What Reviewers Look For in the MBA — HEC Paris Written Essays
This rubric looks at whether each answer directly addresses its own prompt with clear reasoning, specific support, and professional language. It also checks whether career goals, program fit, personal experiences, ethical decisions, and cultural or imaginative responses are developed when the supplied prompts ask for them. Across multiple developed answers, it considers whether each one adds useful information rather than repeating the same claim.

What We Check
Whether a response to an explanatory career, professional-objective, or timing prompt states the direction requested and connects the requested present, post-MBA, or longer-term point in the applicant’s path.
Whether a response to a why-HEC or program-contribution prompt identifies a learning activity and explains how it addresses the stated need or objective.
Whether a response to an achievement, lived-experience, leadership, or personal-significance prompt makes the event, the applicant’s role, and the claimed significance understandable.
Whether a response to an ethics, values, judgment, or decision prompt describes the applicant’s reasoning, role, action, and requested reflection.
Whether a response to an imagined-life, place, admired-figure, book, film, play, or cultural-criticism prompt directly develops the selected subject and its interpretation.
Whether two or more supplied developed answers contribute distinguishable information rather than relying only on the same claim.
Mistakes We Flag
- Using a slogan instead of a clear direction
- Statements such as wanting to be a global leader do not explain the role, sector, problem, or next step you are pursuing when the prompt asks for career direction.
- Praising HEC without explaining the fit
- A broad compliment or list of features does not show how a learning activity would help address your stated need or objective.
- Claiming importance without showing your role
- Saying an experience was meaningful or that a team achieved a result is not enough on its own. Explain what you did and include a specific action, constraint, result, or change in perspective.
- Stating values without showing your reasoning
- An ethics or judgment response should make your considerations, role, action, and reflection clear instead of relying on a statement such as “integrity always wins.”
- Repeating the same trait across answers
- If several developed answers rest on the same claim, such as being passionate about impact, they may not add distinct information. Use different events, decisions, learning needs, observations, or interpretations where the prompts allow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to include both short-term and long-term career goals?
Only include the career direction and timing details requested by the specific prompt. A prompt asking only for a post-MBA objective does not automatically require a later career horizon.
How should I explain why HEC Paris is a fit?
Name a learning activity, such as a course, specialization, exchange, project, or mentoring activity, and explain what you would do through it and why it addresses your stated need or objective.
Do I need a dramatic ethical dilemma or a senior title for an ethics essay?
No. You do not need to manufacture a dilemma, hold senior authority, or make the final decision. Describe your reasoning, your role, your action, and the reflection the prompt requests.
Can I use an imagined or cultural response without tying it to my work experience?
Yes. For an imagined-life, place, admired figure, book, film, play, or cultural prompt, directly develop the subject you choose and explain your interpretation. It does not need lived proof or job relevance.
