PhD Application Deadlines and Timeline for Fall 2027
Fall 2027 PhD deadlines at 24 US programs, checked Oct 27: Nov 15 to Dec 16, 2026; 11 close Dec 1. Fee-waiver cut-offs and a month-by-month plan.
PhD Application Deadlines and Timeline for Fall 2027
Most of the 24 PhD programs we checked for Fall 2027 entry close between December 1 and December 15, 2026. We read their official pages on October 27, 2026. Eleven close on December 1. Two close in mid-November: Michigan Psychology on November 15 and every Stanford Graduate School of Education PhD on November 16. The latest in our set, UC San Diego Electrical and Computer Engineering, closes December 16.
The application date is often not the first date that matters. Fee-waiver requests can close weeks earlier, letters are usually due on the same day as your application, and one program offers a cheaper early deadline. Plan backward from the earliest date on your own list, not from the typical one.
Dates change every cycle. Each row below was read on the program's official page on October 27, 2026, and each page named Fall 2027 (or the 2027-28 year) or gave a 2026 date. Where a page didn't, we left the program out rather than guess. For example, MIT's EECS admissions page pairs a December 1, 2026 deadline with "graduate admission in September 2026", and Yale's graduate-school deadline table sits under a "Summer-Fall 2026" heading. We will re-check this page for Fall 2028 around August 2027. Until then, confirm the date on the program page before you rely on any row.
Fall 2027 PhD deadlines we verified
Times and time zones are as each page states them. "Fee" is the application fee for one program. Follow the program link for the source; the fee and waiver pages are listed under Sources.

What the table changes about your plan
One university can run five different deadlines. Stanford's five rows in this table carry five dates, from November 16 (Education) to December 14 (Physics). Berkeley and Northwestern each have programs closing on December 1 and December 15. "When is Stanford's PhD deadline?" has no single answer. Read the department page, and our guide to priority funding dates versus final deadlines for programs that publish both.
The clock matters as much as the date. Carnegie Mellon closes at 3 p.m. Eastern. Harvard's program pages show 5:00 pm without a time zone; Harvard is on Eastern time, so if you are unsure, submit earlier or ask. Berkeley closes at 8:59 pm Pacific. Carnegie Mellon's December 9, 3 p.m. Eastern deadline is noon in California and, in practice, a December 8 deadline for anyone who plans to finish in the evening.
Money dates come first. The earliest real deadline on this list is not an application. It is Stanford Education's last fee-waiver round on November 5. Stanford Earth & Planetary Sciences closes waiver requests on November 23, eleven days before applications. UC San Diego denies requests sent within a week of the deadline. Carnegie Mellon's November 18 early deadline saves $20 per program and nothing else. Our PhD fee-waiver guide covers what to do while a request is pending.
Test requirements split three ways. In this table, Harvard Chemistry, Harvard Economics, Harvard Population Health Sciences (or the MCAT), Stanford Physics, Stanford Statistics, Yale Political Science and Princeton Public Affairs require the GRE General Test. Berkeley EECS, Penn BGS, Stanford Mechanical Engineering, Stanford Earth & Planetary Sciences and Northwestern Sociology do not accept it. The rest make it optional, don't require it, or ask you not to send scores. Decide on testing per program, not per field.
Fees add up. Fees in this table run from $0 (Penn BGS) to $155 plus processing (Berkeley, international applicants). Most fall between $90 and $135. How many PhD programs to apply to works through what a list costs.
Month-by-month timeline for Fall 2027 entry
This is a sequence for an applicant with December deadlines. The dates come from the pages above. The spacing between steps is our recommendation, and each one says why.
