College Application Deadlines 2026-27, by Date

On Common App's 2026-27 deadline grid, the busiest dates are November 1, 2026 (135 Early Decision and 183 Early Action deadlines) and January 15, 2027 (109 Regular Decision deadlines). Only 17 colleges set Regular Decision on January 1.

Most deadline advice says regular decision falls around January 1. The grid says the January crunch is a staggered week, from January 1 to January 5, with a different set of colleges on each day. If you plan for one date, you will miss the one before it. Once your list is sorted, the supplements are the work: a free review of your supplemental essay checks each answer against the question that school asked.

We counted every row of Common App's 2026-27 First-year deadlines, fees and requirements grid, marked "Updated: 09-25-2026", on October 30, 2026. Colleges can change a date after the grid is printed, so confirm each one on the college's own page and in your Common App dashboard before you build a plan on it.

The short answer: the dates that matter for fall 2027

The grid has 1,128 college rows (Siena University appears three times). A college can appear under several plans, so the rows below do not add up to 1,128. Every count is our arithmetic from the grid, not a figure Common App publishes.

One row, Bard College Berlin, has no RD entry. The grid also lists members outside the US, such as Aberystwyth University, and overseas campuses, such as Georgetown University in Qatar.

Days of the week matter when you plan around a school week: November 1, 2026 and November 15, 2026 are Sundays; January 1, 2027 is a Friday; January 4, 2027 is a Monday; January 15, 2027 is a Friday.

November 1 and November 15: the early clusters

Early Decision. November 1 holds 135 of the 233 ED deadlines. November 15 holds 65, and that list is heavy with liberal arts colleges: Bates, Bowdoin, Carleton, Colby, Davidson, Grinnell, Hamilton, Haverford, Swarthmore, Vassar, Wesleyan and Williams all list ED on November 15, along with Wake Forest, Harvey Mudd, Stevens and Drexel.

Eleven colleges list ED on November 2, 2026, a Monday: Boston University, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, College of Charleston, Duke, Duke Kunshan, Middlebury, St. Lawrence, Tufts, the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis. If one of these is your ED school, your deadline is not November 1.

Early Action. 183 colleges list EA on November 1, 122 on November 15 and 71 on December 1. The early decision vs early action guide covers which plan to use.

Restrictive Early Action. The grid's REA column has five colleges, all on November 1: Caltech, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Notre Dame. Yale has no row in this grid file, so check Yale's own page. The rules on applying elsewhere early are in the restrictive early action guide.

Dates that have already passed. Five ED deadlines and 16 EA deadlines on the grid were October 15, 2026. As of October 30, 2026, those have passed.

When results come out is a different question, answered in the early decision and early action notification dates page.

January: why "Jan 1" is the wrong default

Here is every Regular Decision date in the first week of January, as the grid prints it:

RD date (2027)CollegesCount
Friday, Jan 1Barnard, Clemson, Columbia, Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown, Harvard, Lehigh, Northeastern, Princeton, University of Georgia, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University of Richmond, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Wake Forest, Wesleyan17
Saturday, Jan 2Cornell, Johns Hopkins2
Sunday, Jan 3Fordham1
Monday, Jan 4Babson, Boston College, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Colby, Duke, Duke Kunshan, Hamilton, Middlebury, North Central University, Northwestern, Rice, Swarthmore, Tufts, UChicago, Notre Dame, WashU17
Tuesday, Jan 5Amherst, Boston University, Bowdoin, Brown, Cooper Union, Harvey Mudd, Minerva, NYU, Stanford, Stevens, Syracuse, George Washington, Tennessee Knoxville, UIUC, University of Miami, Penn, Rochester, UVA, Washington and Lee, William & Mary, Williams21
Jan 6 and Jan 7Georgia Tech (Jan 6), Santa Clara (Jan 7)2

That is 60 RD deadlines from January 1 to January 7 (our arithmetic). Then January 15 alone has 109, and February 1 has 86. Of the 502 colleges with a fixed RD date, 17 use January 1. That is about 3% (our arithmetic).

