Illinois Institute of Technology — Illinois Tech, a private tech university in Chicago — reports on its own Quick Facts page that 60% of its graduate students are international, drawn from 117 countries. That's one of the highest international graduate shares of any US university, and it's the kind of number that makes an applicant ask whether they're looking at a degree program or a revenue line. So we ran the MS in Computer Science through our Cash-Cow Index, an 8-test rubric scored entirely on public facts.
"Cash cow" here is an evaluative label for a revenue-oriented structure, drawn from disclosed facts — not an accusation of wrongdoing, fraud, "visa mill," or low quality. Illinois Tech is an accredited, long-established research university and the degree carries real value. Every figure is sourced and dated.

The demand side reads cash-cow-like: a majority-international, full-pay, STEM/OPT-marketed graduate body, a GRE-optional one-to-1.5-year coursework master's, and a sticker that runs to roughly $59K-plus before living costs. But two tests pull it firmly out of the "strong" band. It runs in-house — there's no online-program-manager skimming 40–60% of your tuition (Middleman: 2/12). And it publishes outcomes rather than hiding them, with a 90% survey-collection rate for the Class of 2025 (Outcomes: 4/10) — the disclosure counts in its favor even though it isn't cut to the MS-CS level. The admissions bar also isn't a true open door: graduate CS reportedly admits well under half of applicants, which keeps the Open-door score modest. The high international concentration is the headline here, and it's the school's own reported figure (60%, school-wide) — not a program-specific number, and not evidence of anything beyond who shows up.
Mitigating context
Illinois Tech is an accredited research university with a CS department that's been around for decades — this is not an unranked online vendor, and the MS CS is a genuine technical degree. Because the program is run by the university itself rather than a for-profit partner, more of your tuition stays inside the institution. A 60%-international graduate body reflects an applied-tech school in a major US city that has long recruited globally; Crain's framed that same exposure as a vulnerability, not a business model. And unlike many programs we review, Illinois Tech does publish career outcomes — treat the salary figures as student/OPT-reported rather than independently audited, but the disclosure itself is to its credit. For a STEM applicant who wants a Chicago-based tech brand, the STEM-OPT runway, and an in-house program, this can be a rational choice — provided you price the real bundled tuition and fees and assume little-to-no funding, which our data on assistantship funding for international MS students shows is the norm.
For comparison, a program that scores higher on the same rubric is UIUC Gies's MSBA; a same-vertical sibling that lands nearby is NJIT's MS CS; and the benchmark for a genuinely good deal — far lower on the rubric — is Georgia Tech's OMSCS.
