CUHK Master's Personal Statement and Why Hong Kong

CUHK master's personal statement: Business School asks for one, CSE and SEEM list none, and a why-Hong-Kong line that names the course, not the city.

CUHK Master's Personal Statement and Why Hong Kong

CUHK does not set one personal statement rule for taught master's programmes. The Graduate School's document list has no statement line. CUHK Business School master's ask applicants to "Submit personal statement and curriculum vitae". The MSc Computer Science and MSc SEEM pages list no statement at all.

So the first job is to find out whether your programme asks. If it does, the "why Hong Kong" paragraph is where most drafts go generic, and that is the part this page fixes. Every CUHK page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Programmes update their pages for each intake, so recheck yours before you submit.

How CUHK handles your application

Four rules from CUHK's own pages shape what you write:

  • One application per programme. CUHK's FAQ: "You can apply for multiple programmes, but you must submit separate applications and pay the application fees for each programme." It adds: "If admitted to multiple programmes, you can only enrol in one" (CUHK Graduate School FAQs).
  • Two referees for taught programmes. The documents page says: "Research doctoral: Three referee reports are required." and "Other programmes: Two referee reports are required." (Documents Required). Applying for a CUHK PhD with the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship instead? Our guide to the HKPFS research proposal and personal statement covers that application.
  • Two portals. "All Master's programmes in Faculty of Business Administration (except PhD and MPhil)" use apply.bschool.cuhk.edu.hk; most other programmes use the Graduate School's online application system (How to Apply).
  • Applications opened on 1 September 2026, and deadlines vary by programme.

Here is what three programme pages ask for. We list only what each page says.

ProgrammePersonal statementRefereesDeadline stated
Business School master's (all)"Submit personal statement and curriculum vitae""Obtain 2 referees"Full-time normal round 31 March 2027; rolling
MSc Computer ScienceNot in the document list"Confidential recommendations from 2 referees (optional)"31 January 2027
MSc SEEMNot in the procedureNot stated on the page16 March 2027; rolling

Two things in that table change your plan:

  1. The CS page calls referees optional, while the Graduate School page says two are required for taught programmes. When a programme page and a university page differ, ask the programme office which one applies, in writing, before the deadline.
  2. Business School admissions are rolling. Its page says: "Admissions will be processed on a rolling basis until all places have been filled. Therefore, early applications are strongly encouraged. The application deadline may be closed early if places are no longer available." Under that rule, an application sent in March may be competing for fewer remaining places than one sent in November.

Our view: if your programme does not ask for a statement and the upload screen has no slot for one, do not send one. Put the effort into your two referees and your CV. CUHK does not publish whether an unrequested statement is read, so that part is unknown.

The countercase: if you are a career changer or have a gap that your transcript cannot explain, ask the programme office whether you may add a short explanatory note. Ask first; do not assume.

We could not open HKUST's or CityU's admissions pages on 31 October 2026 (both returned a bot check to our requests), so we quote nothing from them. For any Hong Kong programme, the rule is the same: open the programme's own requirements page and the upload screen, and write to what they list.

Writing "why Hong Kong" without the template

Here is the problem in one fact. CUHK Business School's own international-student page describes Hong Kong as "a thriving international business centre, where East meets West". Its MSc in Business Analytics page calls Hong Kong "a global centre of finance and logistics" (MSc Business Analytics).

If your why-Hong-Kong paragraph says the same thing, you have told the school its own brochure. It proves nothing about you.

Our view: a why-Hong-Kong paragraph earns its place only when it passes three tests.

  1. Course test. It names something in the programme's published curriculum. For the MSc in Business Analytics, that might be the courses the page lists, such as "statistical analysis, decision models and applications, data mining for managers, economic analytics, operation analytics".
  2. Career test. It names the job you will do after the degree, and the kind of employer. "A career in finance" fails. "A demand-planning analyst at a freight forwarder" passes.
  3. Swap test. Replace "Hong Kong" with "Singapore" and "CUHK" with "NUS". If the paragraph still reads correctly, it is a template. Cut it, or add the detail that only fits this programme.

