graduate visa. Eligible non-doctoral applications from January 1, 2027 receive 18 months under the published rules. The Graduate application date matters; PhD graduates retain three years.

Follow the application date, not the intake

GOV.UK's Graduate visa guidance, checked September 12, 2026, distinguishes applications made on or before December 31, 2026 from those made on or after January 1, 2027. The former receive two years; the latter receive 18 months for eligible non-doctoral qualifications.

This change is already written into Appendix Graduate, paragraph GR 8.1. It is not merely a proposal awaiting a decision. A Student visa application, university deposit or course start before the cutoff does not replace the relevant Graduate application date.

You must also actually qualify when applying. The university must have notified the Home Office of successful completion, you must be in the UK, and you must apply before your Student permission expires. You do not need to wait for a graduation ceremony or certificate, but you cannot assume that finishing your final assignment means completion has been reported.

Our recommendation: an applicant beginning a typical autumn 2026 master's should build their plan around their real completion and notification schedule. Using an old two-year assumption because the admission offer arrived in 2026 is not sound planning.

Put three dates on the same calendar

Before accepting an offer, ask the university about the process behind each date:

1. Expected academic completion: include the dissertation or project, rather than only the last taught class.
2. Completion reporting: ask when the university can confirm success and notify the Home Office. Record that as an estimate until it happens.
3. Student permission expiry: identify the deadline that limits the actual Graduate application window.

Then apply the current duration rule to the anticipated Graduate application date. Recheck the official page before applying; a multi-year education plan cannot freeze future policy.

Illustrative intake comparison

Imagine an applicant who starts a master's in September 2026 and expects successful completion in autumn 2027. If eligible and applying for Graduate permission in 2027, the published non-doctoral period is 18 months. Their September 2026 arrival does not put them into the earlier two-year category.

Contrast that with an otherwise eligible master's graduate whose university reports completion in December 2026 and who applies before the end of that month while their Student permission remains valid. That different application date falls into the published two-year category.

These are invented timelines showing the rule's trigger, not suggested ways to bring an ineligible application forward. An unfinished project or unreported completion should not be ignored to meet a calendar cutoff.

Graduate permission cannot be extended, although a person may qualify for another route. Also check which UK residence years count toward Skilled Worker settlement; the length of Graduate permission does not answer that question.
