Motivation Letter: Data Science Masters in Germany
Data science master's motivation letter in Germany: 3 of 5 set credit floors; FU Berlin's selection has no letter, TU Dortmund wants a 10-page report.
Motivation Letter: Data Science Masters in Germany
At three of the five German data science master's programmes we checked, a published credit floor in mathematics, computer science and statistics decides eligibility first. FU Berlin's selection rules award 100 points with no letter in them. TU Dortmund replaces the letter with a statistical report of exactly 10 pages. TUM's Data Engineering and Analytics asks for a statement of reasons of at most 2 pages plus an essay of about 1,000 words.
So "how do I write a data science motivation letter for Germany" has three different answers, depending on the programme. Where a statement is read, a statement that does not map your coursework to the floor is decoration. This page shows the floors, the documents each programme scores, and a constructed paragraph that maps a transcript to them. The German motivation letter rubric reads drafts for that kind of mapping.
Every programme page and regulation quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. Floors and tasks change; TU Dortmund sets its report task by semester, and the current one is for summer 2027.

The credit floors, programme by programme
| Programme | Credit floor (as published) | What else is scored | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| FU Berlin, M.Sc. Data Science | CS degree of 180 ECTS, or at least 20 ECTS maths and 10 ECTS CS | Grade (60 points), theory and interdisciplinary credits (20), research work (20) | Admission regulations (English translation) |
| TU Dortmund, M.Sc. Data Science | 44 CP in maths, CS and statistics: at least 8 CS, 16 maths, 8 statistics | A 10-page statistical report | Admission page |
| Saarland University, M.Sc. Data Science and AI | Expertise in maths, theoretical and practical informatics, ML/AI; CGPA 75% and top 10% | Personal statement and two recommendations | Programme page, application guide |
| TUM, M.Sc. Data Engineering and Analytics | No floor on the page; your curriculum file is checked | Statement of reasons (max. 2 pages), essay (about 1,000 words), GRE or GATE for some countries | Programme page |
| Hertie School, Master of Data Science and AI for Public Policy | Maths, statistics and programming, weighted 30% | Letter of 500–900 words; personal suitability and motivation 30% | Admissions |
The detail behind each floor:
- FU Berlin. For a non-CS degree, "at least 5 credit points/ECTS credits must be in the areas of linear algebra or analysis and at least 5 credit points/ECTS credits must be in the areas of either probability theory or statistics", and in CS "at least 5 credit points/ECTS credits must be in an area related to algorithms and at least 5 credit points/ECTS credits must be in a module that provided training in an advanced programming language (e.g., C/C++, Java, or Python)." The translation says "only the German version of this document is legally binding".
- TU Dortmund. The CS credits must come from "algorithms", "data structures", "object-oriented programming" and "software engineering"; the maths from "analysis", "linear algebra", "differential equations", "discrete mathematics" and "numerics"; the statistics from introductory statistics, probability and inference. "If any of these four criteria are not met, admission cannot be granted. No exceptions are permitted."
- Saarland. Mathematics "(discrete mathematics, real analysis and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, numerical methods, stochastics, statistics)", theoretical informatics "(complexity theory, computability)", practical informatics "(functional and object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, databases)", and "Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining".
Statement, essay or project report
FU Berlin: no letter in the score. The selection awards "a maximum of 60 selection points" for the grade, up to 20 for coursework of at least 15 ECTS each in theoretical computer science (10 points) and in interdisciplinary data science (10 points), and up to 20 for "at least 450 hours of relevant, research-based activities in the field of data science". Our arithmetic: 60 + 20 + 20 = 100, the stated maximum. No part of it scores a letter.
TU Dortmund: a report instead of a letter. The current task (for summer semester 2027) asks you "to write a report of exactly 10 pages presenting the results of your analysis", in English or German, and says: "Only applicants whose reports are evaluated by us as at least sufficient can be considered in the further application process." It suggests planning "a working time of approximately 10–20 hours". Graduates of Dortmund's own B.Sc. Data Science are exempt. The self-disclosure form you sign includes: "I confirm that I did write the report independently and without unauthorized aids."
Saarland: a statement read with two recommendations. The page asks for a "Personal statement written by the applicant and two letters of recommendation written by referees who know the applicant academically", as evidence of "the applicant's particular interest in the subject". The recommendations are review forms in the portal, with an optional extra letter.
TUM DEA: two written documents. The statement of reasons "should not be longer than two DIN-A4 pages and must be written in English". It should "explain your specific qualification and exceptional commitment for this particular Master's program" and "make clear the connection between your specific qualifications and the contents of the program." The essay is a separate scientific text on a set topic: see choosing your TUM Informatics essay topic. Applicants with a degree from Bangladesh, China, India, Iran or Pakistan also need a GRE or a GATE score: see TUM's GRE/GATE rule for Indian degrees. The winter application period is 1 February to 31 May, with 1 February to 31 March recommended for applicants who need a visa.