Early Decision II follows a similar spread. 57 colleges list EDII on January 15. Thirteen list January 1: Bryn Mawr, Emerson, Emory, Lehigh, Macalester, NYU, Northeastern, RIT, Richmond, Vanderbilt, Vassar, Wake Forest and Wesleyan. Eleven list January 4, including Boston College, Davidson, Rice, Tufts, UChicago and WashU. Twenty-one list January 5, including Boston University, Grinnell, Haverford, Smith, Wellesley and William & Mary.

Our view: treat the first week of January as five separate deadlines, not one. Sort your list by the exact date the grid and your dashboard show, and finish the January 1 schools first, because they come due before the rest.

The countercase: if your list is mostly large public universities and colleges with rolling admission (625 rows on the grid) or January 15 and February 1 dates, the first week of January barely matters to you. Your hard dates are earlier, in November, or later, in mid-January.

Constructed example: two lists, two different January problems

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's list. The dates come from the grid.

  • List A: Columbia, Emory, Cornell, Duke, Rice, UChicago, Brown, Penn. That is eight RD deadlines in five days: two on January 1, one on January 2, three on January 4 and two on January 5. This student has to finish the Columbia and Emory supplements by New Year's Day, then keep writing.
  • List B: UNC Chapel Hill, UW-Madison, Ohio State, Purdue, Villanova, Tulane. All six list RD on January 15, 2027. This student has one hard date and two extra weeks, but if they wait, six submissions land on the same night.

List A needs a sequence. List B needs a buffer: submit the January 15 schools a few days early so one stalled payment does not take down six applications.

The 11:59 pm rule and time zones

Common App's help article says you must submit "by 11:59 pm on the deadline date posted for the college" and that "The end of the deadline date is in your local time zone, not the college's time zone." (Common App) Timestamps and dashboard dates are shown in US Eastern Time. The step-by-step sequence for deadline night, including the "Deadline has passed" banner, is in how to submit the Common App.

What is due by the deadline, and what may arrive after

The deadline is for your part: the application, the essays and the supplements. Some colleges, including Columbia and USC, say in writing that transcripts and recommendations may arrive after the deadline. None of them extends that to your own essays. Their exact words, and what to send a teacher whose letter is late, are in what to do when a recommendation letter is late.

Outside the Common App: UC and CSU

California State UniversityPriority filing period: August 1, 2026 to November 30, 2026. "Application submission opens on October 1, 2026." (CSU dates and deadlines)

November 30, 2026 is a Monday. UC uses its own application, not the Common App; the differences are in UC application vs Common App.

Build your own deadline map in 10 minutes

  1. List every college you will apply to, with the plan you will use (ED, EA, REA, EDII or RD).
  2. Copy each date from your Common App dashboard (My Colleges), then check it against the college's own admissions page. If they differ, ask the college.
  3. Sort by date, earliest first. Write the day of the week next to each date.
  4. Next to each college, write how many supplemental essays it asks for and their limits. The supplemental essay word limits table and the list of colleges with no supplemental essays save time here.
  5. Set your own submit date three days before each real deadline. This is our recommendation, not a college rule.
  6. Any date inside the next seven days goes into a day-by-day plan; use finish college essays in one week.

Put each college's own date in a supplemental essay tracker next to its prompts and limits.

Questions about 2026-27 college deadlines

Is January 1 the regular decision deadline everywhere?

No. On the 2026-27 grid, 17 of the 502 colleges with a fixed RD date use January 1. January 15 (109 colleges) and February 1 (86) are far more common, and 625 rows list rolling admission.

What is the latest regular decision deadline on the grid?

The latest fixed RD date printed is July 30, 2027, at Manor College. Check that college's own page before you rely on a late date.

Do deadlines move if the Common App site goes down?

Common App's deadline article does not promise an extension. It says, "It is always better to submit well before 11:59 pm to avoid last minute issues with your computer or internet access that might cause you to miss the deadline!" Columbia invites students affected by "natural disasters, community or personal disturbances or other extenuating circumstances" to email its office if an application will arrive late. Do not assume a delay will be excused.

Does my dashboard show deadlines in my time zone?

No. Common App says deadline dates on the dashboard and submission timestamps are in US Eastern Time, but your real cut-off is 11:59 pm in your own time zone. Some colleges let you switch into Early Decision II after applying, with their own deadlines.
