German MSCS: Can an SOP Fix Missing Credits?
A strong SOP cannot replace coursework that a German MSCS program makes an admission requirement. First establish whether the required learning is present in your academic record. Then use the motivation letter to explain your preparation and fit.
What the university is checking
TUM Informatics requires a Computer Science or Informatics bachelor's degree equivalent to its own. Applicants submit a curriculum analysis and module descriptions alongside their statement of reasons. TUM specifically excludes unfinished courses from that analysis. The statement and the academic-equivalence check are separate parts of the application.
Freie Universität Berlin's Computer Science master's likewise requires a CS degree or an equivalent degree covering its computer-studies component. These are particular programs' rules, not a national formula for converting Indian credits into ECTS.
Our recommendation: do the curriculum comparison before paying for another application or rewriting your letter. More polished motivation does not establish that you studied a subject your transcript and syllabus cannot support.
Separate three kinds of gap
Build a small evidence ledger for each target program. Use its current admission requirements and your university's actual module descriptions.

Do not treat a course name as the whole syllabus. Equally, do not stretch one introductory lecture into evidence that you completed an entire required subject. Let the admissions process determine equivalence; your job is to submit accurate evidence.
Illustrative case, created for this guide: An Indian IT graduate has a module called Foundations of Computing. Its official syllabus includes finite automata, formal languages and assessed exercises. A course-title mismatch might therefore be a documentation problem. Another applicant has never studied those topics but has two years of software employment. That is a different problem. The second applicant cannot make the same curricular claim by describing professional confidence more persuasively.
Ask a targeted question: “Does this completed module, with the attached syllabus and transcript, meet your stated subject requirement?” A general request to overlook missing credits gives the program much less to evaluate.

What belongs in the statement afterward
Once the academic evidence is established, explain how your preparation connects to the program's work. Avoid using the letter as an appeal to waive a rule. Requirements vary, so keep the German university motivation-letter guide beside your target's current instructions.
Writing-assistance policies also matter. TUM says its statement of reasons “must be your own work and you have to write it without any assistance.” That published restriction remains relevant regardless of how useful outside feedback might seem.
