What Reviewers Look For in the GKS Graduate Application — South Korea

This rubric reviews whether your two forms clearly explain your motivation, preparation, fit with Korea and your chosen university and department, language preparation, study plan, and future plans. It also checks that each form covers its own topics, uses concrete and truthful details, and stays consistent without repeating the same material.

What We Check

1
GKS Motivation and Formative Trajectory

Why the applicant is pursuing the 2026 GKS Graduate programme and how a response-visible event, person, decision, or experience shaped that choice.

2
Demonstrated Preparation, Achievement, and Experience

What the applicant has already done that prepares them for the proposed graduate work.

3
Korea, University, and Department Alignment

Whether response-visible Korean, university, and department elements serve the applicant's stated plan.

4
Korean and English Language Preparation

The language plan Form 3 requests before and after arrival for the languages needed in the degree.

5
Academic Study Goal, Plan, and Feasibility

Form 3's study goal and detailed plan through a bounded question or capability, executable actions, dependencies, and outputs.

6
Future Role and Realistic Contribution

The future plan Form 3 requests in Korea or another country.

7
Cross-Form Consistency and Distinct Work

Whether Forms 2 and 3 agree while performing different jobs.

Mistakes We Flag

Using vague motivation or general praise
Saying you have always dreamed of this path, or calling GKS or Korea prestigious, does not show what shaped your decision. Connect a specific event, person, decision, or experience to an action you took.
Listing credentials without showing your contribution
Degrees, awards, roles, and team projects are more useful when you explain what you personally did and what resulted. Give context for skills by showing how you used them.
Naming Korea or universities without a plan-related link
General statements about strong universities, technology, or Korean culture do not explain why a particular department fits you. Identify a course, lab, method, resource, or training feature and connect it to your study plan.
Making language or study plans too general
Promises to study hard or gain knowledge do not show how your plan will work. Include routines or resources, milestones, academic uses for language, concrete actions, dependencies, and realistic outputs.
Repeating material or leaving form topics unanswered
Form 2 should establish your motivation and preparation, while Form 3 should develop language, study, and future plans. Repetition can take space away from missing applicant-specific content, and conflicts between forms need explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should Form 2 focus on?

Form 2 should explain your motivation and formative influences, along with the education, experience, achievements, skills, service, or work that prepare you for graduate study.

What should Form 3 focus on?

Form 3 should address preparation in Korean and English as needed for the degree, your study goal and detailed plan, and your future plan in Korea or another country.

Do I need to discuss family background, faculty members, or a thesis topic?

Family background is not required. The application requires a desired university and department, but this rubric does not require a set number of faculty names. It also does not universally require a thesis topic.

How much can I write?

The 2026 NIIED guide gives a maximum of 17,000 English characters including spaces per form. A later instruction from NIIED, the Study in Korea portal, a receiving embassy, or a university takes priority if it differs.
