What Happens After You Submit the UC Application
After you submit the UC application: campus portal emails by January, December verification notices, decisions March 1–31, SIR by May 1, 2027. Dated.
What Happens After You Submit the UC Application
For fall 2027 first-year applicants who file by November 30, 2026, UC campuses generally post decisions between March 1 and 31, 2027. Before that, each campus emails you "By January" to set up its applicant portal, and a random sample of applicants is notified in December to send verification documents. The SIR deadline is May 1, 2027.
Many "after you apply" pages tell you to wait. That is the wrong frame. The losses that happen between December and March are avoidable: a portal email that went to spam, a verification notice nobody opened, a dropped class that a campus wanted to hear about. Treat the months after you submit as a checklist. This page puts UC's dates from six official sources into one calendar.
Every UC page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. Campus portals and campus rules can add steps; your portal is the authority for your own application.

Set up every campus portal
UC's Admissions decisions page: "By January, each campus you applied to will email you to create a username and password for access to the campus' applicant portal. This is the site where the admission decision will be posted along with other important information. You should check each campus portal frequently."
Three things to do now:
- Save your UC Application ID. UC says it "is used to access the various campus student portals and, in many cases, to access your admission decisions."
- Watch the email address on your application, including spam and promotions folders. If you chose a school email, UC's 2026–27 deck notes that a school-issued address "is not recommended," so consider updating it. UC lets you update your email after you submit.
- Log in to each portal when the email arrives, not in March. Campuses post "other important information" there too.
Our recommendation: keep one list with every campus, the date its portal email arrived, and the date you last logged in. If a campus has not emailed by the end of January, contact that campus's admissions office.
What you can still change, and what you cannot
UC's After you apply page:
- You can "update your telephone number, email, mailing address or various test scores," and "apply to additional campuses if they're still open."
- You cannot change your writing or activities: "Changes to the Activities & awards and PIQ sections will not be accepted once your application is submitted."
- You cannot start over: "once your application is submitted, you cannot unsubmit or submit a duplicate application. Duplicate applications will be canceled."
Do not send extra material. UC's PIQ worksheet says: "UC does not review unsolicited supplemental information (transcripts, letters of recommendation or resumes)." UC's Apply now page: "UC does not require (nor read) letters of recommendation at the time of application. A campus may ask for them later as part of a supplemental review, so be sure to check your email." Answer a request if one comes. Do not send one unasked.
If you are selected for verification
UC's Quick Reference Guide (August 2026, p. 61) says a random sample of applicants is "notified in December that they must submit verification documents in order to be considered for admission," and that "Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will result in an application being withdrawn from further admission consideration at all campuses." The notice gives the deadline. What to send, and a step-by-step procedure, are in UC application verification.
Senior grades still count
UC's decisions page: "Offers of admission are provisional until the campus receives your final official transcript and verifies successful completion of all coursework required for UC eligibility." And: "If any information on your application is found to be incomplete or inaccurate or if your performance drops significantly during the senior year, the offer of admission may be revoked."
Changes to your schedule or a grade below C after you submit follow campus-by-campus rules, and some campuses take no updates at all. The rules for all nine campuses, and what to do about each kind of mistake, are in UC application mistake after submitting.
Our view: the most expensive thing you can do between December and May is treat senior year as over. The PIQs are frozen, but your grades are not, and UC's own wording ties the offer to them. The countercase: if a real problem, such as illness or a family emergency, hurts a senior grade, that is a reason to follow the campus's reporting instructions quickly, not a reason to hide it. UC treats "withholding information requested on the application" as falsification (Statement of Application Integrity).
Waitlists and appeals, in one paragraph each
Waitlists. UC's decisions page: "You can accept waitlist offers from multiple campuses, but you can only accept one offer of admission." It adds: "Even if you accept a waitlist offer at a UC campus, you should submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to a college or university where you have been offered admission by May 1 to ensure you have a place to attend in the fall." Waitlists "could extend into the summer."
Transfer applicants follow different dates; see the UC transfer waitlist guide.
Appeals. UC's decisions page: "admission decisions are rarely reversed. However, students who are not admitted may request a review of the decision if they believe there was an error in the evaluation or can provide new and compelling information not included in the initial application. Each campus has specific procedures to handle such appeals." Campus procedures for fall 2027 are a spring question. Check the campus's own page then.
Questions about what happens after you submit
When do UC decisions come out for fall 2027?
Generally March 1–31, 2027, for applicants who filed between October 1 and November 30, 2026. UC's dates page adds that "Some campuses may release decisions prior to March."
Can I edit my PIQs after submitting?
No. UC: "Changes to the Activities & awards and PIQ sections will not be accepted once your application is submitted."
Can I write a new PIQ for the waitlist?
UC's pages do not describe one. Waitlist steps are set by each campus and arrive in its portal.
Do I have to accept every UC that admits me?
No. UC says you "may accept admission to one campus only," and you "may not transfer your SIR from one campus to another after it's been submitted." UC encourages you to wait until you have heard from every campus before you submit an SIR.
A December-to-July checklist
- Save your UC Application ID and a printed copy of your application.
- Check ELC status if you are a California resident (UC ELC explained).
- File the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application by March 2, 2027.
- Open every email from UC in December, in case you are in the verification sample.
- Create every campus portal login when the email arrives, by January.
- Follow each campus's rules for schedule changes or low grades.
- Keep your senior grades up.
- Read every decision in March, then compare offers before May 1.
- Opt in to any waitlist you want by the campus's deadline, and still submit one SIR by May 1.
- Send final transcripts by July 1 and exam scores by July 15. If an email asks for letters or seventh-semester grades, see what a UC letter-of-recommendation request means.