| When | What to do | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Late October to early November | Fix your list and note each program's earliest date: waiver request, early deadline or application. | Waiver rounds close as early as Nov 5 (Stanford Education). |
| Same window | Email faculty where the department admits through advisers. Skip it where admission runs through a committee or rotations. | See whether to email a professor before you apply. |
| Four weeks or more before your first deadline | Open each application and register your recommenders, so the system sends their requests. | Stanford Education: "you will be asked to identify your recommenders"; Carnegie Mellon: letters "must be received by the final deadline". |
| By about November 19 | Take the GRE if a program on your list requires it and you have no score. | ETS: official scores are available "8–10 days after your test date". Additional score reports cost "US$40 per score recipient" and take "approximately 5 business days" to process. |
| Mid-November | First deadlines: Michigan Psychology (Nov 15), Stanford Education (Nov 16), Carnegie Mellon's early deadline (Nov 18). | Table above. |
| December 1–16 | The main cluster: 11 of our 24 programs close on December 1 and four on December 15. | Table above. |
| January to February | Some programs interview shortlisted applicants; others decide without interviews. | See PhD admission without an interview. |
| March to early April | Decisions arrive. Princeton Public Affairs lists "Admissions Decisions: March 15, 2027". Michigan Psychology says applicants "will be notified … no later than April 1." | Program pages above. |
| April 15, 2027 | The usual reply date for funded offers at institutions that follow the Council of Graduate Schools resolution. | CGS FAQ, quoted below. |
The November 19 GRE date is arithmetic, not an ETS rule. ETS sends scores to up to four recipients you name on test day when the scores are ready, eight to ten days later, so a test taken by about November 19 should reach a December 1 program in time. If your first required-GRE deadline is earlier, move the test earlier. If your score already exists, order reports at least a week before the deadline.
Recommenders need the most lead time. Our recommendation is to register them at least four weeks before your earliest deadline. Our basis is that several programs above want letters by the application deadline itself. Michigan Psychology wants them by November 15 for "fullest consideration". The countercase: some programs will still review a file with a late letter. Read what to do if a letter is missing at the deadline before you assume either way.
On April 15, the CGS FAQ is narrower than many applicants think: "The April 15 Resolution only applies to offers of full tuition support, a graduate fellowship, traineeship, or assistantship." Not every program follows it. Our guide to whether April 15 applies to your offer covers the exceptions.
If you are starting in November
You can still apply this cycle. You will probably apply to fewer programs than you planned. In order:
- Sort your list by earliest date, counting waiver requests and early deadlines. Drop or defer any program whose earliest date you cannot meet.
- Send waiver requests first. They are the dates most likely to have passed already.
- Register recommenders today in every open application, and tell them the earliest letter date.
- Book the GRE only where a program requires it. Several programs in this table do not accept it.
- Write one strong statement, then tailor. Each program needs a fit paragraph that names people, groups or resources there. If you cannot write that paragraph for a program, that is a reason to cut it.
The countercase to cutting: if a program is your strongest fit and closes on December 15, a rushed but specific application may serve you better than a polished generic one sent elsewhere. Make that call program by program.
Requirements that change what you write
Two rows above add a document rather than a date. Northwestern Philosophy asks for an AI transparency statement: "In evaluating applications, we require transparency in how AI may have been used in the preparation of materials. Please include a document that briefly explains to what extent AI was used in these areas: writing, research, editing, and formatting. If AI was not used at all, please indicate that in your document." Princeton Public Affairs caps its personal statement: it "should not exceed 250 words and must be written in English." Check each program's document list as closely as its date.
Questions about PhD deadlines
When are most PhD applications due for Fall 2027? In our 24-program check, on December 1 or December 15, 2026. A few close in mid-November and a few in the first half of December.
Is the deadline the same for the whole university? No. In this table, Stanford, Berkeley and Northwestern each have programs with different deadlines.
Do letters have a separate deadline? At the programs we read, letters are due by the application deadline, and some say so explicitly. Some programs still review a file whose letter arrives late, so check the program's own rule.
When do PhD decisions come out? The pages we read give March 15, 2027 (Princeton Public Affairs) and "no later than April 1" (Michigan Psychology). Funded offers at institutions that follow the CGS resolution usually have an April 15 reply date.
Can I apply to two PhD programs at one university? Sometimes. Universities set different limits. See applying to two PhD programs at the same university.
What should I send my recommenders? The list, each deadline and the program's upload instructions. If a recommender asks what the letter needs, send the master's and PhD recommendation letter format and sample.
How this page was built
On October 27, 2026 we read each program's official admissions page and, for fees and waivers, its graduate school's page. A program was included only if the page named Fall 2027 (or the 2027-28 year) or gave a 2026 date. Pages we could not load were left out, including Princeton's and Columbia's graduate school deadline tables, which refused automated access. The 24 programs are large research universities across fields. They are a sample, not a census, and are weighted toward private universities and toward Stanford (five rows). They show the range of dates. They are not a substitute for your own program pages.
