MIT vs Stanford vs Georgia Tech — AI Policies Compared

America's elite tech and engineering schools have spent the last three years pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into AI research. They built the language models. They train the researchers. They host the conferences where the next generation of generative systems gets argued into existence.

Most of them have not gotten around to writing down whether you're allowed to use AI in your admissions essay.

We looked at the 13 universities in our 174-school AI policies dataset whose names include "Institute of Technology," "Polytechnic," "Tech," or "Mines." Five of them — Georgia Tech, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Olin College of Engineering, and Colorado School of Mines — have published explicit AI admissions guidance. The other eight are completely silent: no permission level, no disclosure requirement, no enforcement statement. That's MIT, Stanford, Virginia Tech, RPI, RIT, NJIT, Stevens, and WPI.

It is a strange map of who decided to say something.

The 13 tech-named flagships at a glance

Five of thirteen. Thirty-eight percent. The schools that spend the most time thinking about AI as a research subject are, on average, the schools least likely to put an AI policy in front of their applicants.

It would be one thing if UT Austin — Texas's elite engineering flagship, even though it doesn't carry "Tech" in its name — broke the pattern. It doesn't. UT Austin is also L0/D0/E0. The pattern is real.

The 5 schools that wrote policies

Georgia Tech — the first mover, still the most thorough

Georgia Tech holds the earliest dated AI admissions policy quote in our entire dataset: Rick Clark's July 27, 2023 blog post "Seniors, Can We ChatGPT?". Eight months after ChatGPT-3.5 launched, while the rest of the admissions world was still figuring out whether to acknowledge generative AI exists, Clark's office wrote:

"AI tools can be powerful and valuable in the application process when used thoughtfully."

"You should not copy and paste content you did not create directly into your application."

The line has held. A September 10, 2025 follow-up post reaffirms the same posture: "You may lean on ChatGPT for brainstorming or initial idea generation, but your voice, your thoughts, style and convictions." GT also scores highest in our dataset on thoroughness — measured as the count of allowed uses + disallowed uses + source quotes — and is the only tech-named flagship in the top 5. Notable: GT is L2/D0/E0. The permissive stance comes with no paperwork — which is unusual.

Caltech — permit + attestation

Caltech is the only tech-flagship that pairs permission with formal disclosure. It is L2/D3/E1: line-level AI editing is allowed, but applicants must affirm they have reviewed Caltech's "Ethical Use of AI Guidelines" before submitting. The consequence is explicit:

"Failure to comply with the Ethical Use of AI guidelines may result in the rescission of your admission to Caltech." — Caltech Admissions

"Your essays are where we hear your voice — overuse of AI will diminish your individual, bold, creative identity as a prospective Techer."

Allowed: grammar/spelling tools (Grammarly, Microsoft Editor), AI-generated brainstorming questions, research on the application process. Disallowed: copying from AI generators, using AI to outline or draft essays, and notably, translating essays from another language with AI. The graduate school adds: "The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to generate text for essays is not acceptable."

Carnegie Mellon — concise L2, watch the graduate programs

CMU's central admissions FAQ is short:

"AI should never replace your unique voice, experiences and personal expression."

"Should only serve as a supplementary tool to enhance your writing." — CMU Admission FAQ

The university-level posture is L2/D0/E0. The wrinkle is at the graduate level: both Heinz College and the Entertainment Technology Center publish AI-specific bans. Heinz: "You should not use artificial intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, to write any portion of your essay." ETC: "Do not use ChatGPT or any other AI tools to generate responses." Heinz adds that AI-generated material "may result in automatic denial of admission" (L4/E2). Note the irony: CMU's AI Management masters explicitly bans applicants from using AI to write its essay.

Olin — the "trusted adult" frame

Olin (L2/D0/E0) gives applicants a useful heuristic on its admissions process page and FAQ:

"Copying and pasting directly from an AI generator is not permitted."

"Consider how a parent, teacher, counselor, or other trusted adult might support you in writing your college application essays."

The implicit rule: AI is fine for what a trusted adult would do for you (proofread, brainstorm, talk through structure). It is not fine for what a trusted adult shouldn't do for you (write paragraphs, replace your voice, generate experiences).

Colorado School of Mines — genAI as collaborator

Mines (L2/D0/E0) published the most enthusiastic framing of the five. Its admissions considerations page, updated 2025-08-01, calls AI a "helpful collaborator":

"We encourage you to utilize genAI tools to brainstorm, edit, and refine your ideas."

"Please do not copy and paste content you have not created directly into your application."

Same posture as GT, CMU, and Olin. The interesting move is rhetorical: Mines actively encourages AI for ideation rather than warning students off it. Most policies frame AI as a risk to manage. Mines frames it as a tool to pick up.

The 8 silent ones

The other eight tech-flagships have published no AI-specific admissions policy. We checked the actual pages.

MIT

MIT's essays page describes what good essays look like without ever using the word AI or ChatGPT — we verified the page in May 2026, no AI-related language is present. The only MIT unit with an explicit AI policy is the Chemistry graduate FAQ: "You are free to utilize AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) in the preparation of your statement of objectives."

That's the entirety of MIT's published AI admissions guidance — one department, for graduate applicants. MIT Sloan's MBA admissions has nothing. Central graduate admissions has nothing. Undergraduate admissions has nothing. The institution that gave the world Norbert Wiener, Marvin Minsky, and CSAIL has fewer published AI admissions rules than Colorado School of Mines.

