Uppsala Statement of Purpose: 400 or 600 Words?

Uppsala's statement of purpose is c. 400 words, but sheets set the cap: 400 for Computer Science, 600 for Peace and Conflict, none for Political Science.

Uppsala Statement of Purpose: 400 or 600 Words?

Uppsala University says a statement of purpose (also called a letter of intent or motivation letter) is "usually one page (c. 400 words)". But about 60 programmes use an application summary sheet, and the sheet sets the real limit: 400 words for Computer Science and Psychology, 600 words for Peace and Conflict Studies, and no statement field at all for Political Science and Global Health.

So the 400-word figure is a starting point, not the rule. Our view: open your programme's sheet before you write a word. Where a programme selects on the quality of your bachelor's thesis, your statement should point the reader at the thesis, not compete with it. When the draft is ready, choose the one-page European motivation letter rubric for a free review.

Every Uppsala and University Admissions page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. The summary-sheet PDFs print no year. We read the versions linked from each programme's Autumn 2027 page that day.

Name, length and the summary sheet

Uppsala's supporting documents page sets three rules for the statement:

"A statement of purpose (also called a letter of intent, motivation letter, or personal letter) is usually one page (c. 400 words) long — see any page limit under the application information on the programme page."

"Some programmes require the statement of purpose to be entered directly in the application summary sheet. If your programme does not use a summary sheet, submit it as a separate document."

"If no template is provided, prepare the document yourself, following any instructions such as page limits."

It says the statement "generally" asks why you are applying, your expectations of the programme, relevant experience, and what you hope to achieve as a graduate. The sheet itself "may include fields for your statement of purpose, work experience, research experience, a summary of your Bachelor's thesis, or a combination of these."

The list of programmes that require a summary sheet had 60 entries on 31 October 2026 (our count, with the seven chemistry tracks counted separately). It includes Computer Science, Data Science, Global Health, Peace and Conflict Studies, Psychology and Sustainable Development.

Five programmes, five different sheets

We opened five sheets linked from Autumn 2027 programme pages. The selection wording is from each programme page; the fields are from its sheet.

ProgrammeSelection, verbatimStatement field in the sheetOther capped fields
Computer Science"overall appraisal of previous university studies and a statement of purpose"Max 400 words: other merits, such as "being a teaching assistant"; "what are the key subjects you want to study, and why"Project or thesis summary, max 400 words; required-credit tables
Psychology"overall appraisal of previous university studies and a statement of purpose"Max 400 words: "what key subjects you want to study, and why"; "how your previous studies and experiences have prepared you"Thesis or project summary, max 400 words; required-credit tables
Peace and Conflict Studies"with emphasis on the quality of the Bachelor's thesis (or equivalent academic essays) and a statement of purpose"Max 600 words: why you apply and how you would benefit; how you would contribute; how studies and experience shaped your interestThesis summary, max 400 words; research methods, max 400 words
Political Science"with emphasis on the quality of the Bachelor's thesis (or equivalent project work)"NoneThesis summary, max 400 words
Global Health"previous university studies, professional experience and engagement in global health"NoneEmployment and engagement entries, each with "Description and relevance to the field of global health"

Two programmes ask for the same 400 words but want different things in them. Computer Science wants other merits and the subjects you will study. Psychology wants the subjects and your preparation. A statement written for one does not answer the other.

What Uppsala does not publish: how much the statement weighs against grades or the thesis, or how sheets are scored.

Submit only what the programme lists

Uppsala says "Submit only the documents requested." University Admissions, which runs the national portal, is blunter: "Documents that haven't been requested won't be considered and will delay the processing of your application."

That rule settles the Political Science and Global Health cases. Neither sheet has a statement field, and neither programme page lists a statement among its programme-specific documents. Our view: do not upload a separate statement there. Put the effort into the fields that exist. Global Health's sheet even says "Please do not submit any recommendation or appraisal letters."

