NUS, NTU and SMU Master's Personal Statement
NUS, NTU and SMU master's personal statement: NTU's central checklist has no SOP, the NUS pages we opened differ by programme, and how to check SMU.
NUS, NTU and SMU Master's Personal Statement
NTU Singapore's university-wide coursework checklist for AY2027-28 has no statement of purpose or personal statement in it. The NUS pages we could open set requirements programme by programme, and one NUS programme used its own personal statement form. So in Singapore, the question is not "how long is the statement" but "does my programme ask for one, and where".
Before you trust any answer about these schools, check three things: the level (master's, not undergraduate), the document, and which NTU. Every NTU and NUS page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. SMU's admissions pages and the NUS Graduate School pages returned a bot check to our requests that day, so we quote nothing from them; see the SMU section for what to do instead.
NTU Singapore is not Nottingham Trent
Two universities use the initials NTU: Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (ntu.edu.sg) and Nottingham Trent University in the UK. If a search result gives you an NTU character limit, check the domain before you trust it. We could not open the UK university's personal statement page on 31 October 2026 (it returned HTTP 403), so we do not quote its rules here.
Here is what NTU Singapore's own coursework admission guide lists under "General Information on Supporting Documents":
- Passport or NRIC
- One recent passport-sized colour photograph
- Valid TOEFL/IELTS/GRE/GMAT scores
- Degree certificate and official transcripts, each in the original language plus an official English translation, and the "Grading or marking scale of the Transcript"
- "Other Supporting documents (if applicable)": "Referee Report (For applications to RSIS and Master of Media & Communication Programmes)" and "Resume"
There is no statement on that list. Three more rules from the same guide:
- "Programmes under Nanyang Business School (NBS) and National Institute of Education (NIE) have a separate application process."
- "Applicants has to use the same application number if applying for more than one programme in the same intake (i.e. August intake)."
- "Documents uploaded must be in English. Otherwise, they must be accompanied by certified translations in English language."
NTU's older list of supporting documents (marked "Updated 25 Oct 2019") also has no statement. It says: "There is no fixed standard format for reference letters." And it warns that for NBS and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), "there may be extra documents required by these schools. Please follow the requirements listed in the School's website."
Our view: if you are applying to an NTU school other than NBS, NIE or RSIS, do not write a statement until the portal or the school's page asks for one. Spend the time on the two documents NTU does list that carry your argument: the resume and a transcript with its grading scale. Whether NTU reads an unrequested statement is not published, so treat it as unknown.
The countercase: if your school's programme page asks for a statement or essay, that page wins over the central list. The central list is a floor, not a ceiling.
NUS: programme-level statements
We could not open NUS's central admissions pages, so we cannot say whether NUS sets a university-wide statement rule. What we could verify at programme level:
- NUS Master of Computing (General Track) publishes its admission criteria and test minimums but no statement limit. It says the programme "is suitable for applicants with non-computing degrees" and that "preference will be given to applicants with IT related job experiences" (MComp General Track admissions). If the application asks for a statement, that preference tells you what it should prove: your IT work.
- NUS Master of Clinical Investigation (2022 intake, historical) asked for its own "MCI Personal Statement" form, plus a "Recommendation & Statement of Support from Applicant's Head of Department" (MCI instructions, 2022 intake). This is an old cycle. We cite it only to show that NUS programmes can set their own forms. Do not treat it as current.
We could not open the NUS Graduate School admissions page for research degrees on 31 October 2026, so we do not state its requirements here.
The MComp page also carries a rule on agents: "Applicants who apply through agents will not have any added advantage in gaining admission and the University reserves the right to reject such applications without giving reasons." That is NUS's published position. Read it before you hand your application to anyone.
SMU: verify on the programme page
We could not open SMU's admissions pages on 31 October 2026. So we quote no SMU prompt, limit or deadline. We also do not repeat SMU questions from third-party sites, because we cannot check them against SMU's current page. For SMU, use this procedure:
- Open the programme's own page on
smu.edu.sgand find its admissions or "how to apply" section. - Copy the essay question text and its limit into your notes, with the date you copied it.
- If the page lists more than one question, give each its own draft and count each separately.
- If the page states no limit, ask the programme office before you write.
