Do DO Schools Accept Update Letters? School Table

Some do. Of 18 DO schools whose admissions pages we re-read on November 7, 2026, 2 accept only AACOMAS academic updates or none at all, 2 take new information by email or through a counselor, and only one page invites a letter of intent. Eight pages say nothing about updates; the rest set limits, define statuses or give decision timing.

That changes how a DO applicant should think about letters. AACOM's traffic guidelines say "COMs may begin extending offers of admission at any time after the interview." Ohio Heritage emails decisions the day after interviews. A letter written in January for a file decided in October is a letter nobody needs. Our view: a DO update letter is worth writing only for a file that is still open, at a school whose page says it takes one, and only when you have a fact the file lacks.

Every AACOM and school page quoted here was fetched on November 7, 2026. AACOM's traffic-guideline page states no cycle year; its application-process page names the 2026-2027 cycle.

The rules every DO applicant is writing inside

AACOMAS sets the floor. Its application-process page lists an applicant protocol. Two lines govern letters:

"Applicants are responsible for reporting and updating any changes in the initially submitted application (e.g., address, telephone number, academic status, and state of residence)."

"Applicants who have made a final decision regarding the medical school they plan to attend have an obligation to promptly withdraw their applications from all other schools."

The same page says "colleges of osteopathic medicine make admissions decisions on a rolling basis. This means they review applications, conduct interviews, and make admissions decisions throughout the admissions cycle."

So "update" at a DO school can mean a coursework update inside AACOMAS, not a letter. NYITCOM says so directly: "To update your application information, please refer to AACOMAS Instructions for General & Academic Update (coursework)." WVSOM's FAQ says "Academic Update Periods through AACOMAS typically start September, December and March." Grades go through AACOMAS. A letter, where a school takes one, carries what a transcript cannot: a new role, a new result, a correction. For the AACOMAS mechanics, see what AACOMAS is and how it works.

How DO timing differs from MD: rolling offers and deposit clocks

The AACOMAS traffic guidelines tie your deposit deadline to the date you are accepted:

AcceptedDeposit window under the traffic guidelines
Before November 15Until December 14
November 15 to January 1430 days
January 15 to April 3014 days
On or after May 1"may be asked for an immediate deposit"

The page also says "prior to May 1, applicants need to withdraw from any college(s) which they do not plan to attend and only hold a position at one COM to avoid having positions withdrawn." The deposit rules in full, and what happens when you hold two seats, are in the AACOMAS traffic guidelines and DO deposits guide.

What this means for letters: at a batch MD school such as Columbia or Yale, decisions come in March, so a winter letter still reaches an open file. At a DO school with rolling offers, the decision may arrive days or weeks after the interview. A letter has to land while the file is still open: before the decision, or on a hold, alternate list or waitlist.

Pages at LECOM, A.T. Still SOMA, Rowan-Virtua, Midwestern Chicago and VCOM, fetched the same day, state rules for recommendation letters only. Des Moines, Rocky Vista, Oklahoma State and Idaho COM returned HTTP 403, so they are left out. Texas DO schools apply through TMDSAS; see Texas medical school update letter policies.

Two rows need a closer read:

  • NYITCOM is the clearest no: "NYITCOM does not accept updates or additional material(s) once you have submitted your Supplemental Application." Both campuses use the same page.
  • WVSOM gives two routes on one FAQ. It says "Be sure to submit academic and any other updates directly to AACOMAS," and then "Any additional information you wish to be considered for your file may be submitted to admissions@osteo.wvsom.edu". Our recommendation: grades and coursework through AACOMAS; one short email for a new role or result.

Hold, alternate, decision deferred: what DO schools mean

DO schools use their own words for the in-between status, and each word means something different.