The countercase: some programmes not on the summary-sheet list do ask for a separate statement with a page limit. Uppsala says to "see any page limit under the application information on the programme page". There, the c. 400-word norm is your guide.

Two mechanics. Uppsala says "If you apply to multiple programmes, clearly indicate in each document which programme it belongs to in the file name." And every letter you upload can be read across Swedish universities, as the Chalmers motivation letter guide explains, so do not reuse one statement for Uppsala and Chalmers.

When the thesis outweighs the statement

Peace and Conflict Studies selects "with emphasis on the quality of the Bachelor's thesis". Its programme-specific documents are "an application summary sheet" and "your Bachelor's thesis (or another independent academic essay)". Its sheet asks you to "reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of your thesis or academic essay" in up to 400 words and adds "You must be the sole author of the work."

Uppsala's general page defines the thesis as "an independently written academic work of at least 8,000 words, unless otherwise specified".

So the reader of a Peace and Conflict statement has your thesis open beside it. Our recommendation: let the thesis summary carry the method and findings. Use the statement to say what the thesis left unanswered and how the programme lets you pursue it. Do not summarise the thesis twice.

Writing a statement that points at your thesis

A paragraph plan for the Peace and Conflict statement, built on its three bullets and its 600-word cap:

Sheet bulletParagraphBudget (our suggestion)
"how your previous studies and professional experiences have shaped your interest"The question your thesis raised but could not answer200 words
"why you are applying to the programme, and how you would benefit from it"The courses and methods that answer that question200 words
"how you would contribute to the programme"What you bring: a method, a language, field or work experience150 words

That is 550 words, under the cap. For Computer Science or Psychology, cut to two paragraphs and stay under 400.

Constructed example: the thesis-pointing paragraph

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement.

Context (invented): Adaeze Okafor wrote a bachelor's thesis in political science on ceasefire monitoring in an invented region, using interviews with local officials.

Weak version:

My thesis was about ceasefire monitoring. I used qualitative interviews with officials and found that local trust was important. I learned a lot about research, and this experience made me passionate about peace and conflict studies.

Revised version:

My thesis found that ceasefire violations were reported less often in districts where monitors were local, but my twelve interviews could not tell me why. I could not separate trust from fear, because I had no data on who chose not to report. That gap is why I am applying: I want to learn the survey and comparative methods that would let me test the question across many districts, not just describe it in a few.

The revised paragraph is 76 words (our count). It does not repeat the method, which belongs in the thesis summary field. It names a limit of the thesis and turns it into the reason for applying. Everything in it is invented.

Dates for Autumn 2027

Uppsala uses the national first admissions round on University Admissions.

WhatDateWeekday (our arithmetic)
Application round opens16 October 2026Friday
Application deadline and last day to rank choices15 January 2027Friday
Supporting documents and application fee1 February 2027Monday
Results for master's applicants1 April 2027Thursday

One trap: the Peace and Conflict page still shows an Autumn 2026 block with "15 January 2026" above the Autumn 2027 block. Read the Autumn 2027 block, which says "15 January 2027". For how to order your Swedish choices, see ranking your Swedish choices.

Questions about the Uppsala statement of purpose

How many words is the Uppsala statement of purpose?

"Usually one page (c. 400 words)" unless your programme sets a limit. Summary sheets do: 400 words for Computer Science and Psychology, 600 for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Is the Uppsala letter of intent the same document?

Yes. Uppsala says the statement of purpose is "also called a letter of intent, motivation letter, or personal letter".

Do I upload the summary sheet or type into the portal?

The sheet is a PDF you download from the programme page, complete and submit with your documents. Uppsala says: "Download and complete the PDF form if your programme requires it."

Does Lund work the same way?

Not necessarily. Lund publishes its own statement requirements per programme; see what Lund's statement of purpose asks. For KTH and the wider region, see the Nordic master's motivation letter guide.