Hertie: a letter that counts, but not most. The letter "should be 500-900 words", and motivation shares a 30% criterion with personal suitability, beside 40% for academic excellence and 30% for quantitative and technical ability. The Hertie School motivation letter guide quotes those criteria and works through that letter.
Our view: for FU Berlin, put the effort into the module descriptions that prove the floor and the extra-point credits; for TU Dortmund, into the report; and for Saarland, TUM and Hertie, write a statement that maps courses to the floor before it says anything about passion for AI.
The countercase: at Hertie, the motivation criterion reads your CV and experience, so a career-changer from policy or consulting can carry the letter on work evidence more than on course names. Their statement should still show the "Training in mathematics and statistics in addition to programming experience" that the 30% quantitative criterion names.
Writing the statement for a data science reader
Three moves, in this order:
- Map the floor. Name your linear algebra, analysis or calculus, probability or statistics, algorithms and programming modules with their credits. Use the programme's own category names.
- Name one piece of work with data and a method. What data, what you did, what came out. An IT-services role counts if you name the data task, not just the employer.
- Name the gap. If you lack a category (theoretical CS for FU Berlin's extra points, functional programming for Saarland), say what you have done about it.
Constructed example: a floor-mapping paragraph
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): a B.Tech Computer Science graduate with two years in an IT services company, applying to Saarland's Data Science and AI.
Weak version:
Data is the new oil, and artificial intelligence is changing every industry. I have always been passionate about machine learning, and Saarland University's excellent programme is the perfect place for me to pursue my dream.
Revised version:
My degree covers most of the programme's practical informatics area: object-oriented programming in Java, data structures and algorithms, and a databases module with a SQL project; I have not taken functional programming. In mathematics I took linear algebra, two calculus modules, discrete mathematics, and probability and statistics; I have not taken a separate numerical methods course. My elective in machine learning ended in a project that predicted late deliveries from a public logistics dataset, where a gradient-boosted model beat my logistic baseline only after I removed a leaking timestamp feature. For two years at an IT services company I have built the reporting pipelines that feed a retail client's demand forecasts. I want the theoretical informatics and statistics the programme adds, because my work stops at the point where I can run a model but not prove why it should generalise.
The revision names Saarland's own areas, gives one checkable project with a method and a result, and names the two missing courses (functional programming and numerical methods) instead of claiming full coverage. The weak version could be sent to any programme and maps nothing.
AI-labelled programmes and authorship rules
AI-labelled programmes keep the same floors and add an ML expectation. Saarland lists "Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining" as a required area of expertise. So an "AI" master's does not lower the maths bar; it adds to it.
The authorship rules are stated plainly, and they differ by document:
- TUM DEA, on its programme page: "The statement of reasons must be your own work and you have to write it without any assistance. We reserve the right to check the essay for authorship of the applicant and the use of unauthorized tools."
- TU Dortmund: the report declaration quoted above, "independently and without unauthorized aids".
- TUM, university-wide, in its style guide:
"The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to create documents for an application at TUM is not permitted. Please refrain from using AI when creating your documents. Self-created application documents are thoroughly checked for the use of AI. Your personal suitability for admission will be checked during the application process. If the use of AI applications for the creation of your application documents is detected, you will be excluded from the application process, i.e. your application will be rejected for deception."
TUM's AI rule for application documents sets that rule beside TUM's plagiarism rule.
Read the declaration you sign for each programme; it is the rule that applies to you.
Checklist before you apply
- Have you counted your credits in each category the programme lists, using its own category names?
- For FU Berlin, have you checked the 20 ECTS maths and 10 ECTS CS split, and the extra-point credits?
- For TU Dortmund, have you downloaded the current semester's task, and is your report exactly 10 pages?
- For TUM DEA, do you have the statement of reasons (English, max. 2 pages), the essay, and a GRE or GATE score if your degree requires one?
- Does your statement map courses to the floor before it discusses interest in AI?
- Does it name one data project with a method and a result?
- Does it name the category you lack?
Questions about data science master's letters in Germany
Does FU Berlin require a motivation letter for data science?
Its selection rules score grade, specific credits and research hours, up to 100 points, and none of the criteria is a letter.
What is the TU Dortmund data science report?
A data analysis task published each semester. You write a report of exactly 10 pages, and only reports rated at least sufficient go further.
How long is the TUM Data Engineering and Analytics statement?
At most two DIN-A4 pages, in English, plus a separate essay of about 1,000 words on a set topic.
Is the AI master's letter different from a data science letter?
The floors are the same; AI programmes add a machine learning area. The letter should map both. Some data programmes rank on the converted grade; see grade cut-offs that the letter cannot change.
Before you draft, read AI in a motivation letter: European university rules; TUM's ban and MARIHE's declaration differ.
