JD/MBA Programs: T14 and M7 Applications Compared

Top JD/MBA programs split into two groups. Four schools offer a three-year track: Penn/Wharton, Chicago/Booth, Northwestern/Kellogg and Columbia. Most others take four years and require two separate admissions. The test you need, and the essay that carries your "why both" argument, depend on which group you are applying to.

We read the official JD/MBA pages for 13 of the 14 law schools usually called the T14, including the joint programs with six of the seven M7 business schools. They differ on three questions: how many years, how many admissions decisions, and whether the LSAT is enough. Mix up the answers and you can end up applying on the wrong test, in the wrong round, or to the wrong program.

The programs, side by side

All read on each program's official page on 2026-09-24. "Separate" means you must be admitted by each school on its own.

Not in the table: Michigan. Its law and Ross pages refused our requests when we checked, so we left it out rather than guess. Cornell's page confirms two separate applications but publishes neither a program length nor a test rule, so its row says so. MIT Sloan is the M7 school without a row. We did not find an MIT Sloan JD/MBA page to verify.

Three patterns worth knowing

1. The integrated three-year programs are GMAT/GRE-first, with one exception. Penn, Northwestern and Columbia's three-year track all require a GMAT or GRE through the business-school application, and none of them requires the LSAT. Columbia says an LSAT cannot be your only score, and Penn says an LSAT-taker "must also take the GRE or the GMAT." Chicago is the exception: a GRE, GMAT or LSAT satisfies it. If you already have a strong LSAT and do not want to take another test, Chicago is the only three-year program in this table that accepts it alone.

2. "One application" does not mean one reader. NYU uses a joint application but evaluates it "independently by each school," and it requires a law school admit first. Chicago and Penn make one joint decision. Northwestern's decision is "only for the joint degree program," though Kellogg notes an exception if a secondary Kellogg program is marked in the application. Read the decision sentence, not just the application sentence.

3. The four-year programs reward independent strength. Darden says your dual-degree candidacy "will not be considered." At Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Duke, Berkeley, Georgetown and Cornell you must clear two separate bars. Each application has to stand on its own: a law school statement that makes sense to a law reader and business essays that make sense to an MBA reader.

Folklore to drop

• "You need the LSAT for any JD." Not for these joint routes. Penn, Northwestern and Columbia's three-year program run on the GMAT or GRE. If you already hold an LSAT score, read the GRE-after-LSAT rules before assuming you can hide it. Chicago, for example, says any existing LSAT "you are required to provide."
• "All JD/MBAs are four years." Four schools in this table publish a three-year route.
• "A joint application doubles your chances." Northwestern says candidates "will not be admitted to only one program" unless a secondary Kellogg program is noted. Penn says you "cannot switch to the other degree programs" once you submit.
• "The official page is always current." When we read it, Wharton's JD/MBA requirements text still carried 2023–24 dates for its Early Decision rounds. Confirm this cycle's dates inside the live application.

Is the extra year worth it? A decision procedure

We make no salary or return claims. The question is whether a second degree solves a problem you can name.

1. Write down the job and the task that needs both degrees. For example, a deal lawyer who has to price the business, or an operator who has to read the regulatory exposure. If you cannot name a task where one degree falls short, a JD or an MBA alone is the cheaper test of the idea.
2. Do the arithmetic. A JD alone takes three years and an MBA alone usually two. A three-year JD/MBA adds no years to the JD. A four-year program adds one year to the JD and two to the MBA. Duke's 3.5-year option sits in between.
3. Pick your test once. GMAT or GRE opens the Penn, Northwestern and Columbia three-year routes. LSAT alone opens Chicago's joint route and the law side of the separate programs. See the GRE vs GMAT page for how business schools treat the two.
4. Count the applications and rounds. Three-year programs follow business-school rounds: Chicago's Round 2 is January 7, 2027, and Kellogg's JD-MBA page lists Round 2 as January 6, 2027. Four-year programs mean two complete files on two calendars.
5. Write the "why both" argument once, then place it where each school tells you to. Stanford points you to "Why Stanford for you?" Penn asks that its essays address the JD/MBA. Kellogg adds a law supplement. In separate-admission programs, your law statement still has to work for a law reader who never sees your MBA essays.

Match the writing to the school

FAQ

Which JD/MBA programs take three years?

Among the programs we checked, Penn Carey Law with Wharton, Chicago Law with Booth, Northwestern Pritzker with Kellogg, and Columbia's three-year track. Duke says some students finish in three and a half years. Harvard, Stanford, Yale, NYU, Berkeley, UVA and Columbia's four-year track are four-year programs.

Do I need the LSAT for a JD/MBA?

Not for Penn's, Northwestern's or Columbia's three-year program, which use the GMAT or GRE. Chicago accepts the GRE, GMAT or LSAT. Separate-admission programs follow each school's own test rules.

Can I apply to a JD/MBA and the MBA alone in the same year?

Not at Penn, which says you may not apply to the Carey JD/MBA "and simultaneously apply individually" to Wharton or Penn Carey Law in the same cycle. Other schools set their own rules, so check each one.

Can I add the MBA after starting law school?

Often, yes. Stanford, Yale, NYU, Cornell, Columbia's four-year track and Chicago all describe routes for current law students, each with its own timing limits.