What to write for each
This table uses only what the pages we opened say. "Not verified" means we could not open the page.
| Programme or school | Statement in the published list? | Referees | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| NTU, most coursework schools | No | Only RSIS and Master of Media & Communication | 31 October 2026 |
| NTU NBS and NIE | Separate process; see the school | See the school | 31 October 2026 |
| NUS MComp (General Track) | Not listed on the admissions page; no limit published | Not stated on the page | 31 October 2026 |
| NUS MCI (2022 intake) | Own "MCI Personal Statement" form (historical) | Head of department support statement | 31 October 2026 |
| SMU master's | Not verified | Not verified | Bot check on 31 October 2026 |
The why-Singapore paragraph: keep it to one clause
If a Singapore form gives you a short text field, there is no room for a separate paragraph about the country. GradPilot's character-limited text-box rubric is built on the same point.
Our view: in a Singapore form, "why Singapore" is one clause attached to your career sentence, not a paragraph. Write the job first, then the place.
- Weak (constructed): "Singapore is a global hub of innovation and a gateway to Southeast Asia, making it the ideal place for my studies."
- Better (constructed): "After the degree I plan to work as a data engineer for a Southeast Asian payments company, which is why I am applying to a programme in Singapore rather than in Europe."
Run the swap test from our CUHK why-Hong-Kong guide: replace "Singapore" with "Hong Kong". If the sentence still reads fine, it says nothing. The weak line survives the swap, which is the problem. The better line stops making sense, because the Southeast Asian job is the reason for Singapore.
The countercase: if a programme asks a direct "why this programme" question with a long limit, answer it fully, with courses and a career plan. Our guide to career goals in an SOP for international students covers naming a role.
Constructed example: where your case goes when NTU asks for no statement
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's documents. Context (invented): Putri Lestari has a BSc in Statistics from a university in Bandung and two years as a data analyst at a retail chain. She is applying to an NTU MSc in a school whose list has no statement. Her case has to live in the resume and the transcript.
Before, a resume line (11 words):
Data Analyst, retail company. Responsible for reports and dashboards for management.
After, two resume lines (42 words):
Data Analyst, 120-store retail chain, Jakarta (2024–2026). Built the weekly stock-out forecast in Python used by 14 regional managers; cut manual reporting from two days to three hours.
Final-year thesis: demand forecasting with ARIMA and gradient boosting (grade A; scale on transcript).
Why it works:
- It does the statement's job. The lines show preparation (Python, forecasting, a thesis) and results a reader can check in an interview.
- It points to the grading scale. NTU requires the "Grading or marking scale of the Transcript". The note "scale on transcript" tells the reader where to look.
- It fits the document NTU actually lists. No statement was invented to carry it.
If the same applicant also applies to an NUS or SMU programme that asks for a statement, these two lines become the evidence paragraph. Keep the numbers identical in both documents.
Questions about Singapore master's statements
When do NTU coursework applications close?
It depends on the school. For the AY2027-28 August intake, NTU's table gives, for example, 1 September to 15 February for the MSc in Psychology, 1 September to 31 January for the MSc in Applied Economics, and 1 October to 1 February for the School of Humanities. For the wider calendar, see the 2027 master's timeline for UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Does NTU accept the new TOEFL score scale?
Yes. NTU's guide says: "Applicants may submit TOEFL iBT scores reported on either the previous scale (0–120) or the new 1–6 scale." If your degree was taught in English, see TOEFL waivers for English-medium degrees for how the proof works elsewhere.
What format should an NTU reference letter use?
NTU's 2019 list says: "There is no fixed standard format for reference letters." Referee reports are listed only for RSIS and the Master of Media & Communication.
Can I use one statement for Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK?
Reuse the evidence, not the file. Limits and formats differ. See one personal statement for UK, Hong Kong and Singapore. If English is your second language, keep sentences short; our simple English SOP guide shows how.
Get a free review of your personal statement
Get a free Quick Review of your personal statement against GradPilot's general MS statement of purpose rubric, the closest rubric for an NUS, NTU or SMU master's statement. It reads for programme fit, evidence of preparedness, tailoring to this programme, and the link between your past work and your career plan. If your form gives you a short text box, use the character-limited SOP rubric instead and paste the box's limit with the draft. More guides are on the graduate school essays hub and the graduate SOP review page.
