Letters After a UK or Canadian Medicine Interview
Can you email a UK or Canadian medical school after interview? What Newcastle, UCAS, Queen's, Ottawa and Toronto publish, and the one message to send.
Letters After a UK or Canadian Medicine Interview
None of the UK or Canadian medical school pages we checked publishes a route for a thank-you note, update letter or letter of intent after the interview. Queen's says "Addendums or supplemental materials sent directly to the School of Medicine … will not be considered." The one message worth sending is a factual change the school needs, through the channel it names.
Some US schools publish that they accept letters after the interview. The UK and Canadian schools below describe something else: an interview scored on the day, a ranked list, and decisions sent through UCAS or by email in May. A letter has no step in that process to land in.
Every page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. If a school you hold an interview with publishes a different rule, its rule wins.
What the schools say
| School | What its page says | What it means for a letter |
|---|---|---|
| Queen's | "Addendums or supplemental materials sent directly to the School of Medicine, or incomplete applications will not be considered." Applicants and their contacts "are not to contact the Dean" or other named deans "regarding the application process or their application" | A letter is not considered, and writing to a dean is "a breach of professionalism" |
| Ottawa | Candidates "must not contact the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Vice-Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education or the Vice-Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, directly or indirectly regarding the application process or an individual's application." Ranking is "based primarily on interview performance" | No letter to senior officials; the interview sets your place |
| Toronto | "We are not able to provide status information on your application." "We do not provide personalized feedback on applications." Contact changes go "through OMSAS" | No status replies; update your details in OMSAS |
| McMaster | "we regret that we are unable to provide individualized feedback regarding the assessment of your file. Admissions decisions are final." | Nothing to write to before the May decision |
| Western | "Wait list details are confidential. Ranked position of candidates will not be released." A decision review is possible only "based on new and significant information" | Write only after a decision, and only with new information |
| NOSM | Offers rest on "the pre-interview score (approx. 32%)" and "the interview score (approx. 68%)" | The interview carries about two-thirds of the offer weight; a letter is not a listed input |
| Newcastle | "Selectors will not convey their scores to the applicants at the time of the interview or at any time thereafter." It "will not enter into discussions relating to the professional judgement underlying the scoring at interview." | Scores are not shared or discussed afterwards; a letter has no listed role |
| UCAS | "after you've attended, they'll tell us when they've made a decision and we'll let you know." | UK decisions arrive through UCAS, not in reply to an email |
Newcastle's 2027 policy also says "Selectors will not have access to the applicant's personal statement or reference, either prior to and during an interview." A thank-you note that recalls your statement is aimed at a document the selectors never saw.
Why US letter advice does not transfer
Some US schools publish that they log new material after the interview; our table of medical schools that accept update letters lists them, and the US medical school interview thank-you email page covers that etiquette. The Canadian pages above describe ranking from scores: Ottawa ranks "based primarily on interview performance", NOSM weights the interview at about 68%, and Queen's makes offers "based on a ranked list".
Our view: after a UK or Canadian medicine interview, send nothing unless a fact has changed or the school asked you for something. A thank-you or letter of intent has no published route, and at Queen's and Ottawa a message to the wrong official is a professionalism issue. The countercase: if you also interviewed at US schools, their rules differ and some do read letters; follow each US school's own page. And if a UK or Canadian school you interviewed with publishes an invitation for updates, follow it. We found none among the pages above.
What you can send, and where it goes
These are the messages the pages above give a route for.
| Situation | Where it goes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address or phone number changed | Update it in OMSAS; Toronto says "Updates cannot be made through the Enrolment Services office" | Toronto |
| You cannot attend your interview date | Toronto: "email md.applicants@utoronto.ca with any conflicts". UCAS: "let the university or college know as soon as possible" | Toronto, UCAS |
| You need an accommodation | NOSM and McMaster: in writing "at least one (1) month prior to the first interview date" (NOSM wording) | NOSM |
| You hold a Newcastle offer and are appealing an A level grade | "must inform the University no later than 31st August" | Newcastle |
| You may be unreachable while on Western's waitlist | Name an "Authorized Contact to receive information and/or to speak on their behalf" | Western FAQ |
| You think a McMaster decision is wrong | "within one week of receiving the decision, request a review by writing to the MD Admission Office" | McMaster |
| You want feedback after a Newcastle rejection | "Feedback will be given to unsuccessful applicants upon request", but not "until the end of the admissions cycle" | Newcastle |

Constructed example: an email reporting an A level re-mark
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant email. Context (invented): a home applicant holds a Newcastle MBBS offer, missed one grade, and has asked for a re-mark. The policy's deadline is quoted in the table above. The email is 87 words, subject line included.
Subject: A100 offer holder, A level re-mark request, UCAS ID 123-456-7890
Dear MBBS Admissions Team,
I hold a conditional offer for A100 Medicine. My Chemistry result was one grade below my offer, and my school has requested a re-mark from the exam board. Your 2027 admissions policy asks offer holders who are appealing an A level grade to tell you before the end of August, so I am letting you know now. I will forward the outcome as soon as I receive it.
Kind regards, Brennagh Doyle
What the email does: it names the offer, the fact that changed, the policy line it responds to, and the next step. It asks for nothing the policy does not offer, and it does not mention the interview.
If you already sent a thank-you
Stop there. None of the pages we checked says what happens to a thank-you note, so we cannot tell you it helped or hurt. Do not send a second message to ask whether the first arrived. At Queen's and Ottawa, never write to the deans their pages name. If you want to say thank you, saying it at the end of the interview is enough.
Questions about contacting a medical school after interview
Can I email a UK medical school after my interview?
You can, but nothing on the pages we checked tells you a thank-you or update will be read as part of selection. Newcastle says selectors will not convey scores "at any time thereafter", and UCAS sends the decision. Email only for a fact the school needs, such as a date conflict or an exam appeal.
Should I send a letter of intent to a Canadian medical school?
No school page we checked publishes a route for one. Queen's says supplemental materials sent directly "will not be considered".
Can I send an update letter to a Canadian medical school?
Not as an application addendum at Queen's. For a change of contact details, use OMSAS. For new information after a refusal, Western allows a decision review "based on new and significant information".
Will contacting the school hurt my application?
At Queen's and Ottawa, contact with the deans their pages name is treated as a professionalism issue. Elsewhere the pages do not say.
Review the writing you send next
Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent if you also hold US interviews, against GradPilot's letter of intent and interest rubric for US MD and DO schools; it checks that the letter ties a named feature of the school to your own reason for attending and states your interest at its true strength. If the season ends without an offer, the Canadian medical school waitlist and offers page sets out the reapplication plan. More guides are on the medical school essays hub.