  • WVSOM, "Decision Deferred": "The "decision deferred" status indicates a hold status." Its FAQ adds: "In some cases we may wish to wait for your fall grades or a subsequent MCAT score prior to making a decision." If you are deferred at WVSOM, the fastest update is the AACOMAS academic update that carries the grades they are waiting for.
  • Touro Nevada, "interview hold": "your application was evaluated by the Admission Committee but has neither been selected for an interview or rejection." It is a pre-interview status, and only AACOMAS academic updates count.
  • WesternU, alternate: "Your alternate status is for this year only and our alternates are not ranked." "An alternate may be offered a place in the class between March and August of the entering year."
  • Ohio Heritage, alternate list: one of three outcomes the day after interviews. Alternates "are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions for additional feedback and insight into the decision."
  • CHSU, waitlist: "Applicants who are placed on the Waitlist remain eligible candidates and have the potential to receive an offer of admission up to the day before COM Orientation."

For the MD side of the same vocabulary, and a table of ranked and unranked lists, see medical school hold status meaning.

One letter of intent, one DO school

A letter of intent says you will enroll if admitted. Send it to one school.

The basis is AACOMAS's own wording. Before May 1 you are expected to "only hold a position at one COM", and once you decide, you have "an obligation to promptly withdraw" everywhere else. A letter of intent to two DO schools is two promises, and AACOMAS expects you to keep only one seat.

Of the 18 pages, only WesternU's alternate page invites one: "You may also provide us with a letter of intent. Simply contact your admissions counselor and they will ensure that your application is updated." CHSU's "Letter of Intent" is a different document, the Early Decision Program commitment submitted "via CHSU's school specific page on the AACOMAS application." It is not a post-interview letter.

The countercase: if you are waiting on MD decisions too, a DO letter of intent is a promise you may break. If an MD acceptance would change your choice, write a letter of interest instead, or nothing. The letter of intent sample shows both versions.

A constructed DO update after a hold

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's letter.

Context (invented): Ananya Rao interviewed at Blue Ridge College of Osteopathic Medicine on October 14 and was placed on hold. Her school's page, like WVSOM's, asks for grades through AACOMAS and other information by email. Her fall grades went in through the December AACOMAS academic update. She emails in January.

Subject: Update from Ananya Rao, AACOMAS ID 12345678, interviewed October 14

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing with one update since my interview. My fall grades were sent through the December AACOMAS academic update, so I have not repeated them here.

In November I became evening shift lead at the Ridgeview Free Clinic intake desk. I now train new volunteers and run the closing checklist that passes unresolved referrals to the next day's nurse. Before, I took intake histories. Now I am responsible for whether a patient's question reaches someone who can answer it.

Blue Ridge's rural rotation remains the reason I applied.

Thank you for your continued review.

Ananya Rao

The letter body, between the greeting and the signed name, runs 95 words. What it does:

  • It names the one new fact (shift lead) and what changed in her work, which is the part a reader can use.
  • It does not resend grades. They went through AACOMAS, the route the school asked for.
  • It makes no promise. One sentence of interest, no "first choice", no intent, because in this invented case she is still waiting on two other schools.

Thank-you notes at DO schools

AACOM's admissions interview page says: "Follow up with the medical college by writing a hand written thank you for the interview highlighting anything that stood out to you on the interview." None of the 18 school pages above names a thank-you route. Send it to the admissions office unless your interview-day instructions name someone else. A thank-you note is not an update: put the new fact in its own message. The interview thank-you email guide has short examples.

Questions about DO school update letters

Do DO schools read letters of intent?

Only one of the 18 pages we checked invites one: WesternU, for alternates, through the admissions counselor. NYITCOM accepts nothing after the supplemental. Touro Nevada accepts only AACOMAS coursework updates.

Can I send a letter of intent to more than one DO school?

No. A letter of intent says you will enroll. AACOMAS expects you to hold one seat before May 1 and to withdraw from other schools once you decide.

What should I send if I am on hold at a DO school?

Read the school's definition first. At WVSOM a deferred file may be waiting on fall grades or an MCAT score, so the AACOMAS academic update is the update. Send a letter only where the page names an email or counselor route.

How long after a DO interview do you hear back?

From the day after (Ohio Heritage) to about two months (Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York), on the pages that state a window. WesternU posts decisions 30 days after the interview. The post-interview timeline page compares MD and DO windows.

Are DO update letters different from MD update letters?

The letter is the same. The route differs: at the DO schools in our table that address grades, they go through AACOMAS, and NYITCOM and Touro Nevada take nothing else. For MD school rules, see which medical schools accept update letters.