The countercase: if the programme gives you a short form field rather than a full statement, you may not have room for a separate paragraph. Then one clause is enough, joined to your career sentence. Our guide to SOP text box limits covers that format, and the NUS, NTU and SMU master's personal statement guide shows the one-clause version for Singapore.

Phrases to delete on sight, because they fail the swap test:

  • "Asia's world city", "where East meets West", "a bridge between China and the world"
  • "a global financial hub" with nothing after it
  • "a world-class university with a strong reputation"
  • "the vibrant, multicultural environment"

The same problem shows up in US statements. Our guide to why an SOP sounds like a filled-in template explains the pattern in more detail.

Constructed example: a CUHK MSc paragraph rebuilt

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Nguyen Thi Mai has a BBA from a university in Ho Chi Minh City and two years in operations at a freight forwarder. She is applying to CUHK's MSc in Business Analytics, whose application asks for a personal statement and CV.

Before (template, 73 words):

I have always dreamed of studying in Hong Kong. As Asia's world city, where East meets West, Hong Kong is the perfect place to study business analytics. CUHK is a world-class university with an excellent reputation, and its MSc in Business Analytics will give me the skills I need for a successful career in finance or consulting. I believe the vibrant environment of Hong Kong will help me grow both personally and professionally.

After (specific, 109 words):

At my company I build the weekly container forecast for our Vietnam to South China lanes in a spreadsheet, and last quarter it missed by an average of 18 percent. I want to fix that properly. CUHK's MSc in Business Analytics lists operation analytics, decision models and applications, and data mining for managers, which are the three tools my forecast lacks. After the degree I plan to work as a demand-planning analyst for a freight forwarder's regional planning team. I want that team to be one that covers both South China and Vietnam, because that is the lane I already know, and I would bring it to class projects.

Why the rebuild works:

  • Course test: it names three courses the programme page lists.
  • Career test: it names a role and an employer type.
  • Swap test: put "NUS" in place of "CUHK" and the course list is wrong, so the paragraph no longer fits. That is the point.
  • Evidence: the 18 percent miss is a fact about her own work that an interviewer can ask about. (It is invented for this example.) CUHK Business School says shortlisted applicants "may be invited to attend an interview", so expect the question.

What we cut: "always dreamed", "world-class", "vibrant", and the claim about finance or consulting, which did not match her logistics background. Our guide to career goals in an SOP for international students explains how to name a role precisely.

Chinese or English?

Write the statement in English. The rules point that way:

  • CUHK: "Non-English/Chinese transcripts require certified English translation." So CUHK accepts transcripts in Chinese, but it says nothing that makes a Chinese statement acceptable.
  • CUHK MSc Business Analytics: "Courses are taught in English, except when Chinese is preferable."
  • HKU's checklists ask for a certified English translation of documents not in English. See our guide to the HKU taught master's personal statement for the HKU rules.

Our view: submit a Chinese statement only if the programme is taught in Chinese and its page says a Chinese statement is accepted. If your English is the worry, keep sentences short. Our simple English SOP guide for non-native writers shows how.

Questions about Hong Kong master's statements

If you are shortlisted, Hong Kong master's interview questions turns each part of this statement into a question to prepare.

Can I use the same statement for HKU and CUHK?

Reuse the core, not the file. Both universities treat each programme as a separate application. Keep your background and evidence paragraphs. Rewrite the why-this-programme paragraph, run the swap test, and remove the other university's name. If you are also applying to UK or Singapore programmes, see one personal statement for UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Can my employer be one of my two referees?

CUHK's general documents page asks for referee reports but does not say who qualifies. Programme rules differ. For comparison, HKU Business School requires at least one academic referee from your university. Check your CUHK programme's page or ask its office.

When do CUHK programmes make offers?

The MSc Computer Science FAQ says: "Admission offers are normally made in the period from November to May." It also says: "Applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful if they do not hear from us thereafter." For dates across Hong Kong, the UK and Singapore, see the 2027 master's timeline for UK, Hong Kong and Singapore.

What does CUHK say about honesty in the application?

The documents page says: "Applicants are required to provide true, accurate and complete information in support of their applications. Any misrepresentation in the documents and information provided will result in disqualification of their applications and subsequent enrolments in the University." If a school publishes no AI rule, the certification inside the application is what you sign, so read it there.
