uni-assist VPD Delays: What You Can Still Do

The deadline belongs to the university, not to uni-assist. uni-assist's own guidance is to apply "at least 8 weeks before the deadline expires" because evaluation "usually" takes four to six weeks, and your documents must be in your My assist account before the university's deadline. A VPD that arrives after it is generally too late for that intake — but it stays valid for a year, so it is not wasted.

The three published numbers

From uni-assist's deadlines and processing time page: the deadline is "often July 15th" for a winter start and "often January 15th" for summer; "You will usually receive your evaluation result in 4 to 6 weeks"; "Apply as early as possible, at least 8 weeks before the deadline expires." From its VPD page: processing "usually takes 4 to 6 weeks after you have submitted your online application form", and the VPD "is valid for one year from its date of issue, no matter which semester you select."

Together those produce a date rather than a feeling. Eight weeks back from 15 July lands in mid-May; from 15 January, in mid-November. Note also that the 4-to-6 weeks runs from the day uni-assist received your online application form, not from the day you paid — which is usually why a four-week wait already feels late.

What you can still do

Work through this in order.

Submit the university application itself on time, if its route allows that. A VPD and an application are different steps; missing one does not automatically mean abandoning the other. Each university publishes its own rule for an incomplete application, and that published rule — not a general expectation — governs your case.

Do not assume an exception exists. uni-assist states that documents must be in My assist before the application deadline, and no published page promises late acceptance. Treat any claim that universities "usually" accept a late VPD as unverified.

Check whether a second target is still reachable. German deadlines are not uniform — many programmes set dates earlier than the 15 July and 15 January headlines, some later. A VPD issued too late for one may land inside another's window.

Keep going on what you control. Your letter, transcripts and translations are not blocked by the VPD queue — and see does uni-assist read your motivation letter. The APS certificate runs on a separate track again; is APS for admission or the visa settles which deadline it belongs to.

A late VPD is not a wasted VPD

The VPD "is valid for one year from its date of issue", and TU Berlin repeats it: "a VPD is valid for one year and you can use it to apply multiple times within this period, but you can only apply for one Master's per semester at TU Berlin." A VPD that misses a January deadline is still live for the following winter round. TU Berlin also removes the excuse for next cycle: "Since the VPD can be requested throughout the year, you can request it even before you start applying."

Are you required to have one at all?

Check before you queue again, because the requirement is set by the university and it changes. TU Berlin states that master's applicants who completed their first degree at a foreign university "will need a preliminary review documentation (VPD) for their application to TU Berlin from the summer semester of 2026 onwards" — a dated rule at one university, not a Germany-wide change. Other universities take applications through uni-assist directly, or assess foreign degrees themselves.