Stanford

We confirmed in May 2026 that Stanford's undergraduate apply page does not mention AI, ChatGPT, or generative tools. What it says is general: "The essays are your chance to tell us about yourself in your own words."

Stanford's program-level rules are louder than the central policy. The Graduate School of Business is L4 for both MBA and MSx:

"It is improper and a violation of the terms of this application process to have another person or tool write your essays." — Stanford GSB MBA essays

The School of Humanities and Sciences offers a soft caution in its grad-school guide: "Think very carefully about the use of generative AI bots." Stanford's January 2025 AI Advisory Committee report acknowledged admissions "may require more guidance and additional policies" — institutional speak for "we have not written this down yet." More than a year later, the central policy still hasn't materialized.

Virginia Tech, RPI, RIT, NJIT, Stevens, WPI

Virginia Tech's admissions site has no AI-specific policy. L0/D0/E0. Applicants to one of the largest engineering programs in the United States get no published guidance on whether they may use ChatGPT to brainstorm an essay topic.

The other five — Rensselaer Polytechnic, Rochester Institute of Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute — are all L0/D0/E0 as well. The operative rule for applicants to any of these schools is the Common Application's fraud certification, not anything the school itself has written.

The L2 convergence pattern

Look at the column of L/D/E ratings for the 5 schools with policies and the same number jumps out: L2, L2, L2, L2, L2.

Every tech-named flagship that bothered to write a policy landed on the same permission level. Line-level editing allowed. Drafting and copy-pasting prohibited. None went L1 (fully permissive). None went L4 (banned). None even went L3 (brainstorming-only).

This matters because the broader landscape is not uniformly L2. Among the 52 schools in our dataset with any explicit permission level, ~42% sit at L3 or L4 (restrictive or banned). The Ivy League is fragmented: Yale, Penn, and Columbia at L2; Cornell and Dartmouth at L3; Brown and Harvard at L4; Princeton at L0 with active enforcement. Religious-affiliated schools cluster at L4. The tech-flagships did not.

Among schools whose names say "we are about technology and engineering," every one that took a public position decided that line-level AI editing is fine. That's a cultural signal worth reading: the schools whose graduates are most likely to ship AI products are also the schools most comfortable saying applicants may use these tools to polish their writing, as long as the writing is theirs. The schools that did not take a position do not contradict the signal — they just decline to participate in it.

Why might tech schools be slower?

A few plausible explanations for the silence:

  • Research-heavy faculty cultures. Tech schools are run by researchers who tend to view AI as a tool, not a threat. Writing a rule that says "do not use this tool" cuts against the institutional grain.
  • Decentralization. MIT and Stanford are federations of schools and departments. The Chemistry department at MIT and the Graduate School of Business at Stanford both have AI rules; their central admissions offices have not.
  • The Common App backstop. Eleven of the 13 tech-named schools accept the Common Application, whose fraud certification already treats AI-generated content as fraud. A school may reasonably conclude there is no need to publish a redundant policy. (See our take on the admissions vs. classroom policy gap.)
  • Legal caution. Stanford's January 2025 AI Advisory Committee explicitly acknowledged admissions was an open question. Large universities with cautious general counsels move slowly on putting AI rules in writing.

None of this lets MIT, Stanford, or Virginia Tech off the hook for clarity. But it explains why "tech school" and "fast on policy" don't correlate the way you might guess.

What to do as an applicant

For the 5 policied tech-flagships, follow what they've written:

  • Georgia Tech: brainstorm and line-level edit freely; don't copy-paste; no disclosure required.
  • Caltech: same permission as GT, plus review the ethical-use guidelines, don't translate from another language with AI, and understand non-compliance is a rescission risk.
  • CMU: line-level editing for undergrad. Heinz College and ETC graduate programs ban AI outright — including the AI Management masters.
  • Olin and Mines: use AI the way a trusted adult would help you. Don't copy-paste.

For the 8 silent tech-flagships (MIT, Stanford, Virginia Tech, RPI, RIT, NJIT, Stevens, WPI), the operative rule is the Common Application's fraud certification, which explicitly treats "submitting the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform" as application fraud. Two program-level overlays: Stanford's GSB MBA and MSx explicitly ban AI in essays. MIT's Chemistry graduate program explicitly permits AI in statements of objectives. Every other MIT and Stanford program falls back to the Common App floor.

Practically, every published tech-school policy lands on L2 — "line-level editing is fine, drafting is not." Assume the silent schools would land in roughly the same place if pressed. Do not assume they wouldn't enforce the Common App fraud certification if they chose to.

What this means

A real version of the AI-in-admissions conversation would have MIT, Stanford, and Virginia Tech in it. Right now, those three institutions are not in the conversation except by absence.

That absence is informative. It tells you which schools have publicly worked through their own position (Georgia Tech, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Olin, Colorado School of Mines) and which have not. It tells you that the schools building the technology and the schools writing rules about its use in their admissions process are largely not the same schools. And it tells you that if you want to know whether the country's most prestigious engineering institutions are going to flag your essay for AI use, you can't find out from their admissions pages — you can find out from the Common App's fraud language, which they all defer to, even if they would never put that backstop in writing themselves.
