What Reviewers Look For in the MBA — Columbia Application Essays

This rubric reviews whether your answers give clear, specific career plans, show how you changed a team, and explain how you would actively participate in the CBS community. It also checks that the separate responses fit together, answer each requested part in the right place, and use direct professional writing.

What We Check

1
Immediate Goal and First Summer

Evaluate whether the two 50-character fields give direct, usable destinations rather than compressed explanations.

2
Career Direction

Evaluate the reasoning from your three-to-five-year goals to a longer-term dream job.

3
How You Changed a Team

Evaluate one visible example of making a team more collaborative, more inclusive, or more community-minded.

4
Co-Creating the CBS Experience

Evaluate reciprocal participation in CBS through specific actions, people, and program mechanisms.

5
The Answers Work Together

Evaluate contradiction and substantial repetition only within all pasted required August-entry answers.

Mistakes We Flag

Vague career destinations
Short goal fields can become too abstract when they promise impact or leadership without naming the work, field, problem, output, or people served. State the destination directly rather than using the space to explain motivation.
Career path with no bridge
Naming a near-term role and a dream job is not enough if the answer does not show how one leads to the other. Explain the capability, responsibility, or relationship the nearer work will build.
Claiming teamwork without showing it
Saying you are collaborative or inclusive does not show what you changed. Describe a bounded action and its effect on the team’s process, access, participation, or collaboration.
Listing CBS resources without a plan
Courses, clubs, centers, or New York alone do not show how you would co-create the MBA experience. Focus on a CBS mechanism and explain what you would do with other participants.
Repeating or conflicting across answers
Your short goals, career-direction response, team example, and CBS plan should not point to incompatible paths or retell the same story without a new purpose. Let each response do its own job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the limits for these responses?

The immediate-goal and first-summer fields each have a 50-character limit. The career-direction response has a 500-word limit, and the team and CBS responses each have a 250-word limit.

Do I need to summarize my work history in the career-direction response?

No. Prior professional history is already covered in the resume and recommendations. Use only a prior fact that is needed to explain your next direction.

Do I need to be a manager or describe a major conflict in the team essay?

No. Formal authority, a management title, and a dramatic conflict are optional. The response should show one visible way you made a team more collaborative, inclusive, or community-minded.

Do I need a long list of CBS clubs and activities?

No. One credible CBS mechanism can support the response. Explain a specific recurring action you would take with others, rather than only describing resources you would use.
